Subject: BS: Hull Fair From: Rt Revd Sir jOhn from Hull Date: 30 Sep 04 - 11:53 PM Hull Fair starts in 2 weeks, it's the biggest travelling fair in the world, and dates back hundreds of years, put "Hull Fair" in your searcher to see about it. |
Subject: RE: BS: Hull Fair From: Little Hawk Date: 01 Oct 04 - 02:07 AM I must have done something wrong. I got all kinds of stuff about hellfire. Mostly Christian sites of one sort or another, but also a couple about racing and one that belongs to a band. Will any of that be happening at the Hull Fair? |
Subject: RE: BS: Hull Fair From: Red and White Rabbit Date: 01 Oct 04 - 02:18 AM fond memories of childhood - hellfire and racing at 'ull fair - werent much chritianity as I remember!! lots of candy floss dodgems waltzers and money spent - haven't been for years |
Subject: RE: BS: Hull Fair From: Rt Revd Sir jOhn from Hull Date: 01 Oct 04 - 02:24 AM little gawk= maybe yoiu speleed it wrong? |
Subject: RE: BS: Hull Fair From: darkriver Date: 01 Oct 04 - 03:19 AM ah Sir jOhn, I love that "Little Gawk"! I did as you suggested, plugged "Hull Fair" into Google, and the first hit listed was from (of all things) the Mathematical Association Humberside Branch, with its proud page about Hull Fair: Hull Fair is one of Europe's largest travelling fun fairs. It gathers for 8 days in October to offer a huge combination of carousels, fairground stalls, rides and side shows. Choose from:- Facts and Figures [link] Pictures and Questions [link] Being a facts & figures kind of guy, I clicked that link, but what did I find? A table with nothing in it. How informative.... Going to the Pictures and Queestions link, I found a pic of a ride called a helter-skelter (I'm from California, so I dunno wot dat is). Next to the picture was the following: £1 per ride. 1. Estimate the height of the ride. (Hint: Use the person collecting money.) 2. Draw a plan view of the helter-skelter. 3. How many times do you go round the helter-skelter as you go down? 4. If it takes a child about 4 seconds to go from top to bottom, how much does it cost per second on the ride? 5. If the slide was made straight, about how long would it be? 6. (Advanced) Estimate the child's speed as the bottom is reached. After that, my head started to hurt. I hope the Hull Fair is more fun than that. Regards, doug |

Subject: RE: BS: Hull Fair From: Sttaw Legend Date: 01 Oct 04 - 03:37 AM How is jim jOhn I'm just going to the gym |
Subject: RE: BS: Hull Fair From: Sttaw Legend Date: 01 Oct 04 - 03:41 AM I'll tell people at the gym I know a spider that can read. |
Subject: RE: BS: Hull Fair From: Little Hawk Date: 01 Oct 04 - 11:48 AM We should take up a collection for Jim the spider, don't you think? After all, he has to live with jOhn, and that can't be easy. |
Subject: RE: BS: Hull Fair From: Sooz Date: 02 Oct 04 - 11:16 AM We were always told that the Nottingham Goose Fair (next weekend) was the biggest. But then, Robin Hood was ours also and not an airport near Doncaster! |
Subject: RE: BS: Hull Fair From: SINSULL Date: 02 Oct 04 - 12:23 PM Embarrassing but true: I too have a "pet" spider. A huge brown spider very cleverly built her web over my mailbox and under the porch light last June. When I turn on the porch light, she feasts on assorted flying things. I was afraid I had lost her to a wind/rain storm a few weeks ago but she came back, repaired her damaged web, and went on with life. Winter is coming. I imagine she will die but hopefully one of the fifty million babies that hatched out of her nest (that was a rude surprise in and on the mailbox) will choose this same spot next year. I haven't named her. She is a bit too dignified to be written off as a pet. |
Subject: RE: BS: Hull Fair From: selby Date: 03 Oct 04 - 10:29 AM What date does ull fair start |
Subject: RE: BS: Hull Fair From: Rt Revd Sir jOhn from Hull Date: 04 Oct 04 - 10:03 AM it starts on friday. |
Subject: RE: BS: Hull Fair From: Dave Bryant Date: 04 Oct 04 - 10:51 AM I think that 'Ull is very unfair ! |
Subject: RE: BS: Hull Fair From: s&r Date: 05 Oct 04 - 04:22 AM Sooz - I lived in Nottingham a long while ago, and it was always (sadly) admitted that Hull was bigger. If I remember correctly all the rides etc from Nottingham went to Hull, and were joined en route by several small fairs. But ours was a Goose Fair, which we kids knew was somehow better. Stu |
Subject: RE: BS: Hull Fair From: Mr Red Date: 05 Oct 04 - 08:06 AM been there done that, bigger but apart from the largest rides appearing several times and the advent of the flight simulator type of "experiences" I didn't see much I haven't seen at the Tewkesbury Mop Fair or Chipping Sodbury or St Giles Fair in Oxford. Just more of it. I didn't see two caravans sporting the real Gyspy Rose Lee telling anybody's fortune, Oxford, at least had two Rose Lea's at opposite ends of the street. |

Don't be fooled - its one caravan SIX Gypsy Rose Lea's, they work shifts. |
Subject: RE: BS: Hull Fair From: Sttaw Legend Date: 05 Oct 04 - 10:02 AM Apparently Kerry is coming over from America to do the official opening of Hull Fair with Sir jOhn. |

Subject: RE: BS: Hull Fair From: brid widder Date: 06 Oct 04 - 05:38 PM I think Nottingham Goose Fair is on a bigger field but Hull Fair has more attractions... so is bigger.... grass doesn't count! |
Subject: RE: BS: Hull Fair From: Mr Red Date: 07 Oct 04 - 07:45 AM but do they have more geese on that field? Hull Fair is more like a car park. I seem to remeber a lot of tarmac. |
Subject: RE: BS: Hull Fair From: Dave the Gnome Date: 07 Oct 04 - 08:53 AM No it isn't... |
Subject: RE: BS: Hull Fair From: Dave the Gnome Date: 07 Oct 04 - 08:53 AM ... fair that is :D |

Subject: RE: BS: Hull Fair From: GUEST,Sooz (at work) Date: 08 Oct 04 - 08:54 AM The Goose Fair started yesterday. As we now live midway between Nottingham and 'ull we've decided to be spruculously fair and not go to either! |
Subject: RE: BS: Hull Fair From: GUEST,JvR Date: 09 Oct 04 - 04:14 AM All nice chit chat but I have been looking for some basic information which I can not seem to find. Info like when, where, what about parking, how late does it open/close. all the sites give info on history and thelink mentioned earlier is for some kind of project |
Subject: RE: BS: Hull Fair From: Les from Hull Date: 09 Oct 04 - 11:30 AM It's at the Walton Street Fairground on the west side of Hull. It opens up slowly from about 12noon until about midnight. Parking may be a bit of a problem, you can't park in the streets nearby. But you should be able to park within a few streets. As far as I know it's all this next week. |
Subject: RE: BS: Hull Fair From: Mr Red Date: 09 Oct 04 - 12:15 PM when I went I walked about 10 minutes from the car, across the level crossing and there it was. You can't miss it - follow everone else. Now when is Tavistock Goosey fair? |
