From: George Papavgeris

On behalf of Martyn and Dan Wyndham-Read, who are now well under way with their second Song Links project, for English songs that crossed the Atlantic and were adopted/adapted in the US (the first Song Links project, you may remember, did the same with English-Australian songs). They are looking to complete their sponsorship of the 34 tracks on the project. I am pitching in, and I hope that Herga will do the same. Are you, or your folkclub, interested in supporting this exceptional and important work? Read on:
George

====================================================================
This is a list of Songs and Singers for Song Links 2 English Traditional Songs and their American versions, and the tracks still available for sponsorship. Obviously there is the possibility of people choosing the same track, so we will have to go with a 'first come, first served' basis. So far we have recorded 15 of the 36 intended tracks and it is well on the way. We need to have everything finalised by the begining of November in the way of your 5 line dedication including website or relevant details, and funds, as we are looking for a concert CD launch in March or April 2005. This CD will be of the same high standard as the English /Australian Song Links. Both Dan and I do so appreciate your support of this project and we look forward to hearing from you.

The dedication can be e-mailed to us at wyndham.read@ntlworld.com or Paul Adams of Fellside Records paul@fellside.com the cheque for £300 per track made payable to M.Wyndham-Read, and sent to P.O.Box 341, Farnham, Surrey, GU9 OYT.(UK)

Once again many thanks for your support
Martyn and Dan Wyndham - Read.

Can someone explain a little more what this thread is about. someone seems to be asking me(or anyone) to cough up 300 quid, and in return they will record a song. What's it in aid of, exactly? Why should I particularly want them to record a song so much that I'll pay £300 for the privilege? Or, more to the point, why do they need £300 to record a song? Most artists seem to mange to record songs without this kind of assisyance. Is there a collection for charity involved? I really can't make sense of it.

this thread on the launch of the British/Oz Song Links double CD & booklet last year gives info on the Song Links project.

The money is used to record each track & the person/organisation who sponsors the track gets space in the booklet to explain why they sponsored the track & to advertise their club/festival. The booklet will have information about the tracks & where/when they were collected.

If the British/Oz set is anything to go by, the British/US set will be fantastic. 3 clubs I'm involved with sponsored 2 tracks on the first Song Links & friends sponsored another track.

Sorry Greg, I'll have a go here:

The Song Links project began last year, when Martyn Wybdham-Read had the idea of recording for posterity traditional songs that have crossed borders. The first project concentrated on England-Australia, and included 17 English traditional songs which have variously crossed the waters to become adopted and adapted in Australia, and in some cases crossed back to be accepted in their adapted forms back in England.

The 34 songs (17 with an English and an Australian variant each) were recorded by a number of recognised English and Australian performers respectively. Shirley Collins, Dave Fletcher/Bill Whaley, Martin Carthy, Norma Waterson, Tony Rose, the Copper family, John Copper, John Kirkpatrick, Nancy Kerr & James Fagan formed the "English side", while Martyn W-R himself with Dave de Hugard, Danny Spooner, Cathie O'Sullivan, Kate Burke and Ruth Hazleton sang the Australian versions. The result came out as a 40-page book on the subject, accompanied by two CDs with the 17 songs in their two variants.

The costs of the project would have been well over £10,000. This would include paying the performers (standard Musicians Union rate is about £35/hour, estimate 3-4 hours per track incl rehearsals, more where multiple performers are involved), travel and research in Australia, studio time (not less than £30/hour, estimate 3 hours per track with the mixing etc), writing the booklet, proofing, design of booklet and covers, production of the CDs etc.

To help finance the project, organisations and individuals were invited to sponsor a track. The response was enormous both in the UK and in Australia - from folk clubs, folk press, festivals and individuals alike. The sponsors get a mention in the booklet and a complimentary copy of the result - but the real reason they did it was that they felt this was a worthwhile project and wanted to be associated with it.

Song Links 2 is now under way, doing the same but for English traditional songs that went to the US, perhaps were modified somewhere in the Appalachians or someplace, and were adopted there as their own.

I put the notice up on Mudcat, so that individuals can consider becoming sponsors singly or in groups, or perhaps bring this to the attention of the organisers at their regular folk clubs; both in the UK and in the US.

There's another benefit for sponsors: they can buy copies of the CD set at trade price. If a folk club is a sponsor that means it can sell the CD on to its members at a profit or discounted price or a bit of both.

That's probably not such a practical benefit for an individual, of course.

El Grek.. do you know who's sponsored what? (we don't - somebody seems to have picked our May Song but we haven't been told...)

Martyn Wyndham-Read invited me to contribute two song tracks to Song Links 2 and I was delighted to do it, for the offered union scale. I had no knowledge of the way it is financed- or of the sponsorship plan. But, if it worked with Song Links 1, I guess it's an OK thing. This first CD set (Song Links 1) with its well-done and very colorful packaging, is a fine addition to anyone's collection. I'm hoping that Song Links 2 will fare as well, even with my croaky old voice!   Jean

I'm a bit late chiming in on this (thanks for posting it, EG – nice job!), but I'm hoping that Mudcat can help us Yank Folkies redeem ourselves a bit...

To start off, anyone who wants more info should check out Martyn's website and click on the "Song Links" link...

Here's a quote from the site (referring to the Brit-Aussie Song Links):
"To get this project off the ground we needed funding, which was not forthcoming from organisations we had hoped would want to support Song Links. My wife Danni came up with the idea of approaching the Folk Community, that is the festivals, folk clubs, interested individuals, or indeed anyone who loved the music and who would want to be part of this project, and we called this the Dan Plan. I have to say that the response, enthusiasm, goodwill, and generosity was absolutely fantastic..."

Martyn was telling me about Song Links 2 recently, and since I'm from the US, he mentioned to me that when he contacted various US folk organizations, the response was "disappointing". As a transplanted Yank, I can tell you that this is a sterling example of British understatement; not only did he not receive a *single* positive response, but only 2-3 people/organizations gave him the courtesy of any response at all. I have to confess it made me feel a bit embarrassed on behalf of US folkies. I know it's tough times in the US, but surely we, too, have the capacity for "enthusiasm, goodwill, and generosity" in support of such a worthwhile (not to mention fascinating!) project. If you or your organization cannot afford to sponsor a track, then perhaps you know of a group/person who can, or maybe 2 or 3 groups can combine forces... if nothing else, please spread the word.

Cheers,

YY

I have a problem with this. Somebody has come up with the idea of recording for posterity songs that have crossed borders, we can pay up £300 for the advantage of buying one of the resulting CDs at trade price. Someone above says the previous one was "good and interesting too", definitely worth £300 plus then.

There are hundreds if not thousands of albums/CDs in existence that contain songs that have crossed borders and we don't all require someone else to draw pictures for us to explain where they come from.
Many have very well researched notes. There is a mine of information quite readily available if you wish to find out more.

I am not at all surprised that the Americans weren't impressed.

If you have £300 to spare you can easily obtain an amazing amount of not "good and interesting too" material but some wonderful and exciting performance on vinyl and CD even at retail prices, most of which are still available for posterity or at least as long as any current recording will last before crumbling to dust.

Sorry but I am not impressed. Have I missed something?

Only some of the details, GUEST, Hootenanny - for example, if you are a sponsoring club, you can buy any number of copies of the album at trade price for your members. But overall, you got the idea. If that does not impress you, so be it.

Like AliO, I too am sponsoring a track (Mary's and Anahata's Mayday Carol). Whether that's because I am impressionable, or can afford it, or simply care, is of no consequence.

Not so, El Greko. You're absolutely right to say it.

Songlinks 1 was the most fascinating and informative project, not to mention immensely enjoyable. Guest Hootenanny misses the point. It is not merely an 'available source' but an illustration by some of our finest tradition carriers of the extent and development of our cultural heritage.

If Songlinks 2 is one tenth as good it will be worth every penny of the purchase price, especially as I can't myself actually afford to sponsor a song.

A bit more info, from the horse's mouth. Martin WR and others did a workshop on the project at Whitby. He said they'd approached the BBC about the original UK/Oz project, as it was obviously the kind of thing the BBC might be concerned to promote: they said they weren't interested. I can't help being cynical: no surprise there.

I had the CD in my hand last night, but it was a bit more dosh than I had on me.

Just to save others the trouble of checking it out, the link above takes you to a site that is (I believe) Dutch, written in Dutch, and has no connection (at least as far as I can discern – although I admit I'm far from fluent in Dutch) with the rest of this thread.

Countess Richard already entered a great review on the fRoots site.

As for myself, despite my already high expectations after SL1, I have to admit I was bowled over, and over, and over.... The dedication, research and attention to detail which made SL1 such a marvellous piece of work is there also in SL2, and in spades. But there was something more about the concert, that made it even better than the SL1 launch, for me. Hard to put a finger on it, but the presence of so many younger singers lifted my heart, that was certainly one thing. And to see John and Benji, Sara and Kieron together made me frankly jealous, albeit in a nice way. Finally, the presence of a healthy component of American voices in the concert (shame Jean Ritchie couldn't be there) gave a reality to the research and hard work that was palpable. Here were people from both sides of the Atlantic each singing "their" songs, which clearly were related and made somehow relevant to both countries.

In such a pantheon of superb performers it would be hard to single out just a few. John Kirkpatrick was his usual ebullient larger-than-life musician and showman; Bill Whaley & Dave Fletcher rightly attracted the biggest applause; Mary Humphries & Anahata kicked into dust their already lofty standards of performance (why is it that I cannot see them performing without a fixed smile descending on my face?); Sara Grey's voice was that of an angel (and I know she was suffering the day before from a chesty cough, but she miraculously shook it off just in time); Sara's duets with Kieron Means highlighted for me their relationship, with their identical vibratos blending into single dual-tone sound; Martyn's voice has never been better and more mellow; Iris Bishop and John Dipper melted steel with their introductions, solos and accompaniment; Benji Kirkpatrick and Jim Causley's confidence (and Jim's rich voice) belied their age; Jeff Davis' voice and fiddle/guitar playing transported me to distant prairies (there really ARE such wonderful performers, it's not a Hollywood invention!); Southern Brew's close harmony impressed mightily; the Coppers around their "kitchen table", slapping each other on the back kept reaffirming my belief that folk music is music OF the people; and those two lovelies, Emily Portman and Lauren McCormick were a total revelation for me, both by themselves and with Jim Causley as The Devil's Interval.

Favourite songs on the day: Mary & Anahata's "Barbrie Ellen"; John's "Bow Down to the Bonny Broom"; Jeff's "Rose of Allendale"; Jim's "Young Man cut down in his Prime"; Bill & Dave's "Pretty Ploughboy"; and Martyn's & Sara's versions of "Locks & Bolts". Though if you ask me tomorrow I might give you a different set. 34 of the CD's 36 songs performed impeccably in a 3-hour marathon of excellence that had us all spellbound. And Shirley Collins' warm voice and informative and entertaining narration added to make it a wholesome feast to delight any lover of people, their music and their history.

SL1's originality and SL2's perfection will be hard to beat. But something tells me that is not the end of the SLx series.

Created by the imagination of Martyn, the dedication of his wife Dan, supported by the grass roots of the folk music tradition, and (almost appropriately) ignored by the media, the SL series is one of the most important and lasting scholarly projects undertaken in the last 100 years in the field of English language traditional music; and unique because it is also immensely entertaining.

Mudcat, you should be proud to be a sponsor.

A wonderful afternoon and so lovely to see, as El Greko has said, a strong contingent of young singers who all looked and sounded as if they thoroughly enjoyed what they were doing.

Great songs all well sung.

AND the sun shone!

What a superb day yesterday was!
I've only just arrived back "oop north", and finally gotten on-line to find that the mighty El Greko has beaten me to it! We two had sat up well into the night absolutely knackered but trying (in vain!) to "descend" from the lofty heights that the launch concert had transported us to. It really was an inspirational afternoon, a marathon of just the right kind for us non-athletic types! A tremendous occasion, befitting an equally tremendous achievement on the part of (especially) Martyn WR together with those two most unsung of heroes - his lovely wife Dan and "Mr Fellside" (Paul Adams). We'd already discussed the list of highlights and performances to single out (though everyone was a star really!), so a hearty "hear hear" resounds in this parish to every word of El Greko's posting. And as Moses quoth, the sun did shine most gloriously... and all was well with the world...
Sincere and serious thanks to everyone involved with the launch, you made an old man very very happy!
MM

...and I would love to have been there- but didn't even know that the concert was happening. Too much traveling lately! But I'm so glad to hear it went well, and that everyone was happy, and that the sun shone!

Since I have never yet managed to see you live, kytrad, I remain disappointed that you weren't there, though your two tracks on the album were ably and valiantly substituted in the concert. Next month I'm really looking forward to seeing your three compatriots, Peggy, Mike and Pete Seeger together in concert here in London. Maybe you'll follow? Please?

Meanwhile you might be interested in my fRoots review of the concert here, , referred to above by El Greko.

A very lively review, Countess Richard, well done- and thanks for the kindly mention. Yes, I love coming back to England, have great memories of my sojourns throughout the country in the 1950s, when singers sang at normal speed and mostly without accompaniment. I had a Fulbright scholarship, to find and compare my Appalachian family's songs with their forebears, or coexisting variants in "The Old Country." So many good friends we made, and endless miles of songs now sleeping as fragile, dusty tapes on our shelves. We're working of course to get them preserved, but who knows how much time there is?Age, a terrorist attack, falling downstairs, choking on a poisoned apple (i.e. Sleeping Beauty!). But we love our work and our life and aim to keep on keeping on while we can. So- someday you and I may meet in England, joining in the same chorus! Joy and blessings, Jean PS: I'm sorry- but must stop because hundreds of different stories leap to mind and cannot be told here...

Keep on keeping on. Yes, it's what we've gotta do. Thank you, kytrad. And look after those tapes!

Mudcat, you should be proud to be a sponsor.

Quite right - many thanks to all the mudcatters who joined in the commulanl Mudcat sponsorship, and also to those who sponsored tracks individually, and I was proud to see their names and that of the Mudcat Café itself printed in the book next to the titles of their respective songs.

The concert was a blast - again thanks to all who came to support it, and the Song Links 2 launch was a much better attended concert than the first one two years ago, with almost every seat filled as well as the bench seats around the edge of the hall. From the stage this was immensely satisfying so thanks to all who helped swell those numbers.

As for the concert itself, I must agree with Countess Richard's comment about Devil's Interval (Lauren McCormick, Emily Portman and Jim Causley) - wonderful harmony singing that was very English and at the same time wonderfully different from anything else remotely like it, and a superb combination of voices.

Also a special mention for Emily Portman: about ten minutes before the concert Martyn was running around the performers asking if anyone knew the American version of the May Carol - Emily volunteered and found herself singing the song in the concert with no warning! (hence the crib sheet)

We've only just got home, having gone on to bookings in Wiltshire and Hampshire, and finally listened to our own copy of the CD on the way back today. It's really a very fine work and we enjoyed every minute of it.

And we're just off to Ely folk club now to hear Sara and Kieron again!

Spoke to MorrleyMan earlier today and was gratified to hear that he's STILL buzzing and slightly disoriented after the concert. It's not just me, then...

Those who missed it: You missed really something; thankfully, you can order copies of the 80-page booklet and double CD from Dick Greenhaus.

HELP!
I was sort of dragooned into being the Mudcat source for Song Links 2 (not that I kicked and screamed overly hard,)

Now that it's out (I'll be getting stocks in in a week or so), I'm not so sure about the discount. To quote Fellside , "The dealer price is less than the discount price to sponsors. If we charged the discount price plus postage from here (they are heavy to post!). With the exchange rate at around $1.80 to 1 they would cost about $22 - $23 each. " And that's without US postage, or the cos of packaging individual copies.

Now, I normally would sell them for $21+S&H. The list price in the UK
is 18 pounds, or $34.02. Elderly charges $22.50, Amazon doesn't have them listed.

I really can't afford to discount from my $21 price.

Any suggestions?

What about me bringing a batch over to the Getaway with me - you save the postage from the UK, then.

Surprised that no-one's mentioned it yet, but there's another review of the launch concert that's worth reading (and even longer than Countess Richard's piece!) at www/netrhythms.com/reviews.html (sorry, haven't worked out how to do them blue clicky things yet) and it's on the Fellside site too I believe.

Heard some of the songs at the Sidmouth concert last year, it was truly magical, totally captivating, can't wait to get my hands on a CD.
