Subject: I need three part hormonies
From: musicmick

Hail to thee wise Mudcatters. I have a trio and we do three part harmonies to traditional songs and standards. We don't have trouble coming up with nice sounding parts for the trad but the standards are a little trickier. We have managed to devise decent arrangements for WINTER WONDERLAND, UKULELE LADY, MANANA and QUANDO LE GUSTA and we are well on our way with THE NAUGHTY LADY OF SHADY LANE. We would like to expand our song list with more standards. There must be a source for Mills Brothers or Andrews Sisters type charts.
Do you know where I might look for it? I thank you in advance.

                  Mike

I thank the Gargoyle for his/her attention to typo. It doesn't answer my needs but, like a bard in a blizzard, any poet in a storm.
Now that we have evened out the jocularity, maybe someone can come up with a solution to my trio's little problem. I would like to find a web site that offers 3 part arrangements. I am more than willing to purchase the charts.
I changed the thread title to make it easier for you to get what you're seeking...but the "hormony" was fun while it lasted.

Mike, I have some processes for creating harmonies through the use of ABC notation, but they usually work best for trad songs. In any event this relies profoundly on the quality of the chords selected - like any quality harmony I guess.

I'm sure you'll receive lots of good suggestions here about ready made material, but if you want to DIY then send me a PM - I will try to keep an eye on this thread in the meantime. A Fake Book with melody and guitar chords is a great place to start, but don't spend any money if don't possess one.

Perhaps a wish list of songs would help. I do have an arrangement of 'Paper Doll' which I worked on a couple of years ago and will gladly share - if I can still find it.

Regards, John

I've just worked up a three part NWC file for 'Sentimental Journey' (including the seldom heard verse), which I'll send to Joe Offer tonight and with his good grace will appear in Mudcat MIDIs soon. In the key of C it's probably pitched too high for three male voices, but I'm flying high without any knowledge of your vocal ranges.

In addition I'm having a play with the Ink Spots 'If I Didn't Care', but I'll have to leave that for another day.

Have fun, John

Likewise I've sent 3 part harmonies to Joe for 'Whispering' and 'Smoke Gets In Your Eyes'. They may be 'classics' as opposed to 'stsndards' but I hope that they're of some use - they're both somewhat challenging to sing.

Regards, John

As far as I know, there are no Andrews Sisters charts--at least they never worked from charts, some one may have tried to transcribe them, but they worked everything out by ear--the Mills Brothers probably did the same thing, however it might be a bit easier to copy their stuff because they used jazz horn arrangements--

There are some good websites that you can start with to get links to specific needs Start with Mainely Acapella. They have predominately Acapella stuff but some crossover I have bought sheet music from them. I will look around a bit to see if I can be more helpful. For three part men. I would listen to old Lettermen albums They were three part and fairly easy to duplicate without the notes Just listen. I have written a couple of them out but re-arranged for 4 part. Get the CD original cast recording to Forever Plaid, a musical. Excellent lush harmoies, but again, 4 part. Let me have 24 hours to see what I can find. You may have to do some transposition or arranging in that most male harmony is written TTBB while female is written SSA. Anyway, PM me with specific needs and I am happy to share what information as well as the occasional sheetmusic with you. jimmyt

Jimmy, there's a Mainely A Cappella (in Maine) at http://www.a-cappella.com/. Is that the site you refer to?
John in Brisbane sent me some MIDI files:

Autumn Leaves - Click to play

Sentimental Journey - Click to play

Smoke Gets in Your Eyes - Click to play

Whispering - Click to play

I guess you would call this "close harmony," with the harmony a third above or below most melody notes, with little variation. It's like you'd hear from a hymn sing at church. I don't know how to do it myself, but I'd like to see what others can come up with from these four tunes. If you have an interesting arrangement for these songs, send it to me and I'll try to post it.

My sincere, and usual, gratitude to you all. Except for a really obscure Paddy Reilly song, you guys have never let me down. I dont have the skills to get anything from my computer but I'll have one of my compatriots grab, print, transcribe and purloin everything you have sent. Again, my awe and my thanks.

Vince, at the risk of being accused of being lazy, just right click on the four links above and you can save the files for your own use. Many thanks to Joe Offer for placing these in the Forum.

Ummmmm! I'm not sure whether Joe has posted the NWC files at Mudcat Midis - or MIDI files. They'll have the same musical content, but I'm not sure whether the MIDIs retain the lyrics content. Perhaps Joe can advise please.

Regards, John

Right-o, then.

They're up in MIDI, but I took the MIDI and converted it to NWC, then split the NWC's into three files (Hi-Mid-Lo) and sent 'em off to Mike. No lyrics, I'm afraid, though.

Lazy? Not likely! We're delighted you'd put them up for us in first place... many thanks, eigh?

I've been away for a number of weeks. Cairns is a truly delightful paradise but I hope to not have to return for some time.

If you need more harmonies (with lyrics) please let me know.

I've been trying to pick out the harmonies in a some of the a capella 'Do-Wop' songs from the 50's and I just plain don't have the ear for it.

Anybody got charts or MIDI with parts or ABC for "Let's Go To The Hop", "Blue Moon" (the bass line with the "Bom-ba-bom-ba-bom, Ring-a-ding-dong, Blue Moooooooon" is easy, it's the rest I can't get), or "In The Chapel"?

I'd appreciate finding such a thing.

BB,

NightWing

HARMONY can actually ADD parts with 3rds and 5ths automatically to a tune, which can then form the starting point to an arrangement.

It can save these to abc and MIDI files with lyrics.

It can also display and print each voice indiviually, or all 3 voices on separate staves, with the aligned lyrics.

These facilities may be useful for this purpose.

NightWing, I now have extracted the vocal parts for 'At The Hop'. It consists of the main vocal plus three other parts (for the opening bars of "BBa ba ba ba" ascending chord plus a fifth vocal line which needs to be incorporated at a few crucial points to add punch to the 7th chords. This fifth part is essential to the sound and cannot be omitted. I haven't included the "oh Baby" bass part 'cos ot's easy to pick out yourself - plus I didn't have access to a recording. Likewise there are some minor elements of notation that could be fixed but I believe that it's more than close enough for 'folk music'.

Do you have a particular key that you'd like to perform it in?

Please let me know and I'll either ask Joe to post the MIDI or I'll send it to you.

What does 'In The Chapel' refer to? Chapel of Love, Crying in the Chapel, or something else?

Regards, John

John,

"Crying in the Chapel" (the version I is sung by The Orioles)

You saw me crying in the chapel

The tears I shed were tears of joy

I know the meaning of contentment

I am happy with the Lord

Yes, I'd love to have a MIDI of "At the Hop". I'll PM you with my e-mail address.

GUEST - Callie,

Could I get your transcript of "Come Go With Me".

On-line? Printed via snail mail? MIDI? ABC?

Thank you both very much!

BB,

NightWing

Seek out some stuff by Coope, Boyes and Simpson (Uk acapella harmony trio), they are fantastic.
Th' Antiques Roadshow are worth a listen too, both trio's know their stuff when it comes to three part harmonies.
