Subject: Flat Pick guru in UK now From: freightdawg Date: 05 Sep 04 - 11:31 PM I was checking Steve Kaufman's website for some other information and happened to notice that he was in the UK for a few dates. I thought I would pass the info on if anyone was interested in hearing him or perhaps attending one of his workshops of flatpicking the guitar. He is a former champion at one of the flatpicking contests here in the US and he has produced a good many video/cd lessons. He will be in Dublin, Helsby, Kennilworth, the Linlithgow folk festival, Sutherland, Edinburgh, Thurso, and Dunfermline. If you are near any of those places you might want to go check him out. His website is here blicky . I have one of his cd's and at least on video he has a nice teaching style. He will be in Albuquerque in November and I plan on attending his workshop then. If anyone attends one of his workshops let me know what you think of him. Freightdawg |

He has a fine teaching style, and everyone there learned something - including some of the best pickers in the UK. Such a nice guy. Cheers Ray |
Subject: RE: Flat Pick guru in UK now From: Murray MacLeod Date: 06 Sep 04 - 01:32 PM Thanks for the reminder freightdawg. I can't believe it's been a year since I started the last thread about his UK tour, but sure enough, it was a year ago. He really is a joy to see and hear, and , as Ray says above, such a nice guy. Everybody who can possibly make it should try to catch at least one of his UK concerts. I shall be seeing him at the Dunfermline gig. |
Subject: RE: Flat Pick guru in UK now From: freightdawg Date: 06 Sep 04 - 07:35 PM Thanks, folks. I've learned a lot from his cds. I have thought it kind of strange in a way, Kaufman is such a stickler about pick movement (down-ups, he calls them) and playing the melody in a recognizable way, while Tony Rice (among others) says that it is impossible to keep up a strict pick movement and is a master at improvisation. Just goes to show how much of an art this thing we call music really is. Any other reviews of Steve's music or teaching styles would be greatly appreciated! Freightdawg |
