Subject: RE: Mrs Pavane sings - in Welsh From: katlaughing Date: 25 Aug 04 - 05:06 PM What a strong and beautiful voice she has! Thanks for sharing this with us. I recently found one of my ancestors, Ellis Pugh, Sr., wrote the first printed book in America written in Welsh. A revised copy of the book was reprinted in London in 1739 and is in the National Library of Wales. This is the first time I've ever heard a complete song in Welsh. Thanks, very much. kat |
Subject: RE: Mrs Pavane sings - in Welsh From: pavane Date: 26 Aug 04 - 05:09 AM I will try and get her to record more Welsh songs next time we are in the studio. Her CD's are aimed at the 'older audience' whom she entertains at day centres, nursing homes and respite hotels. Therefore she tends to record classic pop songs instead of folk. (She only rarely manages to sell CDs in pubs & clubs) |
Subject: RE: Mrs Pavane sings - in Welsh From: Chris in Wheaton Date: 26 Aug 04 - 11:20 AM Mrs. P --Really enjoyed hearing Dawne singing - I hope that she will have more Welsh songs available - please encourage her and let us know if there are more recording. Kat - I have finally found the time to learn Welsh and get information on my Welsh roots, plus I have been greatly pleased to see here and elsewhere that the Welsh love of a good song - melody, harmony and lyrics - is still flourishing. If you haven't had the chance to hear the group Plethyn, I'd recommend either "Seidir Ddoe" or their "Best of" cd's on Sain. I think that the group's Linda Healy has one of the great voices that is found anywhere. Hwyl fawr, Chris yn Wheaton |
Subject: RE: Mrs Pavane sings - in Welsh From: katlaughing Date: 26 Aug 04 - 11:45 AM Thanks, Chris! Good for you.:-) Pavane...thanks, again. |
Subject: RE: Mrs Pavane sings - in Welsh From: CarolC Date: 26 Aug 04 - 12:00 PM She should definitely record more Welsh songs. She has a wonderful voice and Welsh ia a very beautiful language. It might be worth having her record harmonies with herself in a recording. I bet that would be stunning. |
Subject: RE: Mrs Pavane sings - in Welsh From: GUEST Date: 26 Aug 04 - 09:49 PM why aren't there more welsh singers, and more welsh songs performed in this country..the music is almost unknown, strange for a country that has a reputation for great choral music, great singers (bryn terfel et) and great pop/rock musicians..it seems that welsh folk music is nowhere johnm |
Subject: RE: Mrs Pavane sings - in Welsh From: pavane Date: 27 Aug 04 - 02:28 AM Guest - which country? There are plenty of singers, but songs in Welsh don't get much publicity outside Wales. I do play Welsh tunes wherever I play, but there is nothing to distinguish them from other UK music except the titles! |
Subject: RE: Mrs Pavane sings - in Welsh From: pavane Date: 28 Aug 04 - 02:23 AM Something I didn't mention - I have heard several native Welsh speakers refer to Welsh as 'The language of the angels'. I can't see why, myself, but then as a Londoner, I never came into contact with it until I moved to Wales. |
Subject: RE: Mrs Pavane sings - in Welsh From: Mary Humphreys Date: 28 Aug 04 - 12:14 PM I sang a song in Welsh ( Y gwcw fach lwydlas) at Whitby only yesterday. Someone came up to me and said how rare it was to hear it sung, particularly as Irish and Scots singers will happily sing in their native tongue. I try to include at least one song in Welsh per gig. Subject: RE: Mrs Pavane sings - in Welsh From: Splott Man Date: 31 Aug 04 - 08:07 AM Pat & I will be at Banbury, and no doubt we'll be doing some Welsh tunes, and hopefully Pat'll sing in Welsh if asked. Vicki and Trefor will be there too, and Derek always insists they sing Myfanwy. |
