Subject: Scottish Song From: scotia@tyco.net.au Date: 04 Nov 98 - 10:01 PM Does anyone have the lyrics for Loch Maree or Lovely Loch Maree? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Loch Maree From: Jim Dixon Date: 24 Feb 11 - 07:44 PM Allmusic.com says that LOCH MAREE has been recorded by Sara Grey, Hamish MacGregor, Bill Torrance, The Gordon Highlanders, and The Black Watch Pipe Band. I would guess that the last two would be tunes only, without lyrics. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Loch Maree From: Cuilionn Date: 24 Feb 11 - 08:07 PM I can't think of any song more carefully designed to provoke mondegreens than "Loch Maree." The occasional Gaelic words and (to this non-Loch Maree-ite, anyway) obscure local references and terminology defy accurate transcription. I listened to Sara Grey's recording of it for years, trying to get it right--eventually gave up, and that's not something I do often when it comes to linguistic challenges! (That said, Sara Grey's version is really lovely.) --Cuilionn |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Loch Maree From: Dave MacKenzie Date: 25 Feb 11 - 10:54 AM Loch Maree is of course named after a male Celtic saint (Maelrubha), though I've met the occasional female Maree over the years. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Loch Maree From: GUEST,Alex Date: 25 Feb 11 - 06:01 PM Someone should get in touch with Kenny Mackenzie, who wrote it and still lives in Inverness, and ask him for the words! The words on the Foot Stompin' site seem pretty accurate, although the dozens of artists who've recorded it in the lat few decades have certainly all added their own little variations. ALex |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Loch Maree From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 26 Feb 11 - 11:12 AM Tim, thanks for the link to the recording by Anne Lorne Gillies. Her voice is warm and lovely, and her diction is so good that I feel that anybody who takes pencil in hand and listens to her will have the lyrics down soon. I will never forget a moment on our first trip to Scotland, when we came over a hill on a one-lane track, and suddenly before us Loch Maree stretched toward the horizon. It is so beautiful! We pulled over simply to take it all in. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Loch Maree From: GUEST,Aeola Date: 26 Feb 11 - 04:44 PM I've got the words somewhere! Given to me 50 years ago by an accordian player in Loch Torridon. I'll search them out. |
