On August 28, over breakfast at our hotel coffee shop during the Ottawa Folk Festival, Arlo Guthrie and I talked about a bunch of things including the legacy and enduring relevancy of Woody Guthrie's work, the Jib Jab/Bush-Kerry parody of "This Land Is Your Land," the work of the Guthrie Center in the old Alice's Restaurant church, the emerging careers of his daughter and son-in-law, Sarah Lee Guthrie & Johnny Irion, the importance of Harold Leventhal and the new documentary film, Isn't This a Time! A Tribute Concert for Harold Leventhal.

I'll be playing that conversation, interspersed with a bunch of songs, at about 9:30 on Thursday's edition of Folk Roots/Folk Branches.

Folk Roots/Folk Branches is heard Thursday mornings from 9:00-11:30 (Eastern) on CKUT, 90.3 FM, in Montreal. The live stream, and archives (available for two months after broadcast), are available from the Folk Roots/Folk Branches web site.

That Arlo... He wanted to be in A MIGHTY WIND, but his old pal Chrostopher Guest told him they couldn't have any real people in the film.

So Arlo's going out and doing his own version for Harold Leventhal! Maybe he'll allow the Folksmen to appear singing Woody Guthrie.

Great show. I really enjoyed the rapport that you had with Arlo. He really opened up on the topics you asked him about. The songs were great. It was also nice to hear that there's a third generation of folk music Guthries coming up behind him. Quite the folk dynasty those Guthries.
