Fire fire fire raging all about
Here come the firemen to put the fire out
They leap into their coats and boots
And slide down poles in one big scoot
Hook and ladder rubber hose
...
...
There go the firemen who put the fire out.

I can't remember all the lyrics. My 79 yo mother helped remember several lines.

John Daley-

You get first prize for nailing this one down to:

THE LITTLE FIREMAN
from the story by Margaret Wise Brown
published by William H. Scott Inc. New York, NY

Maybe I'll look up the publication date at the used books website.

I recall some record from the 1960s that had "The Fireman's Song" on it. Some of the lyrics were:

Down, down the ladder!
Down, down the ladder!
As the house is burning, burning to the ground!
This is the fireman's song!

I found this on the back of the record album that I loved as a kid. I didn't think I had it anymore, record is full of scratches, it is at least 50 years old with a tag from F A O Schwartz in NY

THE LITTLE FIREMAN
from the story by Margaret Wise Brown
published by William H. Scott Inc. New York, NY

Fire, Fire, Fire, hear the people shout,
Where are the firemen to put the fire out?
They leap into their hats and boots,
And slide down poles with one big scoot
They board their engine, off it goes
With hook and ladder, rubber hose;
They pass us by so very fast
We'Ve hardly time to gaze,
Their big bells clang, Make way for us
To fight the roaring blaze!
Fire, Fire, Fire raging all about
Here come the firemen to put the fire out

Fire, Fire, Fire raging all about
Here come the firemen to put the fire out
The great big ladder, up it goes,
The great big fireman, a great big hose,
Shooting water with a great big roar
Till the great big fire isn't there any more

Fire, Fire, Fire raging all about
Here come the firemen to put the fire out
The small small ladder, up it goes,
The small small fireman, small small hose,
Squirting water on a flaming wall,
But the big big fire didn't mind at all.

Fire, Fire, Fire raging all about
There go the firemen who put the fire out,
They scale thier ladder, squirt their hoses,
Smoke gets in their eyes and noses,
Pour the water on each nook,
And smah through flame with axe and hook;
Then home thy go when the fire is out,
And people shout their praise,
While big bells clang, Make way for us
Who fought the roaring blaze!
No more fire, raging all about,
There go the firemen who put the fire out

In 1960 my mother-in-law gave my kids a small, illustrated booklet that her brother who had died in 1914 had as a child. It had only 3-4 pages with illustrations of a couple of cheery firemen responding to a fire. The words were "Fire, fire, fire. Fire all about. Here come the firemen to put the fire out." Another book of the series had the following also illustrated. "Rainy is the weather. Cloudy is the sky. Don't forget your overshoes to keep your feet dry."

Sounds like someone but at least the former on a record, but clearly wasn't the writer. We made up our own music for the fire one.

My daughter still has these.

I have a new request for a fireman song/rhyme that accompanied a read along book, possibly a Golden Book. This is from the late 1960's.

It's about a boy whose room is "burning", he sings about the fire on the wall, the ceiling is starting to fall and it's getting his bat and ball, then it's on the shelf and getting on 'myself'.

The fireman is called and there's a deep booming voice, "Where's the fire?", says the fireman, then it lauches into a chorus of "Where's the fire, where's the fire, where's the fire, where?"

Has anyone every heard of this? We've been searching all over the internet but haven't come up with anything. Thank you!

I heard the song a few years ago in Canadian radio on new year's eve. The guy on the raadio said that it hadn't been played by the station for 50 years or something. I've also been looking for a record, but couldn't find one. It's sooo cute. I recorded it with a voice recorder, but it has a very bad quality. My boyfriend digitalised it. Write me if you want to have it and I'll try to send it to you.

From: Jim Dixon

Here's another version of the song that GUEST,Jaqued posted above. Sorry, I don't have time today to proofread it as carefully as I normally would, so there might be some "scannos" here. [Scanno=equivalent of a typo; error introduced by an optical scanner.]

From Allan's Illustrated Edition of Tyneside Songs and Readings, Newcastle-upon-Tyne: Thomas & George Allan, 1891, page 422ff.

THE FIRE ON THE KEE. [sic]

The Explosion of October 6th, 1854, which took its rise from a fire in Gateshead, was perhaps the greatest calamity that ever happened in the North of England.

TUNE—"Wor Jocker."

OH! hae ye seen wor Jimmy, oh! hae ye seen wor Jimmy?
Oh! hae ye seen wor Jimmy? for the lad's gyen on the spree,
He's pawn'd his coat an' troosers, he gans on as he chooses,
He can wallop a' the bruisers an' greet bullies on the Kee.

CHORUS. Oh! hae ye seen wor Jimmy, oh! hae ye seen wor Jimmy?
Tell me, maw canny hinny, for the lad's gyen on the spree.

His nose is neat an' canny, he's a model of a mannie,
An' the pictor o' wor Fanny, oh, the nasty drukken sow.
Aw'll yark his byens wi' skelpin, aw'll set the yelp a yelpin,
Presarve us! there's ne helpin byestin laddies now. CHORUS

He hes a bull-dog wiv him, folks dorsent say owt tiv him,
A good heart beats within him, for he knocks the pollis doon;
He hes twe nice black eyes, tee, an' a mouth for eatin pies, tee;
Folks say he's not ower wise, tee, an' call the lad a cloon.

Spoken.—Aw wish aw could lay hands on him; he went to seek wark this morning—Wark! he's been seekin wark this fourteen years an' niver gettin a job yet—But that fire on the Kee ruined the lad's mind; a gyeble end iv a hoose fell on his head—He's been crack'd iver since. Marcy, what a cutty fosty, but aw'll gie ye an account on't efter the style ov the "Deeth ov Nelson."

TUNE—"'Twas in Trafalgar's Bay."

It was a fearful crash, old buildings they went smash,
'Twas never so before;
The haunts of "auld lang syne" burnt doon on Coaly Tyne,
Laying waste the desolate shore:
For oh! it was a fearful sight, and many a home was lost that night,
For death's grim visitation brought ruin and devastation,
And as from 'mid the flames they hie,
Mercy! save us! hundreds cry—
O! Firemen, do your duty!
O! Firemen, do your duty!

TUNE—"Descriptive Chant."

Hurrying to and fro countless thousands might be seen,
Emerging after hairbreadth 'scapes from ruins where danger just had been;
The soldiers in solemn silence guard the dangerous way,
And firemen willing point the hose to where gaiety dwelt but yesterday.
The populace rushed forth half-dressed in day or night attire,
Like maniacs with maddened brain, from death's devouring fire.

CHORUS. For oh! the flames, Vesuvius-like, they spread o'er land and sea,
Laying desolate waste the spot where once had been Newcastle Kee.

Now many serio-comic scenes were enacted where poor people did dwell,
For goods and chattels from mysterious cribs came tumbling down pellmell.
Aw saw one poor deevil, mevies just gettin oot o' bed,
Hop varry quick to one side iz a wash-han' basin, a kyel pot, and a yetlin' fell a-top iv his head.
'Twas fearful to see the poor aud wives in narrow chares and lanes
Picking up their bits o' things, exposing life, aw's sure they spared ne pains. CHORUS.

Aw say, Pally! thraw the bed oot the window, niver mind the stocks,
Seize Ned's Sunday britches aw bowt last week, but niver mind the box.
Marcy! the floor's geen way,—noo whe wid iver think
That decent folks gan te bed 'boot ten o'clock shud be see close upon deeth's brink?
Search for Tommy's fustin claes, aw cannot see for smoke,
Luik sharp, ye platter-fyeced bunter, or else, begum, aw'll choke. CHORUS.

Search for the bairn's cradle, it's a claes-basket, niver mind, shove it to the door.
Let the auld clock stand agyen the wall, it's time it went 'cas it waddent gan before;
A German for a shillin a week clagged it up agyen the wall,
He's got nowt yit, so faith his tick aw think'll suin be tickin small.
They say Ralphy L—tle's broke his legs, but that myeks little matter,
Cawse a glass o' brandy'll put him reet, wiv a bottle o' soda watter. CHORUS.

Pally, hinny, rush i' the crood an' shoot, for see the smoke an low gets dense,
And luik for Jimmy, maw canny hinny, for the laddie hez ne sense;
But there's a crood o' men there—Mister, can aw claim yor attention?
Aw've lost maw darlin son, an' what he's like aw'll mention—
He's nee scholar, bless the laddie! but he smokes an' chows,
He's parshall ti military movements, espeshley Sangate rows;
He's gat his millishor claes on, thou'll ken him iv a crack,
Besides sum stripes for good behavor, but they put them on his back.
His appearance commands respect—hae ye seen him gannin by?
The skin's off his knockles wi' fightin', an he sports a lairge black eye! CHORUS.

CORVAN. Author's Manuscript, 1862.

Whenever you see a train go by,
or hear an engine whistle cry,
remember the man on the old footplate,
shovelling coal; the drivers mate.
Ch.
A loco fireman is my grade,
boiling water is my trade.
The driver thinks he runs the show,
but if I'm not there, the train don't go!

I remember an entirely different song, same vintage, early 1950s, that Tom Glazer sang on a children's record. I remember only a few lines...

Firefighter, hurry, hurry,
Firefighter, scurry, scurry...

Fire, fire, smoky, smoky.
Get the hose out, don't be poky.
Splash water, sssh, sssh!
Ring bells, ding-ding-dong!
The fire won't wait if we wait too long.
...
Does this ring a bell (so to speak) with anyone?

My recollection is fragmentary, but the slant is different.

My uncle must have been the one to quote the lyric in an adult conversation with my mother back in the '40's or early '50's. I later asked my mother what the rest of the lyric was, and she refused to tell me. That made it stick in my mind.

Phil was a tool maker in San Francisco, and married only later in his life. His primary recreation was nightclubs and bars. He developed a wide acquaintanceship with the owners, bartenders, and entertainers. After a road trip in 1952, he took me out one night to four or five places, and I got to meet many of them. We had a great dinner at Grison's on VanNess, saw some shows in small places on Broadway, and even went backstage to talk to some of his friends. . . . and there's the connection. Both of the shows I remember featured parodies of well known songs. i was especially struck by showgirls singing naughty versions of children's rhymes. . . and we visited them in their dressing-room!

That fireman's song is ripe for parodying. Has anyone got some old "party records"?

Somewhat off topic:

Well, one example of a mailman "song"-found on the Internet and off of the Internet-are these children's rhymes:

"In all of Britain the young have sent our Valentines {Valentine cards are definitely in fashion again}, and trey have written anonymous verses, In Aberdeen and elsewhere in Scotland the boy follow the old convention of putting verse on the envelopes, addressed to the post man.
Postman, Postman, do your duty
Take this to my loving beauty.

Postie, Postie, don't delay,
Do the rhumba all the way" {Opie, Lore & Language, p. 236}

**

Here's some American versions of that rhyme:

mail man mail man
do ur duty hear comes a lady with an African booty
she can do the pom pom she can do the splits but best of all she can kiss kiss kiss with her read hott lips
-socalgal89 at June 16, 2005 http://blog.oftheoctopuses.com/000518.php

-snip-

Here's basically the same version from a Mudcat thread:

Subject: RE: Children's Street Songs
From: GUEST
Date: 02 Dec 04 - 10:20 PM

mailman mailman
do your duty
here comes a lady with an
african booty
she can do the pom pom
she can do the twist
most of all she likes to kiss

-snip-

However, the version of this rhyme that I remember {from Atlantic City, New Jersey, 1950s} was:
Policeman, Policeman,
Do your duty.
Here comes Francine,*
an American beauty.
She can wiggle.
She can wobble
She can do the flip [later the word 'twist' replaced the word 'flip']
But I betcha five dollars she can't do this:

Lady on one foot, one foot, one foot,
turn all around.

Lady on two foot, two foot, two foot

Touch the ground.

Lady of three foot, three foot, three foot {2 feet and one hands on ground}
Say your prayers.

Lady on four foot, four foot, four foot two feet and both hands on ground}
Go to bed. jump out of the rope right after saying this

-my childhood recollection, (Atlantic City, New Jersey, mid 1950s, 1960s}

*substitute the name or nickname of the person jumping solo in between a long rope turned by one "ender" at each end of the rope

-snip-

Here's my daughter's version {Pittsburgh, Penn; 1980s} is almost like this. But she remembers saying "Policelady, Policelady" and the "African booty" phrase.

Fwiw, and "African booty" means "a big butt".

Btw, I've collected some versions from the Internet which still say "American beauty" and not "African booty".

However, I've not collected any of these rhymes that say "Fireman, Fireman do you duty".

As a matter of fact, I haven't collected any children's rhymes about firefighters.

I wonder if there are any...

Love that one, Charley!
When I saw this thread I thought it may be about 'The Fireman's no for me', but that is a different kind of fireman (one who works on a steam train)

Oh the sailor comes home when his voyagings done,
And the soldier gets tired of following the drum,
And the collier will sit by his ain fireside,
But the fireman's one love is the engine he rides.

Mrrzy-

The way I remember it is like this:

She's the only girl I loved
Her face like a hoooooooooorrrrrrrrrrrr-se and buggy
Standin' up against the wall,
Oh, fireman, save my child!
But the child was bigger than the fireman!

The entire song was called "No More Booze."

Here's a verse I composed for "When Jones's Ale Was New" when we were doing a benefit concert for firefighters:

The next came in was a firefighter,
And there was no one brighter,
Yes, there was no one brighter,
For to join in the jovial crew;
And he hauled out his nozzle with all his might,
And it was a totally awesome sight,
And the landlady's daughter squealed in delight!
When Jones' Ale was new, me boys!
When Jones' Ale was new!

I received mine this week, a cd copy of the original, with the full color copy of the album cover. It contains the spoken part and all the lyrics mentioned above! Hope this helps.

OK, the one I remember is as described by amcgarvey@hotmail.com, with the little fireman and his little truck, little dog, etc. and the big fireman with the big truck, etc. In the end the little fireman dreams "Great Big Dreams" and the big fireman dreams little dreams.

Perhas the lyrics reported by "guest" with the 'smoke gets in their eyes and noses' was the sung part, and the big/little fireman was a spoken narrative on top of this? I, too, would love to get hold of the old record.

I have found all of the lyrics to "the little fireman"
I even have a 78 record
there are 3 verses
one is

fire fire fire raging all about
there go the fireman to put the fire out
they scale their ladder, squirt their hoses
smoke gets in their eyes and noses
pour the water in each nook
and smash through flame with axe and hook
then home they go when the fire is out
and people sing their praise
and big bells clang "make way for us
who fought the roaring blaze!"
no more fire, raging all about
there go the fireman who put the fire out

Thanks.

I sing the first few lines of this song to my 2 year old grandson who loves his firehat!!
Can't remember any more of it either, except the da da da part.    I think it was recorded by Burl Ives, but can't find any "proof".
I seem to remember about 2 lines of many many childhood songs, such as The Little White Duck, which I recently sang to him (and floored his mother!) which I DID find available in an album on Amazon, along with others of Burl Ives' recordings.

I too remember this song - in fact my brothers and I were talking about it yesterday and I did the search and found this thread. My brother seems to think that the body of the song was a cautionary song about a "boy who cried wolf" calling out fire! when there was none.

But for sure the lyrics were Fire Fire Fire raging all about, here come the firemen to put the fire out.
("raging all around" won't rhyme even if you are Bob Dylan)

is to do presentations for pre-school and elementary classes
of the "friendly fire fighter" where I show them up close what
our protective clothing, and breathing apparatus is like.

i use puppets, but have not seen thses songs and rhymes..
i will pass them along to the fire dept. for adding to
the training for such presentations~!

I was looking for the words myself this morning, and found your post! I have the next couplet, but I'm missing the third one. Maybe this will help you remember:

[sound of sirens]

Fire fire fire, raging all about,
Here come the firemen to put the fire out!

Smoke gets in their eyes and noses,
Put it out with the great big hoses,

[Da-da da da-da da da
Da-da da da-da da da]

No more fire, raging all about,
There go the firemen who put the fire out.

[sirens]

What's funny is that I was practically obsessed with this song when I was four ... but the sirens terrified me! So I'd put the record on, and as soon as the sirens started I'd go racing off to my mother for safety. I'd come back to hear the song, and every time the siren sound came up I'd run back to Mommy. It meant a lot of running back and forth between the living room and the kitchen, and she never understood why I kept playing it over and over if I was so scared of it! But for some bizarre reason I loved the song ... so I had to put up with the sirens.

I think the reason I can't remember the third verse is because that's when the sirens started to come up again and I was out of the room! (I didn't remember the last verse either, but someone posted it earlier in this thread so I included it here.)

Now if I can just come up with the missing lines...!

Well as to my last question about the source of the "Policeman do your duty" jump rope rhyme being the song quoted by GUEST,Jacqued in the 18 Oct 05 - 04:05 PM post, it certainly isn't the source of that line if that song/poem was written on 03/09/02 and not on
6 Oct 1854 as I first thought.

That's what I get for reading in a hurry}.

Sorry for my mistake.

I'm not familiar with the particular song that you're seeking, but here's a link to contemporary Preschool Fire Safety Songs

Here's one example from that site:

Fire Safety Song added 9-28-98 Original Author unknown
Sung to: "Popeye the Sailor Man"

Use a dog puppet to sing:
I'm Fire Safety Sam. (ruff, ruff)
I'm Fire Safety Sam. (ruff, ruff)

Please test smoke detectors
'Cause they're home protectors.

I'm Fire Safety Sam. (ruff, ruff)

Substitute lines 3 and 4 with the following words for new verses...

It's important to say..
With matches, don't play.

If there's smoke you should know,
you'd better crawl low.

Have a fire escape plan.
Every family can.

If there's a fire, get out.
Use your escape route.

Go to a neighbor's when alone,
Then call 9-1-1 on the phone.

Clothes on fire? Here's your goal:
First stop, then drop, and roll!

-snip-

Here's a couple more contemporary pre-school songs about fire safety from Fire Safety Songs

Firefighter Song
(tune: I'm a Little Teapot)
I'm a little firefighter on the go.
Here is my helmet
Here is my hose.
When I see a fire,
Hear me shout:
"Turn on the water
and put the fire out!"
Shhhhhhhh!

-snip-

I Am A Fireman
(tune: I'm A Little Teapot)

I am a fireman, dressed in red.
With my fire hat on my head.
I can drive the firetruck, fight fire too,
And help to make things safe for you.

-snip-

BTW, and somewhat off subject- I'm wondering if the "Oh Fireman do your duty" song is the source of the jump rope rhyme that I remember from the 1950s and still hear today "Policeman Policeman do your duty" {also known as Police lady Police lady do you duty" or "Mailman Mailman do you duty"}

I'm 51 and just today I was singing it to my wife, who remarked that I must have driven my mother crazy with it. I remember playing it on my little 78 record player over and over. I may be wrong, but I remember it as "raging all around," as opposed to "all about." Anyway, I don't remember the middle lyrics, but I remember at the end, it changes to:

No more fire, raging all around.
There go the firemen who put the fire out.

Not what you are looking for - but this is a cracker:

FIREMAN DO YOUR DUTY
^^ Great Fire of 6 Oct 1854 - started in Gateshead and caused an explosion
(Canny Newcastle - Tape) Johnny Handel

It was a fearful crash - and buildings they went smash!
'Twas never so before.
The hearts of auld lang syne - caught down on coalie Tyne,
Laying waste the desolate shore.
And oh it was a fearful sight - and many a home was lost that night,
A distressing visitation - brought ruin and desolation.
And as amidst the flames they heard - Mossy Seabus' thunderous cry,
Oh fireman do your duty,oh Fireman do your duty!

For lo the flames Vesuvious that spread o'er land and sea,
Laying desolate waste the spot where once had been Newcastle Quay.

Hurrying to and fro countless thousands might be seen,
Imagine at the hairsbreadth escapes from where danger just had been.
The soldiers in solemn silence guarded the dangerous way,
As Firemen willingly pointed hoses to where our Gertie dwelt but yesterday.
The populace rushed forth - indifferently clad in day or night attire,
Like maniacs with maddened brains - rushing from death's devouring fire.
But first!

Oh Fireman do your duty, oh Fireman do your duty!
For lo the flames Vesuvious that spread o'er land and sea,
Laying desolate waste the spot where once had been Newcastle Quay.

Now many serio/comic scenes were enacted - there where poor people did dwell,
As goods and chattels from mysterious cribs - came tumbling downpell mell.
I saw one poor devil maybe just getting up - and trembling all over with dread,
Hop very quickly to one side - as a keel pot, a washbasin and a yetlin fell down on top of his head.
It was fearful to see the poor old wives - standing outside their rooms,
Bending over to pick up their bits of things - exposing life and heirlooms.
And again!

Oh Fireman do your duty, oh Fireman do your duty!
For lo the flames Vesuvious that spread o'er land and sea,
Laying desolate waste the spot where once had been Newcastle Quay.

Holly Hinnie threw a bed out of the window - but never mind the fall,
Siezed hold of Ned's Sunday breeches that he bought last Saturday - but never wore at all.
No way you would ever think -
That decent folk go to bed everyday at about ten o'clock at night should suddenly wake up and find themselves so close upon death's brink!
And yet again!

Oh Fireman do your duty, oh Fireman do your duty!
For lo the flames Vesuvious that spread o'er land and sea,
Laying desolate waste the spot where once had been Newcastle Quay.

Holly Hinnie rushing the crowd to see - for the smoke is getting dense,
And looking for Jimmy Mark - for the little laddie has no sense.
But there's a crowd of men down there - Oh Mister, I'll claim your attention,
Have you seen my darling little son - and what he's like I'll gladly mention?
Once more!

Oh Fireman do your duty, oh Fireman do your duty!
For lo the flames Vesuvious that spread o'er land and sea,
Laying desolate waste the spot where once had been Newcastle Quay.

He's no scholar bless the laddie - but he beats them all when he smokes and chews,
He's very partial to military movements of all kinds - but in particular Sandgate Rows!
He's got his militia clothes on - and you'd know him in a crack,
Besides some stripes for good behaviour - but the Sergeant had to put them on his back!
His appearance commands respect - have you not seen him going by?
And his noble countenance is further enhanced - by the appearance of a single big black eye!
Last Time!

Oh Fireman do your duty, oh Fireman do your duty!
For lo the flames Vesuvious that spread o'er land and sea,
Laying desolate waste the spot where once had been Newcastle Quay.

I remember the song well. I just googled the same words you posted (exactly) to get more of the song. I was about 7-8 years old around 1950 when I first heard it. That's all I remember but I can recall my parents bought another record with it. (Perhaps the recording was on the reverse side of this yellow 45 rpm.) It's title was "A Tisket A Tasket." Good luck in our search.

I remember this song from a record that my teacher played in kindergarten. I was 5 years old at the time. After 57 years I only remember 2 lines of it:

Fire, Fire, Fire, raging all about
Here come the firemen to put the fire out

Does anyone know the entire song ? Come on all you 60+ folks. Try to help out on this one. SOL ZELLER
