Just to get back to publicity, although I live downunder I have family in the Northern Hemisphere and am always cutting and pasting stuff from mudcat to send them. I was most happy to hear about the New Haven Festival last week. I'm only sorry I couldn't be there to see Arlo Guthrie and the other interesting acts. I posted the info to my son-in-law who was half-an-hour away and he may have got there. I hope one day to come North myself and check out gigs and Festivals. My taste is pretty eclectic so keep it coming guys.

There was an oboe playing on John Renbourn's Another Monday LP, a very long time ago (when I was at school and learning to play the oboe..... ).

IMHO (and with a bit of practice), the oboe can work well in any musical genre. The oboe, versatile as it is, has always been pigeonholed with certain types of music. As much as I love the music typically associated with the oboe, I found myself being constrained (especially at college) by other people's perceptions of what I should be doing!

Amongst other things, I have been in a jazz band (as the only oboist) and a really weird free-style contemporary improvisation group. Folk music in particular, seems to lend itself well with the dark and mellifluous sound of the oboe - I am nonplussed that there aren't more of us around.

I was reared on a diverse mix of music, including folk music of the 60's and 70's revival era. My first (and to be fair only) folk-oboe influence was Sue Harris of early Albion Country Band fame. I recall a workshop she ran (some years back) at Towersey Folk Festival, and the surprise when I walked into a room full of oboists (now there's a thought)!

It took me a while to pluck up the courage to join a session. Sessions are a great way of learning tunes and building up stamina. If you drop out in the middle then there should be others to cover you. I try and use a reed that blends well (rather than sticking out like a saw thumb!). Sessions are great for practicing dynamic control, and I have got used to cutting my volume by half (to the relief of many). Some sessions are so packed that it is a job trying to play loud enough to be heard! Find the sort of session that is encouraging and welcoming. Don't worry if you are not always note perfect – go for it (and remember, when the going gets tough, at least you are not playing the banjo!!)

How about an oboe session if there are so many oboists around! My son loves the idea of joining in sessions but because oboes are fairly loud instruments, he's a bit bothered about going wrong, not knowing the tunes properly etc. He'd love a session with other oboists in!

I was lucky enough to MC these fine peeps at Wallingford Bunkfest and can testify to their amazing musicianship (even with thirty kids running around!)

I was so impressed that I actually BOUGHT their CD instead of blagging one.

I can't get to see them in Banbury as I have a modelling assignment with Anne Summers!

I played my oboe on our soon to be finished (its taken nearly a year) Flying Chaucers CD. In fact I play it several times.....more than several times....they decided to triple track it...my lips were rubber by the end of that!

Yes, we do have an oboe (moonunit) and a bit good she is too. We also have a fiddle player and I play guitar (the bouzouki's a spare time thang!) We play mainly trad English stuff. katlaughing - as regards the website, you need Flash to access it - perhaps that may be why you're having problems? Joe, the chances of us having five gigs in a week is a situation that is unlikely to occur!

Incidentally, we keep running into oboists and former oboists at festivals. Is it worth trying to sell the idea of an oboe workshop to Banbury? Would anyone come?

Erm, I'm a bit new to all this and I don't want to piss anyone off. I play in a band (that shall for the moment reamin nameless!) and we've a fair amount of gigs in the UK coming up. What's the policy on posting messages about your own gigs? I promise I shan't be offended if I start a thread about us playing and it sinks without a trace!
