Brucie:

Unlike Bush, Dan Rather made an effort, if not sufficient, to find out whether the documents were valid or were not.

The documents were not.

Oddly enough, the situation which the documents were reporting was correctly described -- the ground truth according to witnesses at the time was that Bush was using pull to get an easy tour. Them's the facts. Condemn Rather all you like. But remember what the flap is really about -- not an honest mistake, but a conscious deception by a son of privelege.

Bush did lie about WMD and in doing so, he may have been the innocent tool of warmongers, rather than a vicious liar, as he first seemed to be. If so, I can forgive him for his stupidity. But I cannot support the idea he is qualified in any way to sit inthe Oval Office. He's either a patsy and too dumb to run a county, or he's as dark of soul as Darth Vader. Your call.

Rather just stepped in shit through his appetite for a story. He deserves far more of a break than Bush does, with he blood of Mesopotamia in his hands.

A

Well, at least UJ took the trouble to put his sentiments into verse.

I also agree that Dan's producer really got burned on this story, which seemed reasonable enough according to what the documents said. I applaud Dan for accepting responsibility and apologizing.

However, I don't think Rather's actions are anywhere as reprehensible as say accepting forged documents from Niger as evidence for proof that Saddam was attempting to purchase uranium ore from Niger for his nuclear weapons program and having Colin Powell say that at the UN, but maybe I should put that case in verse as well. So far we have had no apology from either Powell or the Bush administration on that whopper.

I was just pointing out that good ol' Unc was the first person to use the 'L' word, not me.

Dear UJ, "So, jeri - Komrade Dan was acting on good faith on faulty information, but Pres. Bush "Lied" about the WMD in Iraq, eh?"

What makes you think Bush lied?

Tarheel I admire that as a newcomer to mudcat you exposed an arrogant S,O,B as Dan Rather for what he really is and I cannont believe CBS would pay him Millions of dollars every year to spout and promote the Democratic party for 20 minutes of every 1/2 hour he on the evening news instead the news.I've come to the conclusion mudcat is made up mostly of Democrats and they are the only ones who should have a voice.I myself am a Democrat and have been all my life but this year they make me sick and disgusted.If this same ditty was written about president Bush There would be at least 50 replies telling you how right you are.LOuie Roy

Tarheel; I've been in and out for several years, but unless things have changed a whole lot here, if you are as I am, a "Conservative Folkie" (almost an oxymoron, isn't it?), don't be surprised if you get to feeling like a pork-chop at a Bahr Mitzvah.

Now i've come to know some of these Folks - even jammed with a few - and love 'em dearly; but when it comes to our "politics", well; WHOOOOOIE Hoss!

Did you write that "Ballad" or pick it up on the internet somewhere?

If you are new to the 'Cat and don't yet appreciate the majority of ideological sentiment in here, you will pretty soon since posting that terribly non-politically correct "ballad".

If not, then I salute and commend your sheer audacity!

Ol' Uncle Jaque

You know, I think we've found a subject that both liberals and conservatives can agree on: The Dan Rather is about three cards short of a deck.

Cute.

So, jeri - Komrade Dan was acting on good faith on faulty information, but Pres. Bush "Lied" about the WMD in Iraq, eh?

I see...

Just like this esteemed Propaganda Minister for the DNC called the 2K election in Florida for Gore an hour before the polls closed in the panhandle, so that Republicans out there would just give up and not bother to vote.

Isn't he that same one that currently laments as to how we are supposed to be "Losing" the War against Terrorism, all the Iraqi Citizens hate our American guts, and that it's a hopeless "quagmire" when returning GI's tell a completely different tale of what gains and accomplishments are being achieved over there on a regular basis?

It seems that Mr. Rather was hoping so intesely for some shred of incriminating "evidence" with which to skewer his and the Left's most hated and despised President, that he listened only to those shills who supported his pretense of the Texas NG "documents" legitimacy, while ignoring any who questioned it. And apparently a few did at the time.

You may continue to regard Mr. Rather and his Komrades in the lamestream popular Press / Media as objective "Journalists", but I have long considered them to be no more than willing accomplices for the American Socialist Party (which has been, for about the last 30 years or so, masquerading as the "Democratic" Party), doing everything in their power to abuse the public trust they have enjoyed as "News" wonks and decieve the American Public in order to advance their chosen political agenda.

But alas; now their monopoly on public information has been broken; the informational blockade is breached!

Now we have "talk radio", the Internet, the Pajammarazzi and the Blogosphere making end runs around these bastions of political correctness and "Rightthink" (or more aptly, "Leftthink") and we are actually getting to the misinformed, miseducated, and hithertofor brainwashed masses in America.

And lo and behold; Komrade Dans' lies, forgeries and deciet are thrown back into his arrogant, phony face for a change; CBS's ratings are in the tank (septic, that is) and the ratings of the other big leftist networks are following suit.

Hey Dan; hate to break it to ya, Komrade; but AMERICA is WAKING UP!

Despite G. Bush's questionable record in the domestic agenda and lackluster performance in the last debate, his numbers seem to keep inching up past and beyond Kerry's in many "battleground" States - Including traditionaly liberal / Democrat controled Maine!

Demosocialisticrat operatives, "Protesters" (AKA "Rent-A-Mob") Usefull Idiots (one of Marx's pet terms for 'em) and Union thugs have been reduced to acts of desperation of late, stealing or destroying Bush/Cheney signs at night, and recently making coordinated attacks on several GOP Campaign HQ around the Country where computers and data were stolen or destroyed, windows shot out, and Volunteers and Campaign Workers intimidated and in some instances assaulted.

Citizens with the audacity to display a Bush/Cheney sign on their lawns are having their property vandalized, as are vehicles bearing a Bush bumper sticker.

Many Republicans have taken to putting their political "stickers" on magnetic strips that can be pulled off and hidden inside the car whenever they have to leave their vehicle, lest they return to find it "keyed", the tires flat, or otherwise vandalized.

   How many Kerry Supporters do you know that have to do that?

Bush Supporters in the South where apparently some of these attacks have been particularly nasty are opining that if these thugs keep it up, they are going to find out in short order what the Second Ammendment is all about.

Great; just what we need; another bloody Civil War!

So if you want to keep trusting Dan Rather et al, by all means go right ahead and enjoy the Jonestown Kool-Aide; Guzzle away.

But I would put more faith in a Gypsy Fortune Teller to give me the actual "News", frankly.

Ahhhh; it's so good to be back on the ol' Mudcat!

Did ye miss me?   };^{)~

Just a little comment
I think I'd like to add
Dan believed in evidence that turned out to be bad
Coulda put the blame on sources
But that's not the way it went
It's only someone else's fault if you're the President

No WMDs? A mistake? What kinda message would THAT send!?

BALLAD OF DAN RATHER
(Sung to the tune from the Beverly Hillbillies)

Come and listen to my story
'bout a man named Dan,
The documents were fake and he didn't give a damn;
He put 'em on the air,
an' he thought he'd done the job,
But up from the web come a howlin' mob.

Blogs, that is. Web logs. Checkin' facts.

Well, the first thing you know
ol' Dan's a-runnin' fast;
Made a false report an' it bit him in the ass;
He said 'dog-gonnit,
I done thought I'd get away!'
But it turned out to be his a-reckonin' day.

Busted, that is. Red-faced. Mud in the eye.

Well, now it's time to say
goodbye to Dan and all his men;
And they would like to shoot you folks for turnin' them in;
You're all invited back next week
to watch the Evening News,
And see which correspondent's picked to fill Dan's empty shoes.

Y'all come back, now, hear? -
