Subject: RE: Lyr Req: the Gems: 'I can't help myself' From: Jim Dixon Date: 10 Sep 04 - 09:27 AM allmusic lists 109 recordings called I CAN'T HELP MYSELF, but it seems there are several songs with the same title. There are still more with similar titles (CAN'T HELP MYSELF, JUST CAN'T HELP MYSELF, I JUST CAN'T HELP MYSELF, etc.). The one recorded by The Gems was written by Leonard Caston and Billy Davis. It includes these lyrics, which I transcribed from a sound sample:
Oh, my darling, I just can't help myself. (I just can't help myself.) (Why?) Why do I hurt inside? (Why?) Why do you make me forget my [pride?]... The one in this group most familiar to me is I CAN'T HELP MYSELF (SUGAR PIE, HONEY BUNCH) written by Lamont Dozier, Brian Holland, and Eddie Holland, which was a big hit for The Four Tops in 1965. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: the Gems: 'I can't help myself' From: Jim Dixon Date: 12 Sep 04 - 12:07 AM I found another sound sample at Yahoo! Shopping and was able to transcribe a bit more: ...when in my heart I know you belong to someone else. Oh, my darling, I just can't help myself. (I just can't help myself.) (Why?) Why do I hurt inside? (Why?) Why do you make me forget my pride? (Why?) Why do I feel so blissful (Why?) but so—ooh!—doggone pitiful? |

Subject: Lyr Add: I CAN'T HELP MYSELF From: Jim Dixon Date: 28 Dec 11 - 11:46 PM I CAN'T HELP MYSELF Leonard Caston / Billy Davis As sung by The Gems on the various-artists collection "A Decade of Chicago's Finest" (1997) (Why?) Why do I want to be near you? (Why?) Why in my sleep do I hear you? (Why?) Why do I get that feeling? (Why?) Oh, that—ooh!—that funny feeling? Why do I want to, oh, kiss your tender lips, When in my heart I know you belong to someone else. Oh, my darling, I just can't help myself. (I just can't help myself.) (Why?) Why do I hurt inside? (Why?) Why do you make me forget my pride? (Why?) Why do I feel so blissful (Why?) but so—ooh!—doggone pitiful? Why do I still hope? Oh, why do I still wish, When in my heart I know you belong to someone else? Oh, my darling, I just can't help myself. (I just can't help myself.) (I can't help myself. I can't help myself. I can't help myself. I can't help myself. I can't help myself. I can't help myself. I can't help myself. I can't help myself.) All my thoughts keep straight to you. You appear in all my dreams. No matter how strange it seems, I'm in love (I'm in love. I'm in love. I'm in love.) With you-oo. (I can't help myself. I can't help myself. I can't help myself. I can't help myself. I can't help myself. I can't help myself. I can't help myself. I can't help myself. I can't help myself. I can't help myself.) FADE. |
