I don't think anybody has mentioned David Francey's amazing song -
'Broken Glass'. The words and melody fit together perfectly. It is awesome.

my remark about the test tube wasn't meant to be serious, it just seemed a joke at the time, we were just teenagers who didn't understand such things, anyway, but the thought of it made us laugh! It's a rather nice song...

I think test-tubes are generally made of clear glass. I havent the slightest idea what this song is meant to mean(not unusual in songs of that era), but I somehow dont feel its about test-tube babies. Interesting the rhyming of dawn and morn. I think Auden in later life revised some of his earlier poems, and removed various rhymes like that. They only rhyme in certain forms of English:received(posh) pronunciations, and possibly SE English? Anyway, Auden wanted his poems to rhyme even if a west country peasant (like me) was reading them. And in that case, dawn and morn most certainly dont rhyme.

You are right Sir Roger de Beverley. There are lots of references to things made of glass, and I suppose I could chop them up and make a musical collage(not much rehearsal time though!). I cant help feeling there's a "Glass Blowers Lament from the Gallows" oout there somewhere, lurking in the Roy Palmer "Book of Industrial Worcestershire Ballads" or something like that. But all these suggestions are excellent, and giving me more and more ideas. I am not entirely convinced by "I belong to glass blow" though.

Probably true. and of course theres waterford crystal - which must have an ancient lineage. I'm just thinking of tales my mother told me about glass blowers when I was a kid. They were renowned as highly paid hard drinking men in St Helens. Its almost certain such a class produced some songs.

Not much on the song front, Some poems, though -- none of them particularly lyrical, alas:

This page offers a poem called "the Glassblower's Heart."

The Ashmolean Museum has one in hexameter, no older than the Roman period, printed on papyrus, here.

And there's one by Rumi called "A New Rule." I prefer the second translation. The glassblower part doesn't come in 'til the end, though.

Here's a short-short story called "The Glassblower's Legacy."

Or how about a short play?

Why not a press release to The St Helens Reporter. If there are any glass songs , that's where they'll be. Got to be a collection of folksongs of Lancashire somewhere - St Helens library. How aboutPilkingtons themselves - they are a company mighty proud of their history. There are displays of float glass in St Helens. Its a while since I've been - but there used to be a little museum in Victoria park with stuff like that in.

Well, I'm working on a firework event celebrating the glass making industry,. Normally for such things I come up with the appropriate folk(or other) song and include it in the score. Now fishemen, ploughboys, molecatchers, steel makers, gypsies...well almost any social grouping has some suitable songs, but I'm really drawing a blank on this one. If the Worcestershire glaas-makers and blowers have left a legacy of song, I have yet to find it. Anybody got any bright ideas? Songs, poems, anything.
