I will be visiting North Donegal at the end of October, basing myself in Milford (about 10 miles North of Letterkenny) Does anyone know of any sessions within striking distance

McGrory's at Culdaff used to be a big music centre, though I havent played there for a for a few years. Definitely a good place to ring up and make enquiries, anyway.

Raggytash, your best bet at that time of year could be Hudai Beg's at Gweedore (Monday evenings). It's worth a trip to Leo's too, at Crolly, near Dungloe. If the kids are not at home (Enya and the rest of Clannad) you could at least count on a song and an accordian blast from the da.

Culdaff is on the Inishowen peninsula. Not very convenient to Milford. It looks close enough on the map but the roads are not great. Letterkenny is one of the fastest growing towns in the country and there will be sessions in a lot of the pubs. But really, your best bet is as soon as you get to Milford go into a couple of pubs and ask the locals. End of October? Bring a raincoat. Enjoy yourself.

Yes, Culdaff is a bit of a hike, but well worth an exploraory trip if you have some time. Rathmelton is very near Milford, and to the best of my recollection the Bridge is the name of what was the music pub six or eight years ago(time and Guiness can fuzz the memory),. I should look in the phone book for the Bridge and see if anything comes up.

It might be a bit far but I'd aim for Ardara and Oliver's Bar.
Actually, I don't know if they still have good sessions - it's been a few years since we were there.

Raggytash, if you do get into Letterkenny, PLEASE let me know if you hear of anyone willing to let a house or flat in the town, any size, for the week of Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann next year (ie seven nights, arriving Sunday August 21). Letterkenny might be growing fast, but I'm not entirely clear where they're going to accommodate the 250,000 visitors they're expecting.

Oireachtas na Gaeilge is on in Letterkenny the last weekend of Oct, so there is bound to be music there. Especially good event to be at if you like seán nós singing, in Irish & unaccompanied.

Farless convenient to Milford, the Shamrock at Falcarragh, Sat nights I believe. I know the Mon night sessions at Gaoth Dobhair, mentioned by Peter K (Fionn) are still going strong

Started looking for B&B too for next august. Phoned a couple of places but booked already.

Hope the Local Fleadh office getsits act together soon with a list of places.

Feeling withdrawal symptoms as have had bad fall and banged my head then had cough and cold to go with black eyes. So no Irish music for a fortnight.

Looking forward to visiting Donegal next summer. Have been to Sligo. THe Coleman Centre in Gorteen is worth a visit.

Got Accommodation 3 miles out of Letterkenny, which suits my pals. Phoned tourist office. Link below.

Dont think theyve got as far as setting up the Fleadh office as yet or getting local population to take b&b guests. The numbers I was given are for Businesses. The lady at the Tourist office said that there was little accommodation left.

Comhaltas in Dublin havnt got a number for the Office in LK as yet.

It seems odd to be planning the next trip when weve only recently got back.

Raggy, see if you can get across to "McGrorys" in Culdaff, if only to hear the the Great Oyster Rustling story.Packie or Frank the Police chief will enlighten you - failing that get me on a good day in Butlers bear boutique and all will be revealled.

"Maggie Toms" at the crossroads is also a great place to see but you will have to get a local to direct you.

Just done a check on the mileage from Milford to Culdaff and estimate it's about 50 miles, a bit too far for a night time session, especially on Irish lanes at night with Wombat driving (she doesn't see very well in the dark)
However each day we go out to different area and we will hopefully get all over the northern end of Donegal (I've had a couple of trips to the area from Letterkeeny?Dungloe down to Donegal bay)

I don't know anything about the Glencar Inn except that I saw a notice that there are sessions there on Thursday nights from 10-12 pm

The same poster, which I've just seen at Letterkenny's Grianan Theatre, also listed the following sessions in Letterkenny all from 10-12 pm:
Mon.- Brewery Bar, Market Square
Wed. - Central Bar, Main St.
Thursday - Swilly Inn, Gortlee (on the outskirts of town, I think in the Ramelton direction; Glencar is also a bit outside the town centre)

I cannot vouch that these sessions are all current and on the nights stated; do check with the pubs beforehand.

I believe there is set-dancing at the Lagoon in Termon on Monday nights.

there will definitely be music at the Mount Errigal hotel and the Holiday Inn this Sat night 30 Oct 2004, at the Oireachtas festival club (Club na Féile). Also at 7 pm there will be a sean-nós singing competition at the Mount Errigal (& broadcast on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta), and from 10 pm a room will be be set aside for a singing circle, "Club Amhránaíocht ar an Sean-Nós".
