Just seen that last one..

That was a bit glib , Joe..

I/Net replies generally seem to restrict themselves to Narrow Focus Single Issue Sucking..

I accept this in myself of course.I am a commercial sonic artist..

Sadly , Mac Gayden never replies..Bob Crewe.. I am their biggest fan..I am overweight..Aretha doesn't either , but she's getting married..no she's not..yes she is..

Co Counselling is acknowledged now as a divisive offshoot in the failure of Western Jewish Pschiatry..my life..what you gonna do (shrugs)..

Curtis Mayfield placed idiomatic speech into UNIVERSALS.he painted the world he saw..this time around..there is a Tradition.. I call it The Montessouri Line..

Because of The Orpheus Pavement at Woodchester, Stroud , wee all like this here in Glos UK..

It is all about Geology , in the Human Being Phase..Then we gotta Eat..

More lyrics available on request.. Charley Musselwhite just grunts at my emails.. he so busy being Gone To..Levon Helm just chugs away..thank goodness..Country - Soul and Jazz..

Keep a close eye on The Nurses.. USA and UK..polar opposite divide..

Dear Joe ,

Regrettably , I have not been deluged with offers of Everlasting Love and Devotion from your female punters..or male ones , or stray dogs..

Barricade Re-Union Concert , Paris 24/25 Octobre..Then to Vega Studios, Carpentras.. and La Ciotat..

Gig plotting in the UK , and support for Kevin Gamond's wonderful Music Course at Kidderminster College..

I have my Senior Railcard in France now..

How do I get my U.S. one..

You gonna be useful or Wot, Joe..?

Chris Willey sent me the original lyrics and asked me to post them.

CUMBERLAND BOYS
(Chris Willey)

Cumberland boys are stronger than ironsides,
Their steel flies through fire,
And their souls fear no awakening,
Cumberland boys are deader than lie upon lie.

Cumberland girls go racing on hillsides,
Their lips touch the sky,
And their hair flies over mountains,
Cumberland girls will never believe in lie upon lie.

If I had seen this thing coming,
I would have run to the ground,
I would have called off my searches,
I would have stove this terrible iron right through its eye.

Cumberland sails are redder than sunrise,
Their trees sail through the sky,
But their hearts dip into darkness,
Cumberland boys are deader than eye upon eye.

Thanks, Chris.

Hi Thread.. you got me, here I am..

Alan Got a few lyrics wrong..but I was knocked out by his artistry and generosity of spirit..My first cover version.. It was Stove THIS terrible IRON..You gotta own the Fascistic in order to recognise , acknowledge & suppress it.. temporarily..Get bigger guns and better tricks etc.. We is all Jung here.

UEA pal Julian Smedley is active in S Francisco.. brilliant muso ..Public School UK so dodgy attitudes and behaviours.. I'm Grammar School , so is Al..The Hammersmith Floi-over.. We were both pub-rock in the 70's..

Al is starting to write his own songs..look out..Little kid just as I am to Bill Boazman ( Sonny Black )..wee bit older..

I decided to add to The Overthehillbillies Live OTM 001 and develop OTM Records UK.. LOTS of recordings but no product yet..Help me out a bit and I'll be over the pond.. Gotta give Randy Newman a few quid in royalties..only a few.. More to Allen Toussaint..and Wilton Felder..My Grandaddy was West Point & US High Command, London , WW1.. chriswilley656@yahoo.co.uk... 07564 660696. bw Chris

The booklet to 'On the other hand' says

'Chris is a good friend of mine, a wonderful singer and excellent guitarist. He sang me this song one night and when I asked him where it was from I found that he was a great songwriter too. He wrote this after watching a documentary about the battle of Culloden which set him thinking about the people involved in these battles instead of just the historical events themselves. '

& that's it !

I'd searched for any other references to Chris Willey & Cumberland Boys with no success at all, so thanks Brucie for the references - I shall chase them up.

I think it's a lovely, evocative song. I enjoy Alan Burke's performance - but I would love to hear Chris singing his own song.

Thanks guys for your help

Chris Willey - Guitar/Slide, Bass, Vocals
Chris is a well known and well respected guitarist, vocalist and songwriter in his own right. Originally from Surrey, he has performed in the South and West of England for many years and is highly regarded amongst other professional musicians. He performs with his own bands……."The Tickle Fisherman", The "Overthemoonlighters", The "Overthehillbillies" and the "Bottomless Pit Orchestra"

Possible?

It's kind of a strange song, but it really piques my curiosity. I searched high and low, but couldn't find any recordings of the song or any information about it, other than this link to the Alan Burke album. Does Alan Burke provide any background information on the song? Anybody know who Chris Willey is?
There are some samples of Alan Burke's singing at MySpace.

CUMBERLAND BOYS
(Chris Willey)

Cumberland boys, are stronger than ironside
Their steel touch the sky
And their souls fear no awakening
Cumberland boys are deader than lie upon lie

Cumberland girls go racing o'er hillsides
Their lips touch the sky
And their hair flies over mountains
Cumberland girls will never believe in lie upon lie

If I'd seen this thing coming
I would have run to the ground
I would have called off my searching
I would have stove that terrible iron straight through his eye

Cumberland sails far redder than sunset
Their spears fly through the sky
But their hearts dip into darkness
Cumberland boys deader than lie upon lie

Cumberland boys, are stronger than ironside
Their steel touch the sky
And their souls fear no awakening
Cumberland boys are deader than lie upon lie

Recorded by Alan Burke on 'On The Other Hand'

..... well that's how I heard the lyrics. I'm not convinced about some lines, particularly "I would have stove that terrible iron straight through his eye"

So I would be grateful if anybody can confirm or correct the lyrics.
