I am looking for a couple of songs to teach a child. She responds best to songs that tell a story. We're working on the Spinning Wheel right now. Does anyone have some more suggestions?

Adelle--

One of my favorites when I was a youngster was "The Fox," which is in the database. There's also "I bought me a cat" and "Grandfather's Clock," both of which were taught to me at a fairly age, and which I liked very much.

There's is a song that use to come on Jiggs Dinner when I was a kid called Peter Kagan and the Wind and it was a wonderful story. I still listen to it now. I only ever heard it done by Tommy Makem and Ian Clancy

Gordon Bok also does Peter Kagan and the Wind. Maid on the Shore might be fun, especially for a girl.

Depending on how old she is, there's a song called One Tin Soldier that's a great story. It even starts out "Listen Children to a story that was written long ago..." I found it on a couple of lyric sites, but can't remember which ones.

Hi,

Heard a bloke doing Peter Kagan and the wind while we sat outside his gypsy caravan. He played the uilleann pipes as he talked..... It was cold..... the wind was blowing fiercely........ wonderfully atmospheric.

Songs that tell stories? Depends on the age of the child and where you live to some extent. A very young child might prefer songs close to home.

Real little: The Fox Went To Town, Froggy Went A Courtin', There's A Big Ship Sailing(When my Rebekkah was 4 yrs. this was a favorite.)

Little Bigger: Alabama Jubilee, The Cherry Tree Carol, Bread and Fishes, Blue Tail Fly, The Cumberland Mountain Bear Chase.

10 and Older: Gordon Bok's Peter Kagan and the Wind or Saben The Woodfitter, Match Top Men( Favorite of my twin boys) Lock The Door Lariston, The Haughs O' Cromdale.

I could go on but this is the stuff my kids grew up onand they ain't too awfully bent.
