Can you post everything that you have? Where did your father hear it? What branch of whose service was he in? Stationed where?

Try a google of

Se fue a la guerra

I don't know if this will help. My Spanish is very poor--mostly just enough to recognize that the language IS Spanish. I will do some digging and get back if I find anything. Maybe a WWI song? Mecico?

This is a long shot, but many of the words you've quoted -- though not all of them together, as you've placed them -- appear in the Mexican song "Adelita." Any possibility that's it?

the title may be Se me fue mi amor or possibly se me fue mi encanto.... my pa in law says he heard it as a child... early 1940's... he lived in Kingsville,Texas he said his mother would sing this song with the radio. Not trying to be biased but this is definetly a song derived from Mexico. thank you ever so much for your help....

"Se Mi Fué Mi Amor" is a well-known Tejano song, written by Laura Cantu. There is a clip on the internet sung by Carmen y Laura. (click) The time frame is about right. Arhoolie cd/C343 Tejano Roots is one. Covered by Flaco Jimenez and others.

Se ----encanto, I don't believe is correct Spanish, but it may be dialect.

There's a clip of the Flaco Jimenez recording of "Se Me Fue Mi Amor" here (click). This (click) may be closer, though - a mention of Carmen y Laura singing "Se me fue mi amor a la guerra" ("My Love Went Away to the War") - which may be the same song as "Se me fue mi amor."
    Laura Hernandez Cantu 2 3
    Genres: Tejano
    Based in: Alice, TX
    Instrument: vocals
Birthplace: Kingsville Birthdate: 5/25/1926 Deathdate: 8/29/2004
Laura Hernandez Cantu and her sister Carmen Marroquin were reknown as some of the first female artists to record in the tejano music industry, releasing their first single "Se Me Fue Mi Amor" in 1944 for the Four Star record label. In the mid-1950's many tejano artists were claiming to be the first to include English songs in their reportoire, but in fact it was Carmen y Laura who set the pace in the late 40's with their recording of "Who's Sorry Now." The duet were also among the first Tejana singers to include blues, swing and boleros in their performances. Carmen y Laura have been honored and recognized by the Tejano Conjunto Hall of Fame in San Antonio, the Tejano Roots Hall of Fame in Alice, the Texas Music Museum Hall of Fame in Austin, and the Smithsonian Institution's Folkways Recordings.

i began my last thread with the wrong title. Does any one have the lyrics and tabs to this song. it was originally sung by Carmen y Laura in the 1940's and it was later released by Flaco Jimenez. Most times it is titled only Se me fue mi amor. any help would be greatly appriciated. thanx

There is a well known Mexican Mariachi song that goes:

Balaju se fue a la guerra
Y no me quiso llevar
Y no me quiso llevar
Balaju se vue a la guerra

There are several more verses and it is usually sung very fast. Could this be it?

According to allmusic, SE ME FUE MI AMOR was written by Felipe Valdés Leal. It has also been recorded by Los Alegres de Terán, Los Broncos de Reynosa, Las Jilguerillas, and Flaco Jimenez.

There is a 29-second sound clip of Carmen y Laura's recording on this page: Tejano Roots: The Women (Arhoolie) (or click to play).

There is a 51-second sound clip on this page: A University of Texas article about the same album (or click to play).

I found it on the Arhoolie CD, Tejano Roots: The Women. It has full lyrics and translations in the CD booklet.
-Joe Offer-

SE ME FUE MI AMOR

Se me tue mi amor
y no se ni adonde.
Se me fue a la guerra
sin decirme: "Vuelvo."

Se me fue mi amor,
se me fue mi encanto,
y no se hasta cuándo
volvere yo a verlo.

si no vuelvo a verlo,
que me dé la muerte,
que es mejor morir.

MY LOVE HAS GONE

My love has gone,
and I don't even know where.
He left to go to war
without telling me "I'll return."

My love has gone
and with him my illusion,
and I don't know when
I'll ever see him again.

I wish I were his shadow,
and have his fortune be mine,
to follow his path
and to share the same destiny.

I wish I could fly for him,
to where ever he may be,
fly like the birds across the sea,
to die along with him.

My love has gone, but not for ever,
for I know that one day
he shall return to me.

If I don't see him again,
I ask God
to grant me death,
for death would be a better fate.

Recorded late in 1945 by Carmen y Laura. In the space for the songwriter's name is (DAR) I don't know what that means.

The original recordings on the Ideal label were produced by Armando Marriquin in Alice, Texas (1946-1958) and by Paco Bettancourt in San Benito, Texas (1958-1970). The Ideal masters were purchased by Arhoolie in 1990.
This is one heckuva wonderful CD - the whole series looks great.

Mambru se fue a la guerra es mucho mas antigua que la segunda guerra mundial, trata sobre John Churchill, primer duque de Marlborough, y sus constantes idas a la guerra para contener los avances belicos de Luis XIV, originalmente es una cancion francessa.
