Male Irish singer - modern/folk

Who is the singer? What is the song?

Something along the lines of:

I wish I was in Kallefergus
If only for a night in Bali Grand
I'd swim over the deepest ocean
But the sea is wide
I can't get over
I wish I was now in Kilkenny
Black as ink
I'll sing no more
Till I'm a corpse

A most sincere thank you.

Gargoyle

The song is Carrickfergus. Many people have sung it, including Luke Kelly and Van Morrison.

Garg, you might be referring to the Van Morrison version that he did with The Chieftains. The CD was titled "Irish Heartbeat" and is widely available. It is a wonderful version of a much performed song.

All the best,

Mick

THANK YOU!!! I will scour the web with the title.

The male vocalist is a solo on a woman's album - deep baritone - there are no names or titles available.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

Whoa, that makes a difference, Garg. The album I referred to is not a women's album. Let me do some checking. But I do think that you would enjoy the one I listed.

Mick

I rather like the gargoyle version. Distilled Carrickfergus, brief and concentrated, and to the point, with a great last line.

Greetings,
maybe this communication has already met it's end, but I was recently introduced to this ballad, and would appreciate a response. I have roots in Carrickfergus, and am hoping to visit someday soon.

I should have a look at the links to other discussions here, if I were you (see top of the page). This one was mildly amusing at the time, but contains less information that almost any of the others (it's pretty much all been said already).

From your description, the singer you are looking for may be Cedric Smith. He sings the lead vocals on "Carrighfergus" on Loreena McKennitt's 1985 debut album "Elemental". He is the only male singer on the album although there is a STUNNING reading of a Robert Blake poem by Scottish Shakespearian actor Douglas Campbell.
I hope this is the recording you are looking for. It is easily my favorite interpretation of "Carrighfergus".
