From: Áine

Does anyone know the tune for this song? I saw it posted over on the IRTRAD-L. -- Áine

I DON'T WORK FOR A LIVING

They say we're all born for a purpose
They say we're all born with a gift
Now some of us try to be famous
I suppose it's by hard work and thrift
There's lots of us fighting and striving
For a seat in the White House you see
But I've got a seat in my trousers
And a missus to work for me.

I don't work for a living
I get along alright without
I don't toil all day
I suppose it because I not built that way
Some people work for love
They say it's all sunshine and gain
But if I don't get sunshine without any work
I guess I'll stay out in the rain.

Now give me a nail and a hammer
And a picture to hang on the wall
Give me a tall stepladder
If you don't, well I might fall
Give me a couple of waiters
And a barrel of good old Bass Ale
And I bet you I'll hang up that picture
If somebody drives the nail
^^

Aine, I've got the song on tape, I could either transcribe it on to noteworthy/midi format for you or send you a .ra of the song, which would you prefer?

Send me your email and I'll send you your choice....

Paul,

Thanks! An .ra file would be great -- my email is on bbc's resource page. You're a wonder!

Metchosin,

I'm glad I could help out -- It looks like a great song and I can't wait to hear it!.

Say, Musicman, if you'd like to transcribe it to MIDI, we can post it for everyone and it can be included in the database. Just e-mail a MIDI to me and I'll post it, or you can use MIDITXT and post it here in this thread. Click on my name below to send me e-mail. Thanks.

Hamish Imlach and Iain MacKintosh adapted the song for musicians:

I suppose you all think it's quite easy
Standing here singing these songs
Last night we only got twelve hours sleep
For us, that's not very long
I'll give my banjo to somebody here
And someone can play my guitar
There's not many words, there's only three chords
And we can go drink at the bar

The following information I got from the IRTRAD-L:

You can get a copy of the sheet music from Gary's Sheet Music at AR's Scavenger Hunt

'The authors of the song were Edward Lee, piano player and brother of Frank Lee (London, Tara Ceili and), leader of the Four Provinces Orchestra in Philadelphia during the 1920s, and James J. Mullan, dubbed at times "High Chief Ranger, USA Irish National Foresters" or "The Singing Insurance Man" on his 78 records. Mullan recorded the song with the Four Provinces in December 1928 for the Columbia company. The recording was reissued in Ireland on Regal Zonophone. Philippe Varlet philvar@erols.com

Dear 'Catters,

I just looked back over this thread, and I just don't believe it -- In seven hours and five minutes, for this one song, we have worked together to get the words, the authors, historical information, and the tune in three different formats! As much as we can (and do) complain about computer technology sometimes, I am truly amazed at this. Let's everyone do a vigorous virtual back-patting on this one!!

Hi!

The thing that really amazes me is that nothing is new under the sun. My father had a 78 recording of this by (New Zealander) Tex Morton, who was popular in Australia in the '40's and '50's playing "hillbilly" music.

I have sung this song for as long as I can remember, and have tailored verses to the audience my "bush" band was playing to. It is the kind of song suitable for such manipulation!

Regards
Chris

Subject: Lyr Add: I DON'T WORK FOR A LIVING^^
From: Tiger
Date: 12 Dec 99 - 09:08 AM

My father-in-law used to sing this, and I have it on pages from a songbook that is so old and worn that all the copyright dates are gone. I'd guess the date as 1920's or 30's, 'cause that's when he learned most of his songs.

Here are two extra verses, two additional choruses, handful of word changes.

....Tiger

I Don't Work For A Living - sung by Bill Garneau
Written by Edward Lee and James J. Mullan

They say we're all born for a purpose,
They say we're all born with a gift.
Now some people rise to be famous,
I suppose it's by hard work and thrift.
There's lots of us fighting and striving
For a seat in the White House, you see,
But I've got a seat in me trousers,
And the Missus to work for me:

    CHORUS 1
    I don't work for a living,
I get along all right without.
    I don't toil all day,
I suppose it because I not built that way
    Some people work for love
And say it's all sunshine and gain,
But if I can't get sunshine without any work,
I think I'll stay out in the rain.

Now give me a nail and a hammer,
And a picture to hang on the wall,
And give me a strong stepladder,
You know that I might fall.
And give me a couple of waiters,
And a barrel of good old Bass Ale,
And I bet you I'll hang up that picture
If somebody drives a nail:

    CHORUS 1

I've got a pal I think the world of
We never agree, this is why
He says he's the laziest person
That he is more lazy than I
So we made a bet to decide it
I won without trying, you see
When he reached for the dough, I just whispered
"Put the bet in my pocket for me."

    CHORUS 2
    I don't work for a living,
I get along all right without.
    I live peacefully,
For labor disputes never worry me
    I love my family,
    And even my mother-in-law
I decided to make them all happy, that's why
I never go home any more.

Now I haven't got a red penny
The reason is I'm always broke
Of pawn tickets I haven't any
My wife's wash is all that's in soak
But I get my three square meals daily
And a place to sleep when it gets dark
If I can't find a bed in the alley
Then I'll find me a bench in the park.

    CHORUS 3
    I don't work for a living,
I get along all right without.
    Work's not meant for me,
Why, even the thought hurts my dignity
My wife does all the work,
She even puts out the ash-can
But last night I got sore when the neighbors all yelled
"Why don't you put out your old man?"
^^

A friend and I were discussing this song at the weekend, we could rustle up a verse between us, and the chorus, but other than that nothing, can anybody supply us with all the lyrics?

Chorus goes....

I don't work for a living
I get along alright without
I don't strive all day
Simply because I'm not built that way
Some people work for money
They say it's all sunshine and gain
But if I can't have sunshine without any work
I'd rather stay out in the rain

Grateful for any additions you have to offer!
Cheers,
Lucy

I bought this very song on a 78rpm record about four hours ago at a record fair in Croydon. English Parlophone red label, E6357 (1920's I should think) by Pete Wiggins with guitar and harmonica. Author is given as LES Mullan though.

I am a grandauughter of James Mullan. He died when I was 7. My father, also a James, used to sing the song too, and we have had many a laugh over it, because he often got the words wrong. My family and I do not have any audio of him singing. Does anyone know how I can find any of his records? The only one we have is badly scratched.

Thanks!

And another verse for you.

He's only an old village postman
Walking up hill and down dale
Bringing you all of your letters
along with the Sketch and the Mail (Shows you how old the song is)
All of your letters he carries
All of your business he knows
'Cos he read all your letters and postcards
As on his delivery he goes

I leant this song off a Dob Davenport Lp

usually sing it right after "William Brown"
Last line of William Brown is

William's now a postman (3)
Well it's better than walking the streets.

Ok. Dob DAvenport LP. Pal Of My Cradle Days. came out in 1974. Trailer. LER 2088 :
Song listed as, "I don't work for a living" (Lee Mullan)

Bob also sings, "William Bown" and "He's Only an Old Village Postman" just before it. That's where I got it all from. They go well together.
