THERE'S A SONG IN MY HEART.
A CHORUS AND A TUNE AND VERSE?
ANYONE KNOW IT? IT'S ONE OF RALPH'S.

I recently found a newspaper clipping from a Gang Show, in the 1960s, in Peterborough (they took place in the Elwes Hall - which was near Lincoln Road I seem to remember). I think my mother kept the cutting because my brother was in that particular show. The really creepy thing is that each scouting participant is obviously thickly encrusted with make-up - rouged cheeks, eye make-up, the lot - very peculiar!

Luckily, I was adjudged to be completely talentless in the singing and dancing departments so never took part in any of these weird travesties.

Family and friends of the late George J. A. Houguez, co-founder of the 21st Scout Group, Coventry, District Secretary for many years, will be singing it, unaccompanied, but lead from the front by the ex District Chairman, in true Scout fashion, at his memorial Service next month.

A joyful tribute to a man who gave so much of his time for the benefit of others. There won't be a dry eye in the house. It'll be interesting to see who knows the movements, and if the 'big red football' makes an appearance.

im rehearsing for the nottingham scout gang show at the minute.
we sing:

we're riding along on the crest of the wave
And the sun is in the sky
All of our eyes on the distant horizon
Look out for passers by
We'll do the hailing
While all the ships around are sailing
We're riding along on the crest of the wave
And the world is ours

Sailing the seas is
Great when the breezes
Seem to just blow us along
And though before we
Land there'll be stormy
Weather we'll face it with song
High through the billows we'll go crashing through
We are the gang show crew

then the chorus again but the actions i can remember are on the lines
sun is in the sky (tapping hand on head. up down out!)

There's a history of the Gang Show, apparently written by Ralph Reader, on this page. There is supposed to be a midi file of RIDING ALONG ON THE CREST OF A WAVE if you click on the song title about 3/4 of the way down the page.

The Gang Show seems to be primarily a British and Australian phenomenon. I had never heard of it here in the US – but then I never went further than Cub Scouts.

Wikipedia has an article.

The Gang Show has its own global web site.

I was part of a scouts gang show back in 1964 and sang this song in my wee shorts and stiff scout hat and woggle.

When I think of it now I totally cringe. The gang shows were awful with all that false merriment and brotherhood stuff.

You were supposed to smile and whistle under all difficulties !
Have you ever tried smiling and whistling at the same time ??

I thought there was a second verse, but it just wouldn't come while I was seeking it. 24 hours on a back-burner & suddenly there it was:

We're riding along on the crest of a wave
And the sun is in the sky,
All our eyes on the distant horizon
Look out for passers-by.
We'll do the hailing
While other ships are round us sailing
We're riding along on the crest of a wave
and the world is ours

All hands aboard, boys,
All hands abord, boys,
The ship is calling for more.
We're getting getting ready,
Now for a steady -
Pull-away from the home shore.
We're off to find adventure anyhow
Because we know that now:-

We're riding...

Sailing the seas is -
Great, when the breezes -
Seem just to blow you along.
And though before we -
Land there'll be stormy -
Weather, we'll face it with song
High through the billows we'll go crashing through
With our adventure crew..

We're riding along...

Andy /Fiddler

If it's any consolation, until your post today I thought you were a lot younger than me! MCP told me that the Anchor House club on Teesside used to run a bus home....

I got into campfire singing (Forest School Camps)when I was 11, but don/'t remember the hand actions, sorry!

Kitty

Certainly I remember the hand actions. I remember too many of the rest of the songs from the show as well. (I was a Brownie in one of the acts. That went down well at my all-male senior school.)

The really frightening bit about this thread is: -
Although I now live in Reading I was was brumpt up on Teesside and saw the 66 Gang show in Middlesboro having been involved in all Gang shows from 1964 - 74, accross the river in Stockton!

Can anyone still remember the hand actions! I can still remember the opening of '64 as I was the first little lad aged circa 11 on stage for the gang show 1964!

I suppose folk was a natural development from camp fires with old songs and story telling etc. etc. etc.

Andy

I hadn't really considered it before, but just like camp-fire songs, much of the music from the "Gang Shows" must have passed into the collective conscience to some extent.

I remember seeing some televised, and still have a couple of the song books (1961 & 1962) where every song is "words & music by Ralph Reader" and copyright assigned to The Boy Scouts Association.

The 1962 version is for the 30th anniversary "Show" so there must be a lot of songs out there. And even if (as Theodore Sturgeon said) "Ninety percent of everything is crap" there must be some good stuff in it!

I first learned this in the scouts too around 1958. Instead of the line "while other ships around are sailing", we used to sing "while other suckers do the bailing". Living in England at the time, we thought it came from the Goon Show as they sing it at the end of one of their shows, but it's probably older than that.

Wasn't Ralph Reader once caught with a large brass gong and an even larger loin-cloth clad foreign looking burly bloke...

'What on earth are you doing?' he was asked...

He replied 'I'm sliding a gong on the chest of a slave...!'
