Subject: Lyr Add: WEDDING BELLS (Hank Williams)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 06 Feb 18 - 05:14 PM

This is a more complete version of the song that Louie Roy quoted from above:

WEDDING BELLS
As recorded by Hank Williams, 1949

I have the invitation that you sent me.
You wanted me to see you change your name.
I couldn't stand to see you wed another,
But, dear, I hope you're happy just the same.

Wedding bells are ringing in the chapel
That should be ringing now for you and me.
Down the aisle with someone else you're walking.
Those wedding bells will never ring for me.

I planned a little cottage in the valley.
I even bought a little band of gold.
I thought someday I'd place it on your finger,
But now the future looks so dark and cold.

Wedding bells are ringing in the chapel.
I hear the children laughing now with glee.
At home alone I hang my head in sorrow,
For wedding bells will never ring for me.

I fancy that I see a bunch of roses,
A blossom from an orange tree in your hair.
While the organ plays "I Love You Truly,"
Please let me pretend that I am there.

Wedding bells are ringing in the chapel
Ever since the day you set me free.
I knew someday that you would wed another,
But wedding bells will never ring for me.

NO WEDDING BELLS FOR ME
Words, E. P. Moran & Will A. Heelan. Music, Seymour Furth. 1906.

VERSE 1: Fair woman first was built ad lib on some installment plan.
Her main foundation was the rib of poor unlucky man.
Each man to get that rib of his, must wed some maiden fair.
But not for me, although there is a lot of ribs to spare.

CHORUS 1: No wedding bells for me.
I'm as happy as can be.
Let the others all pick their ribs.
As for me, I don't like spare-ribs.
Gee whiz! I'm glad I'm free!
No wedding bells for me.

VERSE 2: My friend said, "Batch, come dine with me. My wife's a splendid cook."
When Missus Sauer saw me, she just gave His Nibs a look.
A dozen kids began to shout while at the table there.
The baby took some sauerkraut and rubbed it in my hair.

CHORUS 2: No wedding bells for me.
I'm as happy as can be.
Tempt me not with trial marriage.
I'll not push a baby carriage.
Gee whiz! I'm glad I'm free!
No wedding bells for me.

VERSE 3: A girl who held an infant child was hanging on a strap.
I had a seat, and when she smiled, I took her on my lap.
I'm speaking of the baby, not the lady, understand.
I scarcely had her when I got the laugh to beat the band.

CHORUS 3: No wedding bells for me.
I'm as happy as can be.
Down my spine I felt a shiver.
Someone whistled Swanee River.
Gee whiz! I'm glad I'm free!
No wedding bells for me.

EXTRA VERSES, MALE VERSION:

VERSE 4: "Please match this silk," my best girl said. "Crushed strawberry will do."
I'd have to shop when we were wed, so to the store I flew.
I tried to rush right out again. Crowds made a counter-rush.
I yelled, "Give me strawberry plain. I'll crush it in the crush!"

CHORUS 4: No wedding bells for me.
I'm as happy as can be.
Broke my leg; the pain grew fiercer.
Clerk said, "Crutches top floor rear, sir."
Gee whiz! I'm glad I'm free!
No wedding bells for me.

VERSE 5: I met the Brown girls yesterday with golf sticks going out.
Mama at whist had gone to play, and Grandma, too, no doubt.
They said, "We think Aunt Kate must be at tennis down the path,
But Papa's with the baby. He is giving it a bath."

CHORUS 5: No wedding bells for me.
I'm as happy as can be.
When Brown had it clean and tidy,
He asked me to pass its "didy."
Gee whiz! I'm glad I'm free!
No wedding bells for me.

VERSE 6: I'd take a wife one time I thought, but whose wife could I take?
I loved a widow whom I brought to skate upon the lake.
To break the silence, all in vain, I tried just once or twice.
To break the news I tried again and then I broke the ice.

CHORUS 6: No wedding bells for me.
I'm as happy as can be.
Tried to catch a grip and hallooed.
Caught the grippe; pneumonia followed.
Gee whiz! I'm glad I'm free!
No wedding bells for me.

[The recorded version sung by Bob Roberts, which Sinsull provided the link to above, consists of verses and choruses 1, 6, and 2, in that order.

[The sheet music also contains 3 "Extra verses—female version."]

Dean Martin done this song in the 1960s

Wedding bells will never ring for me

I have the invitation that you sent me
you wanted me to see you change your name
I couldn't stand to see you wed another
But I hope you're happy just the same

Wedding bells are ringing in the chapel
That should be ringing now for you and me
Down the aisle with someone else you're walking
So those wedding bells will never ring for me

I planned a little cottage in the valley
I even bought a little band of gold
I thought someday I'd place it on you finger
But now the future looks so dark and cold

Wedding bells are ring in the chapel
But those wedding bells will never ring for me
