Subject: LYR REQ: "Piney Jane" by Grandpa Jones
From: CarterNut
Date: 03 Nov 98 - 11:36 PM

Am looking for the words to this song, "Piney Jane." I know that it was performed regularly by Grandpa Jones on the Grand Ole Opry up until his death this year. It was written by Cindy Walker. "....of all the girls in all this world there's none like Piney Jane." I apreciate all the help that can be given.

Could this song, possibly, go by another name? Your request has been here for several days now and nobody has come up with anything. I'm pretty familiar with Grandpa's songs and this doesn't ring a bell at all...

Just now I've checked the autobiography Grandpa wrote with Charles K. Wolfe-----EVERYBODY'S GRANDPA (fifty years behind the mike)--------and there's a list that's, supposedly, EVERYTHING Grandpa ever did or recorded---even unissued songs, and the song you're looking for isn't even mentioned once!

Possibly you've got the wrong artist!?!

Bob Wills recorded a version of Piney Jane
Grandpa may not have ever actually recorded it
But I seem to recall seeing him and Ramona
Do it on an old HEE HAW show???

Grandpa Jones regularly did this song on the Grand Ole Opry toward the end of his life. I remember him singing it at his fiftieth anniversary at the Grand Ole Opry, 1997. Just didn't catch all the words. Trust me, I know my artists. Especially Grandpa and the Carter Family.

Sent an E-mail to Dave Para & Cathy Barton who performed a ton with Grandpa and Ramona and Alisha & Ron Wall and Mark Jones too. They recall him doing it, but it's not a strong memory.

Sorry.

If this helps, I have found that the writer of the song is Cindy Walker.

I recently got 2 videos of grandpa--early stuff and later things too (still fun, but sad at the end) that a collector friend put together for me. I really listened carefully looking for this song for you. Again, no luck!

Maybe we should access the Twilight Zone. I bet it's there. ;-)

Off topic only a bit, but this looked like a good place to put it. The Ozark Folk Center is having a Tribute to Grandpa Jones on September 3 and 4, with Ramona and Mark Jones, Alisa Jones Wall, and David Holt. Soooooo, just plan a trip to Arkansas, and ask for yourself! Bet you'd get an answer, and hear some priceless music in the bargain. (I'll post more on the event in a separate thread later ~~ unless of course, Arkie does)

On the authority of A World Reknown Folklorist, the song in question is Pliney Jane. Until I met Grandpa a few years ago, I had always considered him mostly a comedian. After listening to him live, I started listening to records and gained a much greater respect for his music. He was a world class comedian, but no slouch in the singing and picking department either. His son is the better banjo player though.

The Tribute which Dale mentioned is at the Ozark Folk Center in Mountain View, Arkansas on Labor Day weekend. David Holt has been boning up on Grandpa's songs and who knows, maybe Pliney Jane is now in his repertoire.

Yep, with that bit of info from AWRF, I was able to find several search results, though about all I got out of it was that it has been recorded by Roy Rogers and Texas Jim Lewis. Texas Jim's version is on Cattle LP 81, hard but not impossible to find. Look here if you are interested in vinyl reissues of a number of things available nowhere else.

Did ya ever get the lyrics for Pliney Jane? I always wanted th sing it in my band, but the "square dance bit"I learned seems like a bunch a jibberish-"plink-plank-punk said the harper filet sue......"It would be great to know the real words.

The Record Lady has Roy Acuff's version on Requests Page 5. Here are his lyrics

PLINEY JANE (from Roy Acuff)

(chorus - repeated after each verse)
Pliney Jane, Pliney Jane, I'll meet you 'neath the pines
Way down in the piney woods when the moon begins to shine
Plink Plink Plank said the harper, you ought to hear her sing
Of all the girls in all this world, there's none like Pliney Jane

Pliney Jane's a pretty thing, and everywhere she goes
Every place she puts her foot a little flower grows

Some folks see the little stars just only when it's night,
But I see stars just any time when Pliney holds me tight.

Dimple cheeks and eyes of blue and limbs like sugar cane
Lord have mercy on my soul, how I love Pliney Jane

The first time I met Pliney Jane old Cupid took his dart
And rared right back and let it fly smack dab into my heart

The only recording for which I could find a sound sample was one by Tennessee Ernie Ford.

PLINEY JANE (note spelling!) (excerpt)
Cindy Walker

...see the little stars just only when it's night
I see stars any time that Pliney holds me tight.

CHORUS: Pliney Jane, Pliney Jane, I'll meet you 'neath the pine,
Way down in the piney woods when the moon begins to shine.
"Plink plink plank," said the harper.
"Filly-la-loo," said the fifer.
"Yiddle-ding," says the fiddler. Sing.
Of all the girls in all the world, there's none like Pliney Jane.

First time I met Pliney...

[Also recorded by Texas Jim Lewis, Bob Wills & The Texas Playboys, and Bill Gilbert.]

When I worked once with Grandpa and Ramona they did Piney Jane, or Pliney Jane. Since I was part of their backup band, I didn't know which name they were singing. It seems like "Piney Jane" would be correct name since the line: "I'll meet you in the pines" is in the chorus. You might check Cindy Walker's songs she wrote and get the correct name.
