Anybody have the words handy to Maria Muldaur's "Cooking Breakfast For The Ones I Love"? Much obliged.

There's a .wav file on this page. It's unlabeled, but I think it's Maria Muldaur.

The lyrics below are mostly copied from http://www.io.com/~jlc/alt_days/ad_lyr/lyr_014.html but I made some corrections based on several sound samples I found at allmusic, and the above sound file.

COOKING BREAKFAST FOR THE ONE I LOVE
Billy Rose, Henry Tobias

Morning, I'll be getting up.
Morning, I'll be setting up
A tiny table for two.
Breakfast! I'll be making his
Breakfast. He'll be taking his
Shave and his shower:
My happy hour!

The coffee is steaming.
Oh, boy! what I'm dreaming
While I'm cooking breakfast for the one I love.
My baby likes bacon,
And that's what I'm makin'
While I'm cooking breakfast for the one I love.
Our life has been so nice and chummy
Right from the start.
When I won his tummy,
I won his heart.
My baby is happy.
No wonder I'm happy
While I'm cooking breakfast for the one I love.

I'm baking a biscuit.
He's willing to risk it
While I'm cooking breakfast for the one I love.
While wiping the dishes,
What if he breaks a few dishes
While I'm cooking breakfast for the one I love?
I serve a plate of steaming oatmeal.
Taste it, but shucks!*
Who the heck wants oatmeal,
Sprinkled with "Lux?"*
To prove that he's grateful,
He eats a big plateful
And faints right after breakfast with the one he loves.

[Originally sung by Fanny Brice in the musical film "Be Yourself!" 1930.

*shucks/Lux - the original words, apparently. (Lux was a brand of soap.) Muldaur sang "yuck" and "salt" probably because too many people today wouldn't recognize "Lux".]

FYI: The site for the link to the wav files gives you a popup that tries to convince you that you have Spyware already on your PC, then convince you to click on it with promises of cleaning it. Having just done a regular cleanup check, I am skeptical...

Here's a plug for one of my favorite singers, Annette Hanshaw. Among many other wonders of sound, The Red Hot Jazz site has many, many RA sound files of Annette, including Cooking Breakfast For The One I Love, recorded 2/25/1930. If her sound interests you (and it should) quite a few CDs of her music are available. That particular song is from Annette Hanshaw Volume 7 - 1929-1930. I got my copy from Camsco.

"Lux was a brand of soap"

... and was still well recognised as such in Australia well past the 1970s.

The Red Hot Jazz Archive also has a downloadable recording by Lee Morse and Her Bluegrass Boys.

You have the "oatmeal" verse wrong. It goes:

I serve a plate of steaming oatmeal
Taste is but chalk.
Who the heck likes oatmeal
Sprinkled with lox? (Actually, she uses the Yiddish word "mit" intead of "with")
It definitely makes no sense to sprinkle food with Lux.

And of course, since Fanny Brice was first to sing the song, it makes perfect sense to have oatmeal sprinkled with lox - but bacon? Thanks for the correction, Yanogator. [I edited your post as you wished]

Here are two recordings of Fanny Brice herself singing this song. I listened closely to the "Lux"/"lox" lines in each.

The first appears to be from a Victor recording. It sounds like she rhymes "shucks" with "lox". The second line is definitely "mit lox". The first line is less clear, but sounds more like "Taste it but shucks" than like "Tastes just like chalk" to me. In this verse, she has put on a bit more of a Yiddish accent than in the first two verses, so the near-rhyme is closer.

The second is an excerpt from the movie 'Be Yourself!' (a 1930 movie starring Fanny Brice and Robert Armstrong). She sings, "Taste it". He does and replies, "Aw shucks! Who the heck likes oatmeal, Sprinkled with Lux?" fairly clearly.

In addition, each has several minor changes from the lyric above; different from each other as well.

"The folk process" in action, I guess. Listen to them and make your own choice.

BB,
NightWing
