I've booked my day ticket (£12.50)to see the National Youth Folklore Troupe of England, Spiers & Boden and the Demon Barbers, at Folk All Around in Chipping Norton on Saturday 25 September. There's a free singaround in the Fox Hotel on the Friday night (and another, with a charity collection on Sat afternoon).

Info at www.chippingnortonfolk.org.uk.

Any other Catters going?

Kitty

Sorry, Kitty, I cannot share a car with Snuffy for any of the weekend, as I am committed at Concertinas at Witney.
Enjoy!
"I can play ...!"

I won't make it for the Friday night singaround, so probably won't see Snuffy either!

It was a good do!

Merek'n'Dary, Snuffy, Mairi and me were at the singaround yesterday, after Squeezy and Scrapy were topping the bill at the afternoon concert (they were following NYFTE, so joined in with their last number before the interval). The afternoon was great, and the evening performance by the Demon Barbers was stunning. There was a nice winding down singaround at the Fox Hotel after the concert, with Old Sarum morris, and I'd like to thank everyone involved in organising or performing at FAA for a really enjoyable day/evening!

Hi Kitty,

It was a good day wasn't it? I really enjoyed the singaround very much & it was nice to meet friends old & new. Looking forward to seeing you at Banbury, plenty of singing planned for that weekend.

Regards M

Kitty et al
good to see you, glad you enjoyed it. I enjoyed 'winding down' at the Fox aided by a few pints of landlord Johns Hook Norton Steamin On - which may be why I can't remember much about one song with the refrain 'haul away' that I liked - can't find it among the many on Mudcat. Any hints how I can find the lyrics - like the title?

Ta, see you again sometime
Dave

If it's one that Les Sullivan sang you might find it on his CD

Snuffy, thanks for the plug, but I think Dave is referring to the Farewell Shanty, which Pete Sibley sang at the end of the informal singaround (although I'm not sure that foresheets and halliards appeared in the right order).

I haven't tried looking for it in the DT yet, but "tis our sailing time" might find it?

OK, it's in the DT....

THE FAREWELL SHANTY
(Mervyn Vincent)

It is time to go now.
Haul away your anchor.
Haul away your anchor.
'Tis our sailing time.

Get some sail upon her.
Haul away your halyards.
Haul away your halyards.
'Tis our sailing time.

Get her on her course now.
Haul away your foresheets.
Haul away your foresheets.
'Tis our sailing time.

Waves are breaking under.
Haul away down-channel.
Haul away down-channel.
On the evening tide.

When my time is over.
Haul away for Heaven.
Haul away for Heaven.
God be at my side.

thanks Kitty
I did see this, but my memory was that the words (that Pete sang) were a bit different
obviously important to get your foresheets and halliards in the right order . . .

It's satisfying to know that you Catters enjoyed what we did. Speaking form mine own view, it was just as enjoyable getting it going as 'twas to experience.

From one who shouldn't, I'd say Folk All Around was showing great potential for the future (assuming there is one - cash will tell), but it was greatly helped by the atmosphere created by the likes of Kitty, Les, Derek, Mary, Peter, Peter, Peter, Pen, Jill, Dave, Martin, Steve, Ian, Rose, Jane, Jane (aaahhh), Trevor, Trevor, Sarah, Gemma, Marion, Rachel (aaahhh), and loads of uvvers....

Please watch this space for news of 2005.
