Subject: BS: Holy Grail found in Hertfordshire?
From: GUEST,John
Date: 18 Sep 04 - 01:22 PM

What do other learned Mudcat members make of this?

From last week's Hertfordshire Mercury newspaper:

Holy Grail: is it here?

ROYSTON Cave may hold the key in the search for the Holy Grail, the famous quest for Christ's chalice dating back to Biblical times.

Grail hunters are set to flock to the historic site following the publication of best-selling novel The Da Vinci Code, by Dan Brown.

The book has fuelled enormous interest in the grail, believed to have been used by Christ at the Last Supper and by Joseph of Arimathea to collect Christ's blood on the cross.

On the trail are places where ancient fellowship of warriors the Knights Templar held sway - and Royston Cave is just one of the places in Hertfordshire which is steeped in Templar lore.

Unexcavated parts of the popular attraction may hold clues to the mystery and some people think there is a distinct possibility the ancient relic is hidden in one of the unexplored caverns.

Cave curator Peter Houldcroft expects to see Grail hunters, including Freemasons, a group connected with its secrets, dropping into the cavern.

He said: "I've had a couple of visits from Masons who are fascinated by the cave. I hope to see quite a few people with The Da Vinci Code tucked under their arm.

"I've read the book myself and it is a fascinating assembly of knowledge."

Local historian and publisher David Perman, who believes grail hunters may also be visiting settlements of the knights in Hertford and Ware, said: "They will see Royston Cave as a possible place to find the grail. Maybe it is there - it's a distinct possibility."

Archaeologist Sylvia Beamon spent 25 years studying the cave and has published a book, Royston Cave: Used by Saints or Sinners?, outlining her theory that it was used by the Knights as a cellar and store for the goods they sold in the market.

She was a little more sceptical as to whether the hidden treasure was in the cave.

She said: "I think the Templar used the cave because of the symbols and signs there. I don't know whether the Holy Grail is there, but I wouldn't have thought it was real possibility. I do try to keep an open mind though!"

The Cambridge-educated historian explained that there are two quadrants in the cave that have yet to be explored and there is another cavern down the road, which she would love to see opened.

The Da Vinci Code has sparked enormous debate about the basic tenets of the Catholic Church.

It claims Jesus was married to Mary Magdalene and had children whom he wished to carry on his message, and that the Vatican blackened Mary's name, calling her a prostitute in a bid to tarnish her image and to make Christ look more divine.

Town may be a base for secret society

A SINISTER secret society said to control the world's governments has members living in Hertford, according to a documentary to be aired on Sky One next week.

The Mercury can exclusively reveal that it will claim the mysterious sect, the Illuminati, rumoured to involve bankers, power brokers and politicians, may have an underground base in the town.

Formed in Bavaria in 1776, the group's high-powered members are said to include George W Bush and his presidential rival John Kerry, who joined Yale University's Skull and Bones club, a branch of the sect.

Conspiracy theorists claim that the society is "bent on world domination" in a shadowy behind-the-scenes bid to control us.

As part of Sky's series on conspiracy theories, journalist Danny Wilson met with Hertford man and insider Tim Acheson, in a bid to meet an Illuminatus.

Tim belongs to a high-ranking family in the Knights Templar, a powerful society of warrior monks which dates back to the Crusades - and who still meet at a secret location in the town.

But he denied a link with former US Secretary of State Dean Acheson, a well-known Templar, who was in President Harry S Truman's inner circle during the 1950s.

Cryptically, he told the Mercury: "I cannot talk about my family connections. The older members of secret societies want to keep them secret, whereas some of the new blood is a bit more open.

"I do know two members of the Illuminati who live here, but I must protect their identities.

"There are powerful and dangerous forces at work here and I cannot risk getting on the wrong side of them."

The Mercury was given a sneak preview of The Illuminati - Our Secret Masters, which will be aired on Sky One next Thursday at 9pm.

Tim, a reporter for conspiracy theory website www.theinsider.org, is seen driving through Bull Plain, Fore Street, Railway Street and St Andrew Street in Hertford with the TV presenter.

They drive to a deserted industrial estate near the town and wait for the shadowy figure to turn up - but Wilson begins to think that he's been led on a wild goose chase.

Finally Tim returns to say his contact has "got cold feet" and backed off meeting the press.

Speaking to the Mercury this week, Tim said: "It is very difficult to get them to reveal themselves, as you can understand, but I hope that it may happen at a later date."

And he promised to reveal more of Hertford's hidden secrets. He said: "Hertford is very important as a centre of mystery and intrigue, more than most people realise."

Next week's programme is one in a four-part series on conspiracy theories showing every Thursday in September.

Funny you should say that. Indiana Jones must be hot on the trail of the Knights Templar, the legendary guardians of the Grail. The Templars are also said to have the Ark of the Covenant, which Jones tracked-down in his greatedt blockbuster, Raiders of the Lost Ark!

The Ark of the Cov. is most likely in Northern Africa, and it's hiding place has NOTHING to do with the so called "Knights Templar"...

Nobody knows where the Ark of the Covenant is. North Africa is just one of many theories. If you aren't aware of the well documented theoretical connections between the Templars and the Ark, you simply haven't done your homework.

Real history is more entertaining than this pseudohistorical stuff with it's "documented theoretical connections", it's shadowy characters, and it's mysterious pie shops--

As for the Grail--if Hitler couldn't find it, it is difficult to imagine that a presenter from Skye TV could--

In consideration of the fact that the Holy Grail was either made of wood or clay..could it have survived..unattended for over 2000 yrs?.
IMO it either no longer exists or has been carefully attended for the whole or most of that time, in which cae someone or some people actually KNOW where it is but will never divulge it.
Best wishes.

Hollywood, that great source of inspiration for many Historical Recreationists, including the SCA.

It's a guess that someone 'allegedly' from a lower socio-economic class would use such an item - but it could equally have been a metal object loaned from someone else.

And 'The Grail' as documented in historical literature was not originally a cup, but a plate.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Interestingly, my spell checker wants to substitute "Staffordshire" for "Hertfordshire" .... :-)
I should have known someone would ask that! It comes from a study I did of the history of that area of the world in that period...but I did that in my early twenties so cannot remember the scource. It might be a good exercise GUEST for you to do your own study and prove me wrong rather than for me to go back and research again. How about it?
Foolestroupe....Your point noted about social classes but as I remember it..only the Scribes/Pharisees/Royalty had metal goods on their tables. I accept that a metal object could have been borrowed, as you put it but it would not really fit in with practices of the times.
Please remember that this is from memory(30yrs ago) and not QED
Best wishes.
Actually, a Grail was found at Hawkstone Park in Shropshire and King Arthur is thought to be buried in Baschurch and Robin Hood, who is linked to the story, comes from Alberbury near Shrewsbury. Read it all in the not-particularly-academic-but-remarkably-believable-and-entertaining book The Seach For the Grail. Details below.
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/yvan.cartwright/books/grail.htm
I intend to write a very learned work proving that King Arthur did, in fact, come from Hull.
Because of its Grail myths, Montsegur became the focus of Nazi archeological expeditions by the Ahnenerbe ("Ancestral Heritage Society") -- a criminal agency of Heinrich Himmler's notorious SS dedicated to identifying past Aryan links with modern Germany through archeology and anthropology. It was the Ahnenerbe which collected skeletons and skulls of concentration camp prisoners specially selected and carefully killed as specimens.
Montsegur was brought to the attention of the Nazi's by Otto Rahn who explored the ruins of Montsegur in 1929 and went on to write two popular Grail novels linking Montsegur and Cathars with the Holy Grail: Kreuzzug gegen den Gral ("Crusade Against the Grail") in 1933 and Luzifers Hofgesinf ("Lucifer's Court") in 1937.
If you want to read more: http://www.russianbooks.org/montsegur/montsegur4.htm
I don't think they found it so it could well be in Hertfordshire.
I remember reading a scholarly work which said that originally the Grail had nothing to do with Christ or the Last Supper. It was said to have fallen from the sky, sent by "angels in Anjou."
I suspect it was a cup made from meteoric iron. Like swords from the same source, it was thought magical.
Cluin, would you please try to be rational? If a time-travelling collector went back and snagged the Holy Grail, leaving a cheap knock-off in its place, then when the collector returned to the present, the Grail would be hereandnow, perhaps in a cave in Hertfordshire, perhaps in a flea market somewhere.
With or without the time-travelling collector, the result is the same.
If the Grail was made of meteoric iron, it would surely have rusted away by now.   But suppose it was a carbonaceous chondrite. Everybody start combing the flea markets for wine glasses that look like stoneware with black nodules.
I can hardly wait to see what they say on The Antiques Road Show.
Aftre two flippant posts I would say that there are several old Templar sites in the area, and Hertford was a centre of activity. Templars were imprisoned in Hertford Castle when the movement was proscribed.
That activity here persists into modern times could suggest a physical link in the area. The Templars were once the wealthiest organisation in Christendom, and the treasure disappeared with them when they went underground.
Who knows?
Hertford also has a unique network of underground tunnels linking many old buildings incuding the castle.
Keith.
Raymond Brown, as we are plugging your paper, perhaps you could plug some of our venues.
Every Monday The Black Horse
First and third Wednesday, The Millstream
Third Sunday afternoon, The White Horse
First Thursday, The Great Eastern
Second Tuesday, The Bell, Benington,
These are all free, and all welcome to listen, join in or perform.
Keith.
Nobody EVER mentions the sheela-na-gig which is also in the Royston Cave (doesn't fit in with their theories). More info see sheelanagig.org
(yes! I made a blue clicky!)
Annie (born and still living in Royston)
Great site Annie, I think it's a bit like when you see pictures of the Gundestrup Cauldron in books about Celtic mythology, they never show you the panel with the Elephant.
The message from "Raymond Brown at the Mercury" sounds ominous:
"More will be revealed in the hunt for the Grail in forthcoming articles in the Mercury..."
More clues to the whereabouts of the Grail perhaps? I guess if it exists it had to be found sooner or later.
I would like to hear more about what the Illuminati and the Knights Templar have to do with all of this.
Then there's the theory that, since the term 'Holy Grail' is a translation from French 'Sanct Graal', it actually started out as 'Sangue Royalle' (or similar) and hasn't anything to do with tableware. :-)
I am not a smart man, by any means, but I allus thought the Grail were the blood line obv Christ and not a cup at all. Last I heared they was a fellow living in France who wabz descended from the Merivingians. That theory makes more sense to me az I don't figure the Templars would waste all thar time chasing and guarding a cup.
"The Da Vinci Code" is partially inspired by the 20-year old book "Holy Blood, Holy Grail," by Michael Baigent, which is back in print. They call it "nonfiction," but I wouldn't go quite so far.
