You lie there in the stillness of your slumber clinging to life; I reach inside to touch you and you stir slightly; I feel a tiny breath like a feather caress my fingers as I love you through the glass. One eye opens easily staring into mine; Can you see me? Can you feel my presence as I love you through the glass. I ache to hold you; I await the moment when you peacefully rest in my loving arms. A silent tear rolls down my face; I slowly turn to walk away only to glance back one more time as I love you through the glass. (c) 1998 Elena Murphy All Rights Reserved regards skipy |

Subject: RE: Songs about glass? From: black walnut Date: 24 Aug 04 - 08:14 AM I don't think anybody has mentioned David Francey's amazing song - 'Broken Glass'. The words and melody fit together perfectly. It is awesome. Here are the lyrics, from David's website: Broken Glass This was written for my daughter, Amy, when she was 14 years old. I remembered what it was like to be a boy in love, and unable to say so. I realized that all the awkwardness and unrequited passion of high school days remain unchanged from generation to generation. Saw you standing in the cafeteria line I'd have given the world just to make you mine Saw you at your locker, in the high school hall And it didn't take a minute for my heart to fall When you hear a sound like broken glass That's my heart every time that girl walks past When you hear a sound like the rush of wind It's just me catching my breath again Saw you on the bus, on the way back home You were sitting so pretty, sitting all alone Couldn't think of anything much to say Except I'll love you forever, 'til my dying day When you hear a sound like broken glass That's my heart every time that girl walks past When you hear a sound like the rush of wind It's just me catching my breath again Seeing her now makes me think of then And I remember how and I remember when You'd go to a party hoping that she'd show Then you'd dance in the darkness to Abbey Road When you hear a sound like broken glass That's my heart every time that girl walks past When you hear a sound like the rush of wind It's just me catching my breath again Under Bunker Road, Ayer's Cliff, Quebec, 1993 Lead Vocals: David Francey Guitar: Dave Clarke Backing Vocals: David Francey |

Subject: RE: Songs about glass? From: GUEST,Lindsay Date: 22 Aug 04 - 06:50 PM my remark about the test tube wasn't meant to be serious, it just seemed a joke at the time, we were just teenagers who didn't understand such things, anyway, but the thought of it made us laugh! It's a rather nice song... |
Subject: RE: Songs about glass? From: greg stephens Date: 22 Aug 04 - 06:33 AM I think test-tubes are generally made of clear glass. I havent the slightest idea what this song is meant to mean(not unusual in songs of that era), but I somehow dont feel its about test-tube babies. Interesting the rhyming of dawn and morn. I think Auden in later life revised some of his earlier poems, and removed various rhymes like that. They only rhyme in certain forms of English:received(posh) pronunciations, and possibly SE English? Anyway, Auden wanted his poems to rhyme even if a west country peasant (like me) was reading them. And in that case, dawn and morn most certainly dont rhyme. |

From: GUEST,Lindsay Date: 22 Aug 04 - 04:43 AM Donovan's "Jersey Thursday" In a tiny piece of coloured glass My love was born And reds and golds and yellows Were the colours in the dawn Night put on its purple cloak Of velvet to the sky And the gulls were wheeling, spinning, On Jersey Thursday. (I first heard this song in the 60s - we considered that the "tiny piece of coloured glass" was a test-tube, although the first "Test Tube Baby" had yet to be born) |

Subject: RE: Songs about glass? From: Noah Zacharin Date: 20 Aug 04 - 04:56 PM I guess I'll throw my two cents in: a song from my first CD ("the green album") is entitled "seasons of glass". not about glass-blowing, but about drinking and change and distortion of vision. if the link is working you can hear it on www.noahsong.com under recordings. |

From: fleabag Date: 20 Aug 04 - 06:37 AM what about Walking On Broken Glass - Annie Lennox or We Are Glass - Gary Numan and Tubeway Army or Glass Onion - The Beatles or of course you could include the traditional rude references to blowing or others like Blow The Man Down Blow Away - george harrison blow your mind - Jamiroquai |
Subject: RE: Songs about glass? From: greg stephens Date: 20 Aug 04 - 05:13 AM The man that looks on glass On it may stay his eye Or if he pleases through it pass And then the heaven espy You are right Sir Roger de Beverley. There are lots of references to things made of glass, and I suppose I could chop them up and make a musical collage(not much rehearsal time though!). I cant help feeling there's a "Glass Blowers Lament from the Gallows" oout there somewhere, lurking in the Roy Palmer "Book of Industrial Worcestershire Ballads" or something like that. But all these suggestions are excellent, and giving me more and more ideas. I am not entirely convinced by "I belong to glass blow" though. |

Subject: RE: Songs about glass? From: Big Al Whittle Date: 19 Aug 04 - 06:25 PM Probably true. and of course theres waterford crystal - which must have an ancient lineage. I'm just thinking of tales my mother told me about glass blowers when I was a kid. They were renowned as highly paid hard drinking men in St Helens. Its almost certain such a class produced some songs. |

Subject: RE: Songs about glass? From: Noreen Date: 19 Aug 04 - 05:18 PM weelittledrummer, they were doing it in Worcestershire before they were doing it in St Helens (though it pains me, a Lancashire lass, to say so). You taking part in the International Festival Of Glass, greg? Sorry I don't know any relevant songs, though I drive through the Glass Quarter in Stourbridge every day on my way to work. Perhaps I should enquire of the local libraries! |
Subject: RE: Songs about glass? From: GUEST,ClaireBear Date: 19 Aug 04 - 04:56 PM Not much on the song front, Some poems, though -- none of them particularly lyrical, alas: This page offers a poem called "the Glassblower's Heart." The Ashmolean Museum has one in hexameter, no older than the Roman period, printed on papyrus, here. And there's one by Rumi called "A New Rule." I prefer the second translation. The glassblower part doesn't come in 'til the end, though. Here's a short-short story called "The Glassblower's Legacy." Or how about a short play? No, I have it: give up on the songs, stories, and plays and just set up a glass harmonica concert! Here's the Web site for Glass Music International. |

Subject: RE: Songs about glass? From: Big Al Whittle Date: 19 Aug 04 - 03:20 PM Why not a press release to The St Helens Reporter. If there are any glass songs , that's where they'll be. Got to be a collection of folksongs of Lancashire somewhere - St Helens library. How aboutPilkingtons themselves - they are a company mighty proud of their history. There are displays of float glass in St Helens. Its a while since I've been - but there used to be a little museum in Victoria park with stuff like that in. Good hunting! |

Subject: Songs about glass? From: greg stephens Date: 19 Aug 04 - 01:57 PM Well, I'm working on a firework event celebrating the glass making industry,. Normally for such things I come up with the appropriate folk(or other) song and include it in the score. Now fishemen, ploughboys, molecatchers, steel makers, gypsies...well almost any social grouping has some suitable songs, but I'm really drawing a blank on this one. If the Worcestershire glaas-makers and blowers have left a legacy of song, I have yet to find it. Anybody got any bright ideas? Songs, poems, anything. |
