Heaven seemed so near, darling, when you were here
Now that you're gone, I'll carry on,
But I can't seem to hold back my tears..

does this ring a bell with any one?
perhaps an old Stanley brothers' tune?

the first verse starts: Last night as the stars...
and the second one: Maybe some day, Sweetheart...

i did find a stanley bros. song with "Heaven"
in the lyrics, but not the same one...

Hi Open Mike.

CD track sample: Stanley Brothers: Heaven Seemed So Near

[I love Google.com! I just copied the words "heaven seemed so near" into the search box - with the double quotes to make it search for a phrase - and there they were, the Stanley Brothers. Then I usually look on CD Universe or somewhere like that to see if there is a track sample.

Here's the first verse, pieced together from some sound samples:

Tonight as the stars were shining so bright
I strolled in the moonlight alone.
It broke my heart to think of our past
And it's just not the same since you've gone.

"Heaven Seemed So Near" was written by Al Elliot (bass player of the Clinch Mountain Boys) in 1958.
In an interview which was conducted by Stanley biographers Doug Gordon and Ron Burke III, Al Elliot relaterd that that song was written "about two months before the session sitting at a drive-in theater up in West Virginia. We were sitting there waiting for the show that night...well, I was just thinking about the girl back home, you know, and it just come to my mind. It all come together, the melody and the words, too. Carter liked it. That night after we did the show there, coming back in why I sang it (for him)."
--From notes to The Stanley Brothers: The Early Stardy/King Years 1958-1961 (KBSCDCD-7000, booklet, p. 2)

ok lyrics add here then:

Heaven Seemed So Near, by Al Elliot, 1958

Tonight as the stars were shining so bright
I strolled in the moonlight alone.
It broke my heart to think of our past
And it's just not the same since you've gone.

Heaven seemed so near, darling, when you were here
Now that you're gone, I'll carry on,
But I can't seem to hold back my tears..

Maybe some day Sweetheart, we can share
The dreams we have cherished so long
While you're away I'll be _____ night and day
And I'll wait here until you return

Here it is except for one word in the second verse.
