Happy Ploughman

Near a home in a wood
With a horse very good,
A poor young farmer
Smiled as he stood
Looking down at his plough,
In his heart was a glow
When he sang as he ploughed the row.

CHORUS:
"Heigh-ho my little buttercup
We'll dance until the sun comes up."
Thus he sang as he ploughed,
And he smiled as he sang
While the woods and welkin rang.

I've known this thing for as long as I can remember dating back to my earliest summer camps and I've always meant to ask..........What the hell is a "welkin?"

The 'Welkin' is the sky, the clouds, the heavens ........ anything above our heads.

I'm not familiar with this song. If I read Pete Seeger's comments correctly on this page (click) the tune is related to Redwing/Union Maid??? Is that correct?
Sure doesn't sould like it. There's a nice recording of the song here (click). Anybody care to transcribe a MIDI? Do we know more about this song?

THE HAPPY PLOWMAN

Near a home in a wood,
With a horse very good,
A poor young farmer smiled as he stood
Looking down at his plow;
In his heart was a glow,
Then he sang as he plowed the row:

"Heigh-ho, my little buttercup!
We'll dance until the sun comes up!"
Thus he sang as he plowed,
And he smiled as he sang,
While the woods and the welkin rang.

In a house near the wood,
Where the farmer stood,
There lived his helpmate, lovely and good;
As she cooked and she stirred,
She was glad that she heard,
And she echoed every word:

"Heigh-ho, my little buttercup!
We'll dance until the sun comes up!"
Thus she sang as she stirred,
And she smiled as she sang,
While the woods and the welkin rang.

Swedish folk song, translated by Mrs. Albert Magnuson

What are the lyrics if translated literally? I mean, "We'll dance until the sun comes up!"?? Don't get me wrong--I love this song; loved it in grade school and still enjoy singing it. But I would like to know what the Swedish lyrics are, translated literally into English.

in 1969 grade 3 i remember some of this song and what i sing is a bit different to this one. guessing our teacher may have changed it to suit the era   what i remember is "in a field by a wood where a small cottage stood, i heard a farmer singing a tune and it rang in my head so I stopped and I said will you please teach me that tune. hi lo little butter cup, we'll dance until the sun comes up. so we sang and we danced and we danced and we sang and the woods and the meadows rang.
