Subject: RE: good scottish song site From: Jim McLean Date: 25 Aug 04 - 06:29 AM It's just a shame they didn't give me credits as the writer/composer of The Ballad of Glencoe (properly known as The Massacre of Glencoe) |
Subject: RE: good scottish song site From: Davetnova Date: 25 Aug 04 - 06:55 AM Jim I noticed on at least one song that the compiler had admitted that his records are incomplete and asking for any corrections/accreditations to be emailed to him, I'm sure he would appreciate hearing from you and correcting the entry. |

Subject: RE: good scottish song site From: Jim McLean Date: 27 Aug 04 - 05:06 AM Another site which does does not give me credits! I'm fated to join Mr Anon and Mr Trad! |
Subject: RE: good scottish song site From: Maryrrf Date: 27 Aug 04 - 09:13 AM Jim, just out of curiosity, how does that make you feel??? On the one hand it must be great to have written a song that is so good and so traditional sounding that EVERYBODY assumes it's traditional. Personally I can't imagine a higher compliment. But on the other hand it must be very, very annoying not to get credit (or royalties!) for your work ! |
Subject: RE: good scottish song site From: Jim McLean Date: 27 Aug 04 - 09:54 AM It is a bit irritating especially as a quick search in Google gives all the info. My main worry is that when no credits are given, viewers automatically think it's Trad. |
Subject: RE: good scottish song site From: GUEST,Alan Ross Date: 27 Aug 04 - 04:23 PM Quite agree Jim. People don't realise the practical consequences of not crediting songs and, the way that some modern songs can be too well known for their own good. There are major complications over getting titles of songs right and giving due credit. The way copyright societies hold registrations can be partly mucked up by careless crediting and titling. Also spurious histories arise due to ingorance by people sharing misinformation and often wonkily misquoted lyrics. Not everybody wants payment for every printed use of their work - but surely a name and copyright details should be given on these sites. With Scottish music they keep misusing the term 'Traditional' favourites. But that's a whole discussion gone into many times! See such discussion under "I wrote that traditional song" |
Subject: RE: good scottish song site From: Susanne (skw) Date: 28 Aug 04 - 03:47 AM Jim, have you checked whether there are any uncredited songs of yours in My Songbook? If so, let me know, and it'll be put right. |
Subject: RE: good scottish song site From: Jim McLean Date: 28 Aug 04 - 04:38 AM Susanne, you seem to be the grateful exception and I thank you for it. Your blue clicky didn't take me to your page so I typed in www.mysongbook.de and got there. Many thanks. |
Subject: RE: good scottish song site From: Jim McLean Date: 28 Aug 04 - 04:27 PM Susanne, I've just noticed that Tibbie Dunbar has four verses and I wrote the last two for the Dubliners in 1966. Johnny McGill is the name of the traditional tune that Burns used. |
Subject: RE: good scottish song site From: Susanne (skw) Date: 30 Aug 04 - 07:09 PM Thanks, Jim. Will be amended. Now, why does that blicky above carry an extra 'www.mudcat.org' in its address? I definitely didn't put it there, but this has happened to me before. Sorry! Any techies can think of an explanation? |
