I am looking for the lyrics (and sheet music if it's out there) for the song The Arrival and the Reunion. I know it is on a dead can dance cd, but I believe the song has medieval origins. I have also seen the song called 'Riunone.' It seems that at least there is some familiarity out there with Dead Can Dance (which admittedly I don't have) so if anyone can give me any help finding these lyrics I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

Dovey

Hi, Dovey - If you search Mudcat for Dead Can Dance (click here to search), you'll find a good deal of information, but not that particular song. Can you post what you know of it?

I believe the song is in Italian, it is on the album titles Aion. It's mostly choral with some percusion and possibly some kind of horn in the background. I don't really know anything else about it and I can't actually find lyrics from any of the Dead Can Dance websites I've gone to.

French site with lyrics

But I have no idea how accurate this is. I don't have this album but I have 3 others or theirs. You can listen to track samples on CD Universe and other online CD stores. One of my favourite tracks of theirs is track two on Aion, the next one after The Arrival and the Reunion, and it is called Saltarello. It is definitely a piece of old Italian dance music.

Dead Can Dance - The Arrival and the Reunion

I'd say love was a magical thing
I'd say love would keep us from pain
Had I been there, had I been there

I would promise you all of my life
But to lose you would cut like a knife
So I don't dare, no I don't dare

'Cause I've never come close in all of these years
You are the only one to stop my tears
And I'm so scared, I'm so scared

Take me back in time maybe I can forget
Turn a different corner and we never would have met
Would you care

I don't understand it, for you it's a breeze
Little by little you've brought me to my knees
Don't you care

No I've never come close in all of these years
You are the only one to stop my tears
I'm so scared of this love

And if all that there is is this fear of being used
I should go back to being lonely and confused
If I could, I would, I swear

Hi Guest,

I'd suggest contacting Lisa Gerrard

Lisa Gerrard - info

As I said before in this thread, I am a big fan of Dead Can Dance and Lisa Gerrard.

I have seen a documentary about her, a couple of decades ago, but I recall that she sometimes creates lyrics based on a language that she makes up herself.

How to kill a thread: suggest that someone ask the composer for the lyrics?

The Guest might turn up again and read it, but who knows?

Helen

It sounds like made-up syllables, which at least one review suggests is what it is (Sputnik Music - Dead Can Dance - Aion.)

It sounds like this at the start:

is-tol-dir gon-dol-ber ka-li-i-i son-dol-ber
in dal-te gran dol-bi ka-li-i vran-dol-ver
ah-ah-ah-ah sel-vi-si

Sounds great though!

Thanks Mick,

I'm totally rubbish at hearing lyrics - either in a language I understand, a foreign language or made-up language. No use asking ME to listen to the lyrics, then.

So, thank goodness you are here, Mick!

As I said earlier, I've been a fan of Dead Can Dance and Lisa Gerrard for yonks, ever since I saw the film Baraka, in fact.

This is one of my favourite DCD tracks:

Yulunga

The visuals on the video are stunning, too.

Helen

A little o/t on a folk forum, shurely? Token use of dulcimer and box does not a folk band make.

Yes, maybe, but we are a helpful bunch here. My music tastes are eclectic so I have some Dead Can Dance CD's.

I'm with Helen here Demiswing. I find that people in the 'folk music' field generally have quite wide-ranging musical interests.

And has Helen says we're a helpful bunch here. We do get queries from non-native English speakers who have more trouble with songs than general English language speech. A few years ago I transcribed several songs from a band called Chron Gen, a british punk band, for someone in the Netherlands (IIRC) whose band wanted to play them, but couldn't make out the lyrics. Not exactly my cup of tea! But it wasn't too hard to take the lyrics down. (I've just had a look - I've got 3 of them still in my song folder on the computer; should I ever feel the urge!)

Mick

Well, like the Mudcatter called punkfolkrocker, I include punk in my list of favourite music, and although I like The Sex Pistols etc, I lean more to The Pogues' brand of punk because of its Irish folk inspiration.
