I thought it was time to explain just why certain of us find the subject of William Shatner so endlessly appealing and amusing, if not inspiring.

It's simple. We're either Canadians...or we're American Mudcatters who have met some of the Canadian Mudcatters and joined in the fun once we caught on.

You see, William Shatner is Canadian. Not only that, he was probably the highest profile Canadian actor in the history of TV and movies from the mid-60's on. He starred in a very unique and in the end HUGELY popular sci-fi show, as I'm sure you all know, and in the big budget movies that followed it. He founded a franchise that lives on today. He was a big name, and he was CANADIAN.

Add this to the fact that he has a very idiosyncratic, decidely unusual approach to acting...one that has inspired imitation by countless comedians...and you're onto something major here.

No other Canadian actor has made such an indelible mark on American show business. Jim Carrey imitates Shatner. Do you think Shatner would waste his time imitating Jim Carrey? Ha! Does the Pope imitate the local bishop?

That's why we love him. He's the Man.

Believe me, if he had been born an American or a Brit we Canadians would probably hardly even know he existed at this point.

And that's really all there is to it.

Shatner is one of Canada's biggest exports, and we love him for it!

L.H.'s patriotism is to be commended. Has he reflected on the fact, however, that the target of his affections has flown the coop, abandoned the auld sod, and become a Californian? I put it to you. Has he considered that? No real Canadian would ever raise horses and have a swimming pool in the back yard. No matter how much he might want to.

And Star Fleet Command would still like to speak to ex-Captain Kirk about the many times he deserted his vessel during times of peril. The officer I spoke to muttered something about "a life sentence in the boron mines". Or maybe it was 'moron mimes'.

Well, all these entertainment types do that, it seems. Buffy Sainte-Marie is living in Hawaii. Shatner's got a place in Kentucky or somewhere around there. Jim Carrey's in Hollywood. What the heck. I can forgive Bill for that.

mack/misophist, it's all a part of the "taking over (US) America" plan, phase one. (Phase two is why JtS was sent down here by the Canadian authorities. That's the *"fetchin up the womenfolk" part of the plan.)

True, my wise friend. They are 'sports' that rank up there with football--either version for our British friends, particularly Villan. Puts rugby to shame. Nothing like a goosed moose to start your day in the great outdoors of Canada. And ALL of it is the great outdoors, except for Toronto.

It's the Canadian version. Have a few chugs and goose the moose. Run like hell. Rutting season, however, is another thing totally. Goose a moose in rutting season and you have a friend for life. And if that moose catches you, you will find out that size matters more than you thought possible. Actually, the saner amongst us are considering goosing hamsters. More of an issue of comfort rather than style. Anyway, I see I have rambled on. So I will end here.

VOTE HILLARY!

Bullshit! JJ is right. It all started with Lorne Greene. He conceived the plot to take over the American media by slow increments since it was becoming a serious threat to Canadian culture.

His recruits have included William Shatner, of course, but in addition to (young and old) Donald Sutherland, Ivan Reitman, Yvonne DeCarlo, Christopher Plummer, Brian Adams, Kim Cattrall, Dan Ackroyd, Tommy Chong, Joni Mitchell, Genevieve Bujold, Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, k.d. lang, Dave Thomas, Anne Murray, Michael J. The heck with Shatner.   You should brag about Shania.   That is truly Canadas greatest import. (check out the Richard Knetchel song "if Shania was mine".

You have to love Canadians.   They are just so nice.   At Summerfolk this past weekend, a group from Austrailia named Bluehouse said "We didn't know the Canadian national anthem before coming here, and we were hoping to learn it from the Olympics...oh well" And the Canadians still loved them.

On the Jim Rome sports show today he read an e-mail from a Canadian listener who stated they "one" a gold medal. Rome went on for 15 minutes how it couldn't be a typo because it would be a 3 letter typo.   I thought people that stupid were only in the USA.

Little Hawk- are you OK with Leonard Nimoy squeezing Shatner out in those Priceline commercials?   I wouldn't want to see another Canadian unemployed.

Canadians know that the people who represent us in the Olympics are doing their best. We don't expect more than that. Most of the kids pretty much pay for their own training or become members of clubs that help them train.

However, the Games are just that: games. I recall cheering for Mark Spitz in 1972 (?) when he won a slew of medals, even when he was competing against a Canadian. Felt the same watching Nadia Comaneci--that diminuitive gymnast from Romania who blew the world away with her performances. When Canadian athletes do well, we are happy for them, so we think getting a gold in ANYTHING is fantastic. However, just receiving a medal will have a crowd of people greet athletes at the airport. Gold, Silver, Bronze: hey, ya done good. No medal? Hey, ya done good, because you did your best, and no one has the right to ask for more from anyone.

Fellow I went to a summer camp with--for gymnastics and track--competed in the Mexico Olympics. If I remember correctly, he blew his dismount on the rings. Lost the bronze by that much. Hell, broke our hearts. But were we proud of him? Bet yer ass. Sometimes ya win, sometimes ya lose, and sometimes ya play in the rain.

I think in watching the Olympic Games, it's wise to consider that the athletes are trying their best, and even the guys or gals who come in last have accomplished something most people never will. They have gone where few have gone before.

Can you believe that ABC turned it down (MONK)---USA picked it up and ABC now shows it in prime time re-runs. Sadly, this is this season's finale.

The show was created by Andy Breckman whom I have seen perform as a stand-up. Not my cup of tea---but this---really blew me away with the creativity---and also the basic update of Sherlock Holmes with comedy---think about it. Neurotic sleuth, assistant(nurse), bumbling detectives, and strange cases.   Done with such style and humor.

I see Monk more as a Poirot than a Holmes myself. Different kind of neurosis. I also really appreciate the sensitive way they have of portraying people with disabilities (including ones like OCD and Agoraphobia). In fact, I really appreciate the fact that they make a point of putting a very humane spotlight on disabilities in many of their episodes. It would appear that this has also been done with Shatner's character in The Practice.

Well, in any case, we agree---MONK is great. Wonderful ensamble. I just happen to see more Sherlock than Poirot there--a minor quibble.

I did love that Willie Nelson episode with the "blind" lady.

On a personal note---the ending to that just blew me away for personal reasons.

I see a little bit of myself in Monk. I think maybe that's part of the reason I enjoy him so much. Plus I'm a big fan of Tony Shalhoub.

The site I linked to above was speculating about the possibility that Denny Crain might have some form of early dementia, and that was the disability I was refering to in his case.

It appears the Denny Crain character is going to continue on a new series called, "Fleet Street". I guess it's going to be on the same network as "The Practice".

David Kelley has a wicked up'n down career in my book. Ally McBeal had some cute moments and then got (for me) terminally weird with the lawyer who had a remote control for the toilet, and his pet frog. I liked the other lawyer who once fondled the wattle of Janet Reno. He had some excellent quotes like "Here's a good opportunity to do an end run around the Second Amendment!".

The Practise was pretty good but I got tired of Bobby and his problems with the cute prosecutor and the cute attorney in his own firm that he married. The show would turn serious on some things (Scandal in the RC Church) while milking others for shock/humor/lascivious content, such as the nun who claimed she had immaculately conceived.

And there was that wretched movie of his: "Lake Placid" which took 90 minutes out of my life that I want back.

So I view Kelley with suspicion.

I too want to know about Shanter and Howdy Doody.

William Shatner is definitely Canadian. He was born in 1931 in Montreal and attended McGill University, majoring in Commerce, at first. Later, he switched his major to Drama. He left to tread the boards at Stratford for it's first 3 seasons, after which he moved to New York to further his career in a more monetary way. Got a few more theatre roles, a couple of movie parts, but discovered his future lay in TV. He had a series before Star Trek, did several parts in Twilight Zone episodes and other shows on in the late 50s and early 60s. Then he landed the role of Captain Kirk. And he became a household name after that. He found his success with television roles and has return to that well many times with great success (even in commercials). In the process, he has developed. patented and made famous his particular brand of "Overkill Bill" emotive acting. His performance has been imitated and lampooned for many years, but everybody recognizes it now.

Ya gotta give the devil his due. The man is a success and I'll drink to him any damn day of the week... even Sunday mornings. I do actually have a lot of respect for the guy (keep that under your hat, though).

I'd recommend the film "Free Enterprise" for a good sample of his way of handling a humorous but affectionate jab at himself. Like Leslie Neilson turning his hand from drama to comedy without a pause and making it work admirably well, that's another quality I'd term as Canadian (though not uniquely Canadian).

ROTFLMAOITH!!! That's Shatner at his finest. Check this out...

Who's On First - Trek Style

Kirk - Ah... hello Mister Spock.

Spock - Good day, Captain.

Kirk - Are you an avid baseball fan?

Spock - Baseball is a tactical game played on a geometric pattern
of 4 sides with a spherical object. The purpose is to knock
the 's**t out of' the object amidst loud verbalisations of
'Hurrah' and 'Kock 'em on their a**.' Is this correct?

Kirk - Indeed. We are in the process of learning about one of the
baseball teams from old Earth.

Spock - Oh? I am quite versed with old Earth history... perhaps I
may be of assistance.

Kirk - That's the idea.

Spock - Very well... proceed.

Kirk - Alright... Who's on first.

Spock - I am unable to determine who is on first without proper
information concerning the team and year, sir.

Kirk - So?

Spock - Perhaps we could start with who the team is, and I can test
the accuracy.

Kirk - No... Who's on first.

Spock - I do not know.

Kirk - No... he's third base.

Spock - Who is?

Kirk - No... he's first base.

Spock - Who is?

Kirk - Correct.

Spock - Who is correct?

Kirk - Sometimes.

Spock - Who is sometimes?

Kirk - No... Who is first baseman. I'm not familiar with
Sometimes' identity.

Spock - Whose identity?

Kirk - No... him I know... he's first baseman.

Spock - Who is?

Kirk - Right.

Spock - Perhaps we can discuss the identity of the second baseman.

Kirk - What.

Spock - I said the second baseman.

Kirk - What.

Spock - This is highly illogical. You have no apparent auditory
disfunction, sir. Now, as I asked... who is the second
baseman?

Kirk - No... you didn't ask that, and Who is the first baseman.

Spock - I am not familiar with that piece of information, sir.

McCoy - Dammit, Spock! You messed up the whole setup there!

Spock - Forgive me Doctor... I am not a comedian.

McCoy - Obviously.

Spock - That much is certain.

McCoy - Just get back to the skit.

Spock - Very well. Captain... I ask you... politely... who is the
second baseman?

Kirk - No... Who is the first baseman. What is the second baseman.

Spock - That is incorrect, Captain. The second baseman is obviously
a sentient being, and therefore should be referred to as
who, and not what. 'Who is the second baseman,' not 'what is
the second baseman.'

Kirk - Wrong, Spock. Who is the first baseman, and What is the
second baseman.

Spock - That statement is most illogical.

Kirk - Okay... wait a minute. We'll get Scotty... he's Scottish..
he must love baseball. Oh Mister Scott...

Scott - Aye, Cap'n?

Kirk - Who is the first baseman of the team we were talking about.

Scott - Aye, Cap'n. It ain't never been any other way!

Kirk - You see, Spock?

Spock - Yes... Mister Scott seems to know the material well.
Alright, Mister Scott... who is the second baseman?

Scott - Ach! No, Mister Spock! That be What you're talking about!

Spock - I know that be what... er... is what I'm talking about. I
am very intelligent, and rarely lose track of what I am
talking about.

Scott - Ach! Don't bring track inta this! That be a bloomin'
field event!

Spock - What has this got to do with field events?

Scott - Ach! No! What's the second baseman!

Spock - Again, I note that a person should be referred to as 'who'
and not 'what' Mister Scott.

Scott - Only if he's tha first baseman, Mister Spock!

Spock - What you are saying is most illogical.

Scott - Ach! No! What's a real bright fella!

Spock - Who is a 'real bright fella' Mister Scott?

Scott - No! Who... now he's a real dope, sir!

Spock - Who is?

Scott - Right!

Spock - You are relieved, Mister Scott.

Scott - Aye, sir.

Spock - Sir... this is most illogical, and I am no longer interested
in learning who the second baseman is. I am also growing
impatient.

Kirk - No... Who's the first baseman.

Spock - Very well sir. Good day, gentlemen, or whoever you are.

[Spock leaves.]

Kirk - Whoever! I forgot about him! Wait... I don't remember a
Whoever on the team...
