Subject: People who talk crap From: woodsie Date: 26 Sep 04 - 08:04 AM A few years after I started the folk club When I was a Hell's Angel I drank 180 proof moonshine in Mexico, which was in South America and later in Central America. I swallowed a crane fly and was lucky that I didn't drop dead beacause of the strongest venom known to man contained inside that fly! |
Subject: RE: People who talk crap at folk clubs From: woodsie Date: 26 Sep 04 - 08:05 AM Yes this was all related to me while at a certain South London folk club! |
Subject: RE: People who talk crap at folk clubs From: Leadfingers Date: 26 Sep 04 - 08:40 AM What annoys me are the people who SING crap at folk clubs ! |
Subject: RE: People who talk crap at folk clubs From: kendall Date: 26 Sep 04 - 09:02 AM That was some tough fly! moonshine has been known to kill people. The best way to deal with a liar is to confront him. |
Subject: RE: People who talk crap at folk clubs From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 26 Sep 04 - 09:40 AM Can't you play it in another key? We can't sing that high! |
Subject: RE: People who talk crap at folk clubs From: Juan P-B Date: 26 Sep 04 - 11:32 AM Christchurch (UK) Folk Club 1996 "It's alright you singing songs about conscription - What about the poor b*ggers who are 'forced' to fight and don't have any say in it - What about them eh?" .....and the sod was sober!!!! |
Subject: RE: People who talk crap at folk clubs From: Jim Dixon Date: 26 Sep 04 - 11:57 AM Hey! We could move all the BS into the music part of the forum just by titling the threads appropriately, for example: "People who talk politics at folk clubs" – "People who talk about alternative medicine in folk clubs" – "People who talk about conspiracy theories in folk clubs" – etc. Uh, let's not. |
Subject: RE: People who talk crap at folk clubs From: woodsie Date: 26 Sep 04 - 12:07 PM Aaaagh! I've been sussed ... |
Subject: RE: People who talk crap at folk clubs From: Liz the Squeak Date: 26 Sep 04 - 07:03 PM Ah, if only it were confined to folk clubs....... LTS |
Subject: RE: People who talk crap at folk clubs From: Skipjack K8 Date: 26 Sep 04 - 07:26 PM Jim, with genuine respect, I disagree. The quintessential difference between dealing with twats in life and twats in folk music is that if we take life generally, we meet a twat in the street, label them 'twat', and move on. In music, we are imprisoned with them. I was postulating recently that I suspected folk festivals were populated by individuals that were social non-entities until it came to the poor old world of folk, where they can quote the album number of every Ralph McTell release from 1967, and have been to every festival in Upton Cum Snoring since 1943, and therefore I maintain that people talking crap in folk clubs is a specific folk music related pox, and have no problem with Woodsie treading this well-worn path. |
Subject: RE: People who talk crap at folk clubs From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 26 Sep 04 - 10:49 PM "I've got another three verses to that song" |
Subject: RE: People who talk crap at folk clubs From: Little Hawk Date: 26 Sep 04 - 11:03 PM Raptor and I have actually had a plan for some time to go and "talk crap" at a Clinton Hammond performance... |
Subject: RE: People who talk crap at folk clubs From: GUEST,Boab Date: 27 Sep 04 - 04:01 AM I had a long-running [mostly good-natured!] duel with Ian Bruce's brother Frazer carried on by my insistence in guzzling a bag of potato crisps during his first number---I'm a rotten barsteward. |
Subject: RE: People who talk crap at folk clubs From: Joe Offer Date: 27 Sep 04 - 04:16 AM Yeah, but it sounds like chit-chat to me, not music discussion. With all due respect, this thread has been transported to the nether regions of the Forum Menu. But it's nice chit-chat... -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: People who talk crap at folk clubs From: Gervase Date: 27 Sep 04 - 04:41 AM Bang on Skipjcack. My partner and I have long noticed the number of 'special people' drawn towards folk music. Stewarding at festivals gives you a real chance to exercise care in the community with whole herds of 'em. To me, though, that is one of the bittersweet aspects of folk music. It does seem to give all sorts a feeling of belonging and an instant cameraderie, but it can take ages to find an excuse to dash to the bogs or the bar to escape the ramblings of some of the more 'special' amongst us! |
Subject: RE: People who talk crap at folk clubs From: Skipjack K8 Date: 27 Sep 04 - 05:24 AM LOL Gervase, and yeah, I love 'em too, else I would've slung my hook. |
Subject: RE: People who talk crap at folk clubs From: Mr Red Date: 27 Sep 04 - 07:55 AM crap is part of the rich tapestrie of life and Folk Clubs not only cannot escape it they should embrace it (metaphorically) if they wish to purport to represent "FOLK". of course I could be talking a load of crap - which demonstrates my FOLK pedigree. pedants and oxy-morons alike must be turning veritable sumersaults trying to rubbish the above. Have a Nice Day............. |
Subject: RE: People who talk crap at folk clubs From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 27 Sep 04 - 10:02 AM "the way you played it, it didn't sound like my record at home." |
Subject: RE: People who talk crap at folk clubs From: vectis Date: 27 Sep 04 - 06:56 PM Didn't Frazer empty your crisp packet into your beer to shut them up? It really DID happen to one inconsiderate cruncher. |
Subject: RE: People who talk crap at folk clubs From: Cluin Date: 27 Sep 04 - 09:05 PM Little Hawk pecked out: Raptor and I have actually had a plan for some time to go and "talk crap" at a Clinton Hammond performance... Ye'd have helluva job toppin' the crap he talks during the performance. ;) sorry, Clinton |
Subject: RE: People who talk crap at folk clubs From: Little Hawk Date: 27 Sep 04 - 09:23 PM Yes, I think it would be quite memorable... |
Subject: RE: People who talk crap at folk clubs From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 28 Sep 04 - 02:25 AM "You swapped the last two lines of the third and fourth verses" |
Subject: RE: People who talk crap at folk clubs From: Cluin Date: 28 Sep 04 - 02:45 AM "Hey! You changed it! That's not the REAL version like my grandfather/father/Uncle Eephus sang it. What's your e-mail address? I'll send you the REAL words!" |
Subject: RE: People who talk crap at folk clubs From: Liz the Squeak Date: 28 Sep 04 - 04:18 AM Hey Gervase, I wondered where you kept disappearing to! It got so bad with one person, that they were known not as beer or pee breaks but *Eustace breaks. *Not his real name. It got a bit suspicious when the room practically emptied when he got up to perform... he's usually too pissed to remember his words. Luckily he's usually too pissed to notice the mass evacuation as well! LTS |
Subject: RE: People who talk crap at folk clubs From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 28 Sep 04 - 06:22 AM Reminds me of the night the rather inebriated old gentleman, who looked like he was rather down on his luck, and looke like he had several hard past lives as well as this one, got up to sing. There was this tiny night light on a stalk on the wooden music stand - he kept leaning forward to use it as a microphone... |
Subject: RE: People who talk crap at folk clubs From: Dead Horse Date: 28 Sep 04 - 01:22 PM You are singing that in the wrong key (with the wrong tune as well!!!) Now sing the one we like! |

Subject: RE: People who talk crap at folk clubs From: Dave Bryant Date: 29 Sep 04 - 11:12 AM Woodsie - when you, Dave K, and Richard Bridge get pissed at Knockholt - then there's plenty of talking crap :-) |

Subject: RE: People who talk crap at folk clubs From: fogie Date: 30 Sep 04 - 08:36 AM I fell out with an entire roomful of peole once when I told someone what I thought of their theory about bo-diddly's rhythm, which they supposed to be 7/4 or something, then told the same person what I thought of their instrument playing, and then various others who thought I must secretly admire this particular other because I'd been so forthright. The whole evening was a disaster, and I havent been back, but I'd stick to the principle of saying what you think, irrespective of consequences, if you think someone is talking crap! |
Subject: RE: People who talk crap at folk clubs From: Blissfully Ignorant Date: 30 Sep 04 - 11:24 PM Talking crap is an art! It must be practised and honed...and whisky helps a lot. A bottle of whisky is guaranteed to make anyone spout inane twaddle... |
