Subject: RE: Hull Shanty Thing From: HRH ted of hull Date: 20 Aug 04 - 06:33 AM Bugger! This clashes with Whitby otherwise I would have minced along! Will the last person to leave Hull tomorrow please switch the lights off. |
Subject: RE: Hull Shanty Thing From: The DeanMeister Date: 20 Aug 04 - 11:09 AM Ted, Whitby's bin occurring for a whole week! Actually, it's usually dying by the weekend. Get your arse down to the Marina, and learn a shanty. It's ace fun. |
Subject: RE: Hull Shanty Thing From: HRH ted of hull Date: 20 Aug 04 - 11:15 AM I can't! get youself up to Glaisdale for raggytash's singaround. You bring your strat and I'll take my Gibson 180, we could do a Grateful Ted 3hour jam kinda thing for them. |
Subject: RE: Hull Shanty Thing From: Carol Date: 20 Aug 04 - 11:55 AM Looking forward to finding the Minerva on Sunday - first time I'll have been to this 'do' but hope to bump into my old mates Bitter End over there. |
Subject: RE: Hull Shanty Thing From: John Routledge Date: 22 Aug 04 - 07:03 PM Les and Maggie were indeed in the Minerva doing some great singing. Linda and Hazel - Hissyfit - were also in fine form in The Minerva. What a lovely pub!!! Overall the weekend was hugely enjoyable so roll on first weekend of Sept 2005 for the next one. |
Subject: RE: Hull Shanty Thing From: 8_Pints Date: 22 Aug 04 - 07:23 PM I agree with John R! It was great to meet up with 'J from Hull', 'L from Hull' & Maggie. Managed to meet Linda & Hazel on Saturday but Sue missed them on Sunday (I expect they were convalescing their livers!). Shellbacks have been invited for a return match next year, which should be fun!!! Bob & Sue vG |
Subject: RE: Hull Shanty Thing From: Snuffy Date: 23 Aug 04 - 09:24 AM A great weekend with some wonderful singing. Lovely to catch up with Sir John again at last in the White Hart on Friday night (not seen him since Llanstock II nearly 3 years ago), and Les from Hull and Maggie and Linda Kelly and Pistachio in the Minerva. Shame the rest of Hull was in Whitby, though. See you next time. |
Subject: RE: Hull Shanty Thing From: Selchie - (RH) Date: 23 Aug 04 - 01:07 PM A good weekend, plenty of entertainment & shanties. Nice to meet Les, Maggie & other catters, with good singing in The White Hart & The Minerva. Enjoyed the Shellbacks company. In fact, enjoyed all the performances, especially Stormalong John! M |
Subject: RE: Hull Shanty Thing From: Skipper Jack Date: 23 Aug 04 - 02:50 PM Another "Sea Fever" put to rest and as one expects of Hull C.C. and Shanty Jack, a great success. Full marks to The Minerva! it was a pleasure to MC and sing in there, and on the main stage on Saturday afternoon. I didn't get around to The Green Bricks, except to get a tot of rum between acts on the main stage! Shellbacks carried the "Fringe Event", Saturday night at The White Hart expertly! For me, David & Julie Evardson were excellent, (I had not seen them before). Perhaps it would have been nice to see more shanty groups participating? However, it was a smashing festival. Roll on 2005. Meanwhile I'm off to the Cardiff Harbour Event this weekend. The Baggies are there with Monkey's Orphan, Hearts of Oak and The Endeavor Shantymen joining a number of folk acts. Subject: RE: Hull Shanty Thing From: Roger the Skiffler Date: 24 Aug 04 - 03:49 AM Does the Hull Shanty Thing have songs about Curry Ships eg The Soup jOhn E? RtS (I'll just get me oilskins...) |
Subject: RE: Hull Shanty Thing From: Skipper Jack Date: 24 Aug 04 - 05:44 AM No, it was Sunday afternoon I MC'd on the main stage!! Silly Me! |
Subject: RE: Hull Shanty Thing From: Roger the Skiffler Date: 24 Aug 04 - 08:35 AM (Putting my money where my mouth is...) We ordered the soup jOhn E My grandpappy and me The Curry Ship waiter warned us it was hot It wasn't a joke My mouth started to smoke And flames shot out of my grandpappy's bot ('tom) So order more lager beer The Hullish curry is here I love a Madras Even though it blisters my arse Poppadum Poppadum Bring me more Poppadum Grandpappy only wants to go home to na(a)n. Muse dried up so over to the rest of you. But there is this from an earlier curry ship thread... The good ship Vindaloo Had a a discontented crew. They all jumped ship when it docked in Hull. The captain was in dispair A crew like this so rare Hard workers, hard drinkers And always on the pull. He searched the pubs in Hull For innocents to gull To work the ship for months for but a song It came as quite a shock When they'd hardly left the dock When they revealed the instruments they'd brought along Fiddles and guitars Banjos, bodhrans and jars Squeeze boxes of every sort and hue The captain asked the mate "What is to be our fate, They won't stop playing Whatever shall we do?" The mate said: "I don't know We'll have to let them go, The curry trade isn't worth a damn. At least it could be worse This is the final verse And we haven't had a song from the washboard man" RtS (I'll get me sou'wester...) |
Subject: RE: Hull Shanty Thing From: Linda Kelly Date: 24 Aug 04 - 04:43 PM Roger-this smacks of a man with too much time on his hands! Can't wait for the live performance. We had a lovely Hull festival even though we were confined to quarters on Sunday daytime. really enjoyed ourselves and certainly agree not enough Shantymen although Compost heap are great and really do need to perform more(and possibly change their name!) |
Subject: RE: Hull Shanty Thing From: Roger the Skiffler Date: 25 Aug 04 - 03:41 AM Linda, in my own defence, it was too wet to go for my usual long morning walk! I (De-)composed this in my head on my short walk! You wouldn't want a live performance, believe me! RtS (jumping ship...) |
Subject: RE: Hull Shanty Thing From: Roger the Skiffler Date: 25 Aug 04 - 08:59 AM ...and on today's walk I came up with a second verse for the Soup song : The best in all Hull 9 Don't believe the tales they tell of dead cats Grandad, don't be a wuss It isn't poor puss If jOhn E says it's chicken, that's OK by us. The Hull Mudcat Collective liked this so much they sent a car for me. Well...not so much a car... more a drive-by shooting. Luckily, a washboard is as good as Kevlar. RtS (I'll get me lifejacket...) |
