Subject: RE: BS: Obit: Rodney Dangerfield, 5 Oct 2004 From: Gern Date: 06 Oct 04 - 10:06 AM Nobody made me laugh more than Rodney. My favorite Joke: "My old man said if you don't stop doing that, you'll go blind. I said, "Dad, I'm over here." |
Subject: Obit: Rodney Dangerfield From: kendall Date: 06 Oct 04 - 12:23 PM He was 82, and he got a lot more respect than he realized. I loved his one liners and will miss him very much.

Subject: BS: No respect! From: PoppaGator Date: 06 Oct 04 - 12:52 PM One of my favorite performers, Rodney Dangerfield, passed away yesterday. Sometime within the past 15-20 minutes, someone created a thread "Obit: Rodney Dangerfield," and posted it in the upper/main/music section. By the time I spotted it, there were 3 messages. When I selected the thread title to read through it, I got this message: THREAD DELETED The man is dead, and STILL gets disrespected! How appropriate... (You know, he was a bottle-fed baby; his mother liked him as a friend.) PoppaGator, the thread was technically 'deleted' because the posts were transferred into the earlier Obit thread. --JoeClone |
Subject: RE: BS: Obit: Rodney Dangerfield, 5 Oct 2004 From: Jeri Date: 06 Oct 04 - 01:16 PM I remember once going out to a late meal after a session. We waited for the food, and two long-time friends did Rodney Dangerfield gags until it came, and for a while afer, if I remember correctly. I DO think he was funny. I always thought the 'I don't get any respect' thing was boring by itself, but it was a charicature of his comedy. Back in the days when HBO was new, I remember I watched his un-censored routine, and I laughed very, very hard. |
Subject: RE: BS: Obit: Rodney Dangerfield, 5 Oct 2004 From: kendall Date: 06 Oct 04 - 01:28 PM He made me laugh and that aint easy. I still use one of his best, "When I was a kid, my father took me aside and left me there." |
Subject: RE: BS: Obit: Rodney Dangerfield, 5 Oct 2004 From: freightdawg Date: 06 Oct 04 - 01:44 PM Red Skelton, Jack Benny, Bob Hope, Uncle Miltie,... One by one all the comedians are dying. In their place all we get is talking garbage cans that haven't learned a new joke since being potty trained. Dangerfield's schtick was to get us to laugh at ourselves, even though we thought we were laughing at him. Who, at some point in their life, has not had one of those "Rodney Dangerfield" moments when we feel like we are the only one at a wedding dressed like we were going to a clam bake. I just read his obit in the paper. He was one hard working person to make his comedy connect. Freightdawg |
Subject: RE: BS: Obit: Rodney Dangerfield, 5 Oct 2004 From: PoppaGator Date: 06 Oct 04 - 02:31 PM Rodney was in some pretty low-brow movies in recent years. He was much funnier doing his stand-up routine than he was in those films. Even as censored for broadcast TV, his set was pretty outrageous; on uncensored pay-cable HBO, he was even better. He was also noted for helping young up-and-coming comics in his dual role as club-owner ("Dangerfield's" in NYC) and performer. Since I have a 25-year-old son trying to make his mark on the New York comedy scene, I am especially aware of this aspect of Rodney's history. Sorry, JoeClone(s), that I jumped to conclusions. I quickly realized what had happened (consolidation of multiple threads down here in "BS") very shortly after posting my rant. |
Subject: RE: BS: Obit: Rodney Dangerfield, 5 Oct 2004 From: Bill Hahn//\\ Date: 06 Oct 04 - 06:55 PM I read his obit in the Times today---laughed out loud at some of the quotes. "I was so ugly when I was born the doctor slapped my mother" How the disrespect shtick came to be was fascinating--having to do with The Godfather film. Now---how one ( a club owner) can come up with a name like Rodney Dangerfield for Jacob Cohen is beyond me---such an unusual name. One of the last of the one line stand ups---like Henny Youngman---and funny as hell. Never a fan of the films---but surely one of his routines---sadly missed. Another era gone and the one line "shock" comics are in ascendance. Bill Hahn |
