Subject: Lyr Req: IrishSinger - Who?Kalilegus/Kilkenny/Ink From: GUEST,.gargoyle Date: 26 Sep 04 - 11:18 PM Male Irish singer - modern/folk
Who is the singer? What is the song?
Something along the lines of:
If only for a night in Bali Grand I'd swim over the deepest ocean But the sea is wide I can't get over I wish I was now in Kilkenny Black as ink I'll sing no more Till I'm a corpse
A most sincere thank you. Gargoyle |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: IrishSinger - Who?Kalilegus/Kilkenny/Ink From: Big Mick Date: 27 Sep 04 - 08:03 AM Garg, you might be referring to the Van Morrison version that he did with The Chieftains. The CD was titled "Irish Heartbeat" and is widely available. It is a wonderful version of a much performed song. All the best, Mick |

The male vocalist is a solo on a woman's album - deep baritone - there are no names or titles available.
Sincerely, |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: IrishSinger - Who?Kalilegus/Kilkenny/Ink From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 28 Sep 04 - 08:16 PM I rather like the gargoyle version. Distilled Carrickfergus, brief and concentrated, and to the point, with a great last line. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: IrishSinger - Who?Kalilegus/Kilkenny/Ink From: GUEST,Ron in California Date: 01 Jun 05 - 09:07 PM Greetings, maybe this communication has already met it's end, but I was recently introduced to this ballad, and would appreciate a response. I have roots in Carrickfergus, and am hoping to visit someday soon. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: IrishSinger - Who?Kalilegus/Kilkenny/Ink From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 01 Jun 05 - 09:19 PM I should have a look at the links to other discussions here, if I were you (see top of the page). This one was mildly amusing at the time, but contains less information that almost any of the others (it's pretty much all been said already). |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: IrishSinger - Who?Kalilegus/Kilkenny/Ink From: GUEST,Laurie Date: 23 Dec 05 - 12:19 PM From your description, the singer you are looking for may be Cedric Smith. He sings the lead vocals on "Carrighfergus" on Loreena McKennitt's 1985 debut album "Elemental". He is the only male singer on the album although there is a STUNNING reading of a Robert Blake poem by Scottish Shakespearian actor Douglas Campbell. I hope this is the recording you are looking for. It is easily my favorite interpretation of "Carrighfergus". |
