Subject: RE: 2004 Getaway Program info From: Alaska Mike Date: 02 Sep 04 - 10:17 AM KT and Ebbie both at the Getaway!!! Alright, an Alaskan contingent. We'll have to teach them all the Alaska Flag Song. This is going to be so much fun. I can't hardly wait. Mike |
Subject: RE: 2004 Getaway Program info From: GUEST,Big Mick at the library and cookieless Date: 02 Sep 04 - 03:26 PM Damn, but this thing just gets better and better. I am going to have to recruit more Michiganders to try and keep up with the Brits and the Alaskans. And I finally get to meet KT 3D. This is going to be a great gathering. All the best, Mick |

Subject: RE: 2004 Getaway Program info From: GUEST,GracieK Date: 08 Sep 04 - 01:36 PM Pete, Will and I plan to attend. We just need to get our act together to register. We had a great time last year despite the cold. Thanks to Charlie and Rita and everyone else involved for making this year's Getaway possible. |
Subject: RE: 2004 Getaway Program info From: CET Date: 12 Sep 04 - 06:12 AM It's looking like I'm not going to have the commitments at work that I thought I was going to have, so our registration should be in the mail today or tomorrow. If it's not too late for suggestions, how about a crime and punishment session? I like the idea of a progressive crime session, but in most of the songs I know the criminal just dies (hanging, firing squad, guillotine) and never gets as far as jail. Big fat choruses - you bet! Edmund |
Subject: RE: 2004 Getaway Program info From: Ron Davies Date: 12 Sep 04 - 07:52 AM "Fat choruses", especially according to Dave Diamond's definition of it, sounds spectacular. Now that's filling stuff--hate to be anything programmed against it. Also, I'm with Sinsull---Civil War songs are always great--they'll never fade in appeal. |
Subject: RE: 2004 Getaway Program info From: GUEST Date: 12 Sep 04 - 02:15 PM How about Revolutionary War songs? Dani |
Subject: RE: 2004 Getaway Program info From: Fortunato Date: 13 Sep 04 - 09:22 AM Folks who are in town or passing through might like to come by our house on Thursday night, 10/14 before the Getaway, for a jam/singaround to welcome Micca from over the water? If you don't know or have forgotten I live in Silver Spring, minutes from 495 and short hop to interstate 95 north. We are 38 minutes from BWI and an easy drive to Darlington. PM me for details. cheers, chance |

Subject: RE: 2004 Getaway Program info From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 15 Sep 04 - 05:40 AM I've sent this PM to a few people, but need to put it here: Oh, dear, I knew there was a reason I hadn't registered for the Getaway yet! I had a nagging feeling there was a conflict, and sure enough, I finally got together with the other members of the small group we've formed, and yes, we have a concert. That weekend. With a practice the day before. I have to say I'm really looking forward to the concert- it's our first launch as a group- concertina, harp, recorders, accordion- ancient Irish airs, English country dance tunes, and other sweet melodies. But once again I'm going to miss the Getaway! Allison |
Subject: RE: 2004 Getaway Program info From: GUEST,MMario Date: 15 Sep 04 - 08:32 AM oh-no! Was looking forward to seeing you there... |
Subject: RE: 2004 Getaway Program info From: Janie Date: 15 Sep 04 - 08:36 AM Fortunato, I may be able to join you Thursday night. I will probably leave for the Getaway after work on Thursday. However, I'm not sure I can make it as far as Silver Springs Thursday night. BTW, I am so sorry to have been out of town for your Hillsborough performance. It got rave reviews. Janie |
Subject: RE: 2004 Getaway Program info From: Fortunato Date: 15 Sep 04 - 09:31 AM Janie, (see my PM) hope you can make it. Hillsborough was great fun and Dani is a wonderful person to play for, she and her two girls made us feel greatly welcomed. Glad to hear about the raves! Come help me welcome the MIGHTY MICCA |
Subject: RE: 2004 Getaway Program info From: Jeri Date: 15 Sep 04 - 11:07 AM Allison...SHIT!!! Not about the concert, THAT sounds great. Break a leg (preferably a lobster's) and above all, have fun. I'll miss you at the Getaway. You would love it there. I finally got some ink for my printer, so I should be sending in my registration. |

Subject: RE: 2004 Getaway Program info From: Dani Date: 15 Sep 04 - 11:45 AM I suspect there will be a shanty or two sung at the Getaway ; ) Prior musical commitments are no excuse unless it's a paying gig..... Dani |
Subject: RE: 2004 Getaway Program info From: Tinker Date: 15 Sep 04 - 11:53 AM Since the weekend is already scheduled for making music,it should only make it easier to relocate the sesson to the Getaway.... come on down Charley. Tinker |
Subject: RE: 2004 Getaway Program info From: GUEST,MMario Date: 15 Sep 04 - 11:55 AM and since you're going to be in the area beforehand - you don't have the excuse of not knowing how to get there! |

Subject: RE: 2004 Getaway Program info From: Ferrara Date: 15 Sep 04 - 12:47 PM Out-of-towners who want to go to Fortunato's and Micca's Thursday night party are welcome to spend Thursday night at our place. We have a couple of couches, some mattresses and a floor, and MAYBE my son's room as well although I hope he's coming to the Getaway again. It may be a bit rough and ready, because if I'm running true to form I will still have four dozen things I have to get done before I can leave for the Getaway :-) so probably there will be no offer of cooking Friday breakfast, etc. but who knows? Bagels, anyone? Fortunato, that's why we haven't sent you an RSVP for the Thursday party. We'll be there IF Rita has her stuff together for the Getaway.... Rita |
Subject: RE: 2004 Getaway Program info From: Ferrara Date: 15 Sep 04 - 12:54 PM Program progress note: Carly Gewirz -- bless her heart -- is now acting more or less as Program Co-Chair and doing a wonderful job. We're still in early planning stages but have some wonderful special guests this year, more info as we go along. Carly has been involved with folk music since college, has been a member of FSGW for at least the 25 years that I've been involved with it, and has been to almost every Getaway in that time. She knows many more people than I do, has been a Getaway chair and president of FSGW and held other offices, too numerous to mention, and has great suggestions on the program. And unlike me, she's organized. It's a real pleasure to have her working on the program. Many, many thanks to Carly for the hours she is putting into this. Rita |
Subject: RE: 2004 Getaway Program info From: GUEST,MMario Date: 15 Sep 04 - 01:03 PM Yeah! for both Carly and Rita! (and I can testify that the spare couch is comfortable!) |
Subject: RE: 2004 Getaway Program info From: Alaska Mike Date: 18 Sep 04 - 07:34 PM Only 27 days until it starts, GREAT!!! I want to go to ALL the workshops, listen to ALL the mini-concerts, and stay up ALL night, every night, singing songs with friends. I know I'm not going to be able to do it ALL, but I can't wait for it to begin. Mike |
Subject: RE: 2004 Getaway Program info From: Susan A-R Date: 18 Sep 04 - 10:38 PM I'd be interested in an instrumental harmony jam, tunes slow enough to play with, etc. I'd be willing to bring enough (by ear) to get the ball rolling, and might be able to get notes as well. Dancing didn't seem to be a big hit last year, but those of us who played had a blast. I'd also be willing to help with a Civil War songs workshop, bring lots of music and words, etc. if someone else is able to do any accompaniment. Rita, Bill suggested that I might be able to ride with you folks. Would it be at all helpful if I came over a few hours early and helped oranize stuff? I do a lot of coalating and filing and finding for my dear spouse, and could probably get out to Wheaton by noon or so. Susan A-R |
Subject: RE: 2004 Getaway Program info From: GUEST,Pauline L. Date: 19 Sep 04 - 01:27 AM I'd love to help Susan A-R with an instrumental harmony jam. I agree about playing for dance. Maybe we could put together some more waltzes to play, maybe waltzes and jigs (I love 3s). |
Subject: RE: 2004 Getaway Program info From: kendall Date: 19 Sep 04 - 07:06 AM I know a few Civil War songs if I have any voice. |
Subject: RE: 2004 Getaway Program info From: Carly Date: 19 Sep 04 - 11:16 AM Rita, thank you for those kind words. This will be my 34th Getaway, I think, so obviously it is an important part of my life. Helping out is the least I can do. I'm pulling together some craft activities for the weekend. Is there anyone who would like to learn to spin wool? I can come up with some dropspindles that people can take home afterwards, and enough fleece to drown in, if there is interest.I know, there are so many good music workshops....but since I am helping with the schedule, and I don't want to miss music either, I'm hoping we can put the instruction time in some little used spot early on, and then people can practice as they please all weekend. |
Subject: RE: 2004 Getaway Program info From: Fortunato Date: 19 Sep 04 - 11:23 AM Our PreGetaway Up the Micca will be a potluck starting at 7:00, but if like Dani (who I hope to see) you're traveling throught we can arrange other times to greet you. PM me for details. cheers, chance |
Subject: RE: 2004 Getaway Program info From: Tinker Date: 19 Sep 04 - 01:43 PM Carly, I would love to learn how to use a drop spindle !!! Hopefully we can find a moment during the weekend. kathy |
Subject: RE: 2004 Getaway Program info From: Fortunato Date: 20 Sep 04 - 09:32 AM The ever vigilant Micca has called to remind me that he is violently allergic to seafood. Not wanting to have him puke his pancreas out during the party I've changed the menu to vegetarian chili. regrets to the the gumbo lovers. Sigh. |
Subject: RE: 2004 Getaway Program info From: Allan C. Date: 20 Sep 04 - 10:00 AM Rita, I've seen and heard El Greko and hope you'll give some serious thought to allowing him an opportunity for a mini-concert. I'm sure that most of the Shellbacks and many others from across the pond would agree that he is well worth a good listening. As for me: I'd be perfectly willing to lead a workshop for inept folkies. |
Subject: RE: 2004 Getaway Program info From: GUEST,MMario Date: 20 Sep 04 - 10:15 AM Carly - you are EVIL! just what I need - another fiber addiction! |
Subject: RE: 2004 Getaway Program info From: GutBucketeer Date: 21 Sep 04 - 08:30 AM I finally mailed in my registration. So I'm coming for sure. I'll be driving up sometime Friday afternoon and passing right by BWI if anyone needs a ride. JAB Gutbucketeer |
Subject: RE: 2004 Getaway Program info From: jacqui.c Date: 21 Sep 04 - 08:31 AM I'll go along with Allan C - any opportunity to hear El Greko in action would be very welcome. |
Subject: RE: 2004 Getaway Program info From: Col K Date: 21 Sep 04 - 07:01 PM All this talk of the programme for this years Getaway, and me not coming now. I'm gonna miss you all but I do hope that you have a great time again. Yes I think it would be a good idea to let El Greko do a mini ( or maxi ) concert spot.He is such an excellent songwriter and I am sure that he will make you think with his words. I will be there again, hopefully in future with cols angel as well. All the best to you all Love Col |
Subject: RE: 2004 Getaway Program info From: Susan A-R Date: 22 Sep 04 - 09:07 PM Carli, I think I even still have an old drop spindle somewhere in my wool stuff. I'll dig it up and bring it for Tinker or Mmario. Alas, now wool makes me sneeze (and spinning has always affected my language aversely) Say, maybe I can bring a bunch of gorgeous Green Mountain Spinnery yarn for the silent auction, now that I can't work with it anymore. |
Subject: RE: 2004 Getaway Program info From: Janie Date: 23 Sep 04 - 09:17 AM It may be a little late in the game to toss out some more ideas, but.... What about a workshop on folk songs we sang as children. The Froggy Went a'Courtin' threads made me think of it. And, songs about gardening, the earth, nature, etc. Many of these would probably be "in the tradition" but there are also many traditional songs that would fit. Janie |
Subject: RE: 2004 Getaway Program info From: Carly Date: 23 Sep 04 - 12:38 PM Susan, yarn for the auction is a great idea! I sympathize with the wool problem; my husband is allergic to wool! I do much of my own spinning in other fibers: silk, cotton, etc. I generally start people off with wool because it is easy to get spectacular results fast, and other fibers are generally more expensive. But I will bring some cotton along for those who have problems with wool. |
Subject: RE: 2004 Getaway Program info From: Janie Date: 24 Sep 04 - 11:35 AM Any chance a sneak preview of a preliminary schedule of a priliminary schedule will appear soon? I don't mean to be impatient----but I am. I've said it before, but it bears repeating: I am sure I am not the only mom, dad, wife, husband in the bunch who experiences the Getaway weekend as a soul-and-sanity restoring weekend. Just music, fellowship, and good food we didn't have to cook or clean up. The FSGW folks are living saints to have designed this wonderful event. It is a lot of work for a lot of you, and comes across as a labor of love. Thank you very, very much. Janie |
Subject: RE: 2004 Getaway Program info From: Ferrara Date: 24 Sep 04 - 03:58 PM Carly, Nancy King and I are meeting Sunday to pull together a preliminary copy of the preliminary schedule, but I can let you know a few folks who will be there. Figure that most, or all, of the following people will be giving mini concerts, leading workshops or just contributing to the music and you'll have a small picture of the blockbuster weekend it's going to be. (Sandy & Caroline Paton); Big Mick Lane; (Saul Broudy) ; Jack Beck Norman & Betty MacDonald (From northwest England near Newcastle-on-Tyne) Ed Trickett Elizabeth LaPrelle Well this is a start, huh? The hardest part this year (again!) is going to be setting up enough workshops so there's room for everybody, without driving everyone NUTS trying to see and hear everything at once. Not a bad problem to have. More soon, Rita guess I'd better post this and test all those links ha-ha.... |
Subject: RE: 2004 Getaway Program info From: Ferrara Date: 24 Sep 04 - 04:04 PM ps Sorry I couldn't find the MacDonalds web site, or one for Big Mick, and of course you can also get info about Sandy & Caroline at Folk Legacy. But we Don't Know Yet who's going to be leading what, for the most part. I betcha one thing though -- it will be a good time. We'll have a proposed list of workshops by Monday. Sooner if possible.... Rita |
Subject: RE: 2004 Getaway Program info From: Bill D Date: 24 Sep 04 - 04:52 PM I just reminded Rita that she didn't mention El Greco, but you knew about HIM, already, hmm? So add him to that list above of folks you'll see doing stuff.... and of course, many of the usual suspects...including yourself. as Rita says, more later |
Subject: RE: 2004 Getaway Program info From: Ferrara Date: 24 Sep 04 - 08:54 PM Actually, I don't think I mentioned anyone who was already mentioned at the start of this thread, except Mick Lane. Forgot I had mentioned him already.... Definitely there are other wonderful wonderful musicians in addition to the batch I just named but you already knew about them. |
Subject: RE: 2004 Getaway Program info From: Ferrara Date: 27 Sep 04 - 12:57 PM Wonderful meeting yesterday with Carly & Nancy. Now we have many, many phone calls, PMs and e-mails to send out.... :-) I was feeling smug because I already put El Greko's name on my mini concert list back in late August, having a sneaky idea that it would be well worth it. But after I read all those requests, I thought I'd go back and review my correspondence with him about it. Haha, there was no correspondence because I forgot to talk to El Greko about it. Oh well. He is now signed up for a mini concert. And, we're going to have "What I Learned from Rick Fielding." Lovely idea, Jeri. We had to limit the number of mini concerts or there would be no participatory stuff, but it was SO hard to do! We could easily have had twice as many. If we missed you and you'd like to be considered for a mini next year, talk to the program chair as soon as you know you're coming. Other stuff too numerous to mention, more later. Rita |
Subject: RE: 2004 Getaway Program info From: Jeri Date: 27 Sep 04 - 01:47 PM I'm just the first one who typed it out loud, Rita. I have a feeling there were loads of people thinking it. I think it should a be joyfyul, warmly irreverent workshop about the ripples caused when one man's life plopped into the waters of ours. I'm glad El Greko is doing a mini-concert, and I hope I won't have a conflict. I hope I don't have a conflict with ANY of those folks you have scheduled. It looks like it's going to be one HELL of a year! |
Subject: RE: 2004 Getaway Program info From: Bill D Date: 27 Sep 04 - 02:09 PM Friday night there will be a cloning workshop for those who can't stand to miss anything......however, your meals have to be shared among your clones. |
Subject: RE: 2004 Getaway Program info From: jacqui.c Date: 27 Sep 04 - 02:15 PM Bill - there will be some people who can NEVER be cloned (naming no names!) |
Subject: RE: 2004 Getaway Program info From: Tinker Date: 27 Sep 04 - 02:21 PM Bill, that might be the most effective weight loss yet... I find myself increasingly distracted by Getaway and it'll only get worse once the program gets distributed. What a wonderful problem. tinker |
