I found these lyrics in a paper called "La Representación Popular del Maguey y el Pulque en las Artes" by Rodolfo Ramírez Rodríguez. Click for a PDF.

Le pido al cielo que se sequen los magueyes,
porque esos magueyes son causa de mi desgracia;
soy un borracho y a nadie le caigo en gracia,
porque no me ama la mujer que tanto amé.
Tomo una copa, la tomo con apetito;
luego tomo otra, la tomo y luego repito.
Salgo a la calle y luego les pego un grito,

Spaniards were great for poetry, even some among the early settlers. I was raised with New Mexico history; the "pilgrim fathers" were not mentioned except at thanksgiving, celebrated because it was a national holiday, but, when I was young, a subject of amusement to the Spanish-speaking majority (at that time) in Santa Fe. Because of isolation, 16-17th c. Spanish was commonly spoken in the villages until WW2.

Don Gaspar de Villagrá, as a Captain with Oñate, wrote about the conquest and settlement of what is now New Mexico. His versified account, "Historia del Nuevo Mexico," published in Alcala in 1610, in cantos, filled a large book. It is so long that few (if any?) have read the whole thing. The MS is in Santa Fé.

The Rael collection (audio) at American Memory has some of the old Spanish religious songs collected in New Mexico-Colorado. The Smithsonian issued a very good cd of old Spanish fiddle music from New Mexico.

In my 30 years in California, I have met a number of noble elderly people whose ancestors were here long before the Americans came. They impressed on me that the Spanish language and Mexican and Native American culture are a part of California that I must not ignore, that I must learn and appreciate them. I really enjoy it when we dig into songs like these. I wish I knew of better sources for information about Spanish-language music.

Joe, Amos, Sorcha and all, the book in Spanish was the cause of the search. The blurb on the internet indicated that it has 18 versions. This raised my interest.
I have several books with Spanish and Mexican songs. I didn't want to put out $35 (the correct price) for one song, even with 18 var. - especially since I only know that it has to do with some of Mexico's revolutionary history and social problems. If it is well-known, as the blurb suggests, why isn't it along with La Golondrina, etc. in the books I have? I have one coming on the corridos that may help.

I haven't completely searched google, but there are so many watering holes, guest facilities, geographic references etc. that it would take a long time to go through them.
The best way would be to contact a professor of Latin American History and Social Studies. I'm sure someone at SD State, etc. would know.

Amos, are there any particularly good library resources for Spanish songs down there in San Diego? I've looked through a lot of resources, and the only thing I can find it the one book reference I cited above.

Can you tell us anything else about the song, Q? What's the $25 book it's in? I've found that tequila is made from magueyes, a species of agave. Magueyes is also the name of an island that is part of Puerto Rico (click). This page has a book for $35 that's probably the same as your $25 one, Estudio Analitico de la Cancion "Los Magueyes," by Francisco Moncada Garcia. I have a pretty good collection of Spanish-language songbooks, and I checked what I have - no luck.
What's the song about, and how did you hear about it?

A recent book has 18 versions with discussion, but one good version would satisfy me, and save me the $25 asked for the book.
