Subject: RE: Lincolnshire competition finals draw From: Big Al Whittle Date: 06 Oct 04 - 03:18 PM Anybody got any idea of what time it kicks off, if there is a p.a., photocall or anything else that might be of interest - when do we have to get there? A nearby cafe or pub where we can get a sandwich and cuppa after the drive - prior to the show? Very best wishes to other mudcatters involved - Georgian Silver and Sooz. Lets hope its a really nice fun evening. |

Subject: RE: Lincolnshire competition finals draw From: Big Al Whittle Date: 13 Oct 04 - 08:06 PM Its all new stuff to me. i just hope we all have a great time. New experience for me - I've been thinking - I really can't recollect singing in a theatre before. I've always sung in pubs, clubs. once on television - I mimed. once I also mimed in front of an audience when they played my record on radio luxemburg, and once I sang at wembley conference centre. a few times on paul mackenzie's show on radio derby. one time I sang for paul from the knickers counter in marks and spencer in buxton, but never a theatre before. Fun! could be a new thread there - weird places wot you have sung. |
Subject: RE: Lincolnshire competition finals draw From: Sooz Date: 14 Oct 04 - 10:50 AM Watch out for the dressing rooms Al. They used to be the cells! |
Subject: RE: Lincolnshire competition finals draw From: Georgiansilver Date: 15 Oct 04 - 12:28 AM Congratulations Weelittledrummer on getting the "Showmans" prize for taking your song and lifting it by your performance. Well done Big Al!!!!! Best wishes. Mike |
Subject: RE: Lincolnshire competition finals draw From: Big Al Whittle Date: 15 Oct 04 - 01:23 AM Thanks Mike. Sooz said you would be quick to post. As you said I didn't feel I was working with the strongest of material, but I did my best. it was an honour to have been selected as a finalist, and I wanted to make as good a job of it as I could. having said that I was surprised to win as the standard of musicianship was very high. To be honest I got a bit depressed, every time I poked my head out of the bar, there was somebody else sounding brilliant on stage. I thought it was nice that the guy who won the best song category was talking about Lincolnshire people in the present when so many of us were talking about the past. In a way that's how folksong should be. The songs of the industrial revolution and Woody Guthrie's many causes - many have been long forgotten, but they were red hot at the time. and the audience's gleeful recognition of the song about the councillor - I had never heard of, told its own story. I know you must feel a little disappointed, but if your work is attracting the attention of musicians of the calibre of Sooz and her husband, I feel sure the breakthrough and recognition that you are waiting for will not be too long in coming. all the very best and thanks to mudcat for telling me about this interesting competition. alan |
Subject: RE: Lincolnshire competition finals draw From: Sooz Date: 15 Oct 04 - 03:15 AM What a night! Well done Al! The winning song was by Paul Dickinson and told the story of County Councillor Jim Speechleys demise and imprisonment for being a really naughty boy. Not sure if they will be able to broadcast it though, especially if he wins his appeal! You are right, Al - nice to see a topical song win (and a funny one) Hope you aren't too diappointed, Mike - we'll give yours another blast at the Festival Folk Club tonight! |
Subject: RE: Lincolnshire competition finals draw From: GUEST,Mark Date: 15 Oct 04 - 06:10 PM Well, while you were making your late-night postings, I was still on the road, but I made it home eventually (about 3.30). Apart from the driving it was a great night, so many good songs and performers - well done everyone - and such a friendly bunch of people. Sorry I couldn't stay around for a post-show chat, but it seemed like I should get going... Hope the festival goes well this weekend, I'll have to get up that way again some time and see a bit more of the Lincolnshire music scene, which certainly seems to be thriving. All the best, Mark. |
Subject: RE: Lincolnshire competition finals draw From: Sooz Date: 19 Oct 04 - 04:16 AM To read all about it and hear the winning song click here Mark - it was a pleasure to meet you, please join up and keep in touch. The festival was brilliant by the way!. |

I'm sorry you didn't make it through Sooz......funny old world, etc. I'll bring my dandelion and burdock hipflask to cheer you up. al |
Subject: RE: Lincolnshire competition finals draw From: GUEST,GS in sunny Devon (It's raining) Date: 29 Sep 05 - 04:37 AM Thank you Sooz and congrats again Al. An honour to be in the final again but sad that Phil has not got in with his song, which I thought was at least as good if not better than mine. Thanks to Jane for performing it so well.....what a voice! and what a new skill on the keyboard. Best wishes all, see you there. Mike |
Subject: RE: Lincolnshire competition finals draw From: Rasener Date: 29 Sep 05 - 05:06 AM Yes Well done Big Al and GS. I am looking forward to being a judge for the first time. Waiting for the lyrics from Tom Lane. Look forward to seing you all. Cheers Les |
Subject: RE: Lincolnshire competition finals draw From: the fence Date: 29 Sep 05 - 05:53 AM No Sooz we are not!!! We will be supporting the Gainsborough contingent. Congratulations to all who made the final. Was hoping to get in for free of course but will have to spend hard earned on a bleedin ticket now hahaha |
Subject: RE: Lincolnshire competition finals draw From: Sooz Date: 29 Sep 05 - 06:02 AM That is the real downside, fence! Al, how did you know my favourite tipple? |
Subject: RE: Lincolnshire competition finals draw From: Big Al Whittle Date: 29 Sep 05 - 07:50 AM shouldn't worry about the lyrics Les, they're getting rewritten every hour on the hour - gawd knows what I sent off - that was days ago. as for the d&b, Sooz - we capricorns have mystic powers. however they don't extend to knowing where my keys are, or knowing who else is on the bill of fayre at Spilsby, or which trap I'm coming out of. |
Subject: RE: Lincolnshire competition finals draw From: Sooz Date: 29 Sep 05 - 08:14 AM Sorry, Al - didn't get chance to write everyone down let alone the order. Lots of the usual suspects though! |
Subject: RE: Lincolnshire competition finals draw From: Rasener Date: 29 Sep 05 - 02:26 PM Trust you Al. It will probably end up being a revision of "Drown em in the bath" LOL :-) |
Subject: RE: Lincolnshire competition finals draw From: Big Al Whittle Date: 29 Sep 05 - 06:12 PM I have written other songs Les, but nothing else seems to piss off the audience quite so quickly. Find a losing formula, and stick to it! that's been my guiding principle.......... |
Subject: RE: Lincolnshire competition finals draw From: Georgiansilver Date: 30 Sep 05 - 11:22 AM But at least you haven't drowned yourself in the bath yet eh? Best wishes Al, Mike. |
Subject: RE: Lincolnshire competition finals draw From: Rasener Date: 01 Oct 05 - 06:55 AM Got the lyrics this morning of all the songs. Ah well I have something to occupy myself, whilst feeling sorry for myself (ill). |
Subject: RE: Lincolnshire competition finals draw From: Rasener Date: 01 Oct 05 - 04:19 PM Here is the list of Finalists. Do not know if it is the running order. Song - Writer - Performer Haxey Wood - Angela White - Angela White This Market Town - Wendy Ellis - Wendy Ellis Guymer's Warning - Hannah & David Hurdman - Doonvarna Gatehouse 49 - Martgaret Richer - Margaret Richer Footsteps Of The Legions - Mark Ashworth - Mark Ashworth Youll Never Feel Lost In Boston - Big Al Whittle - Big Al Whittle Ross Trawlers Return - Michael Hill - Jane Kitchen Cleethorpes Crazy Days G Kelly/A Kelly/J Lambert/J Vernau - June Vernau The Days We Went A Drinking At The Show - Jim Hancock - Geoff Convery & Keith Brown Inbred And Proud - Glyn Pout/Trevor Glen/Mick Brommell - Billinger Ruffs Hope there isn't any errors - copied from my list. Don't forget to bring the trophy back Al :-) |
Subject: RE: Lincolnshire competition finals draw From: Big Al Whittle Date: 01 Oct 05 - 04:58 PM ah yes the trophy - well it was like this....my brother in law needed something to hold his caravan up when he changed the wheel..... we all told him it wasn't strong enough. however don't worry! a little super glue and a couple of masonry nails, and actually some people do say it looks better than before, and of course, the pieces can now be more easily transported in an attractive Sainsbury's carrier 'bag for life', which I have donated. |
Subject: RE: Lincolnshire competition finals draw From: Rasener Date: 01 Oct 05 - 05:23 PM LOL I like it :-) |
Subject: RE: Lincolnshire competition finals draw From: GUEST,GS Date: 02 Oct 05 - 02:41 PM My song is on third...... |
Subject: RE: Lincolnshire competition finals draw From: Rasener Date: 03 Oct 05 - 11:14 AM See you there GS. Anybody getting nervous yet ? |
Subject: RE: Lincolnshire competition finals draw From: Rasener Date: 04 Oct 05 - 01:13 AM 3 to go |
Subject: RE: Lincolnshire competition finals draw From: Georgiansilver Date: 04 Oct 05 - 02:55 AM Should I admit to feeling a little nervous to one of the judges? mmmmmmm Yes O.K Les I am feeling a little nervous! Best wishes, Mike. |
Subject: RE: Lincolnshire competition finals draw From: Rasener Date: 04 Oct 05 - 05:16 AM You wouldn't be normal if you weren't GS. Sit near to the toilets :-) |
Subject: RE: Lincolnshire competition finals draw From: GUEST,BusyBee Paul at work Date: 04 Oct 05 - 11:35 AM Sorry I won't be there this year, good luck GS!. Don't know why you're getting so nervous, wonder how Jane is feeling! See you all soon, BBP |
Subject: RE: Lincolnshire competition finals draw From: Georgiansilver Date: 05 Oct 05 - 04:05 AM Thanks BBP....certainly more nervous this year than I was last. Best wishes, Mike. |
Subject: RE: Lincolnshire competition finals draw From: Big Al Whittle Date: 05 Oct 05 - 08:57 AM theres nothing rational about attacks of nerves - they come unbidden, and often unexpectedly. i think its just a nice thing to be invited like this. try and enjoy it. Apparently Eric Bogle entered The Band Played Waltzing Matilda for a song competition one time early in his career - and came second. Look at it this way Mike, what are we two going to do if they boo our songs off the stage and shout rubbish! Get off! Give up song writing.....? I don't think so. |
Subject: RE: Lincolnshire competition finals draw From: Georgiansilver Date: 05 Oct 05 - 12:10 PM Perhaps it wasn't nerves after all just lack of sleep I suspect. I feel fine now. Best wishes, Mike. |
Subject: RE: Lincolnshire competition finals draw From: Rasener Date: 06 Oct 05 - 02:43 AM Tonights the night. |
Subject: RE: Lincolnshire competition finals draw From: Big Al Whittle Date: 06 Oct 05 - 08:23 PM congratulations to Georgian Silver on coming second. Next year I'm sure you'll improve on that position all the best al and den |
Subject: RE: Lincolnshire competition finals draw From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 06 Oct 05 - 10:15 PM So, who were the winners, and what are their real names? I think we should be told. |
Subject: RE: Lincolnshire competition finals draw From: GUEST,lisa Date: 06 Oct 05 - 10:27 PM Hate to cut in but can anyone help me on how to locate a song knowing only general info and possibly one lyric from it? having a heck of a time trying to pin it down. |
Subject: RE: Lincolnshire competition finals draw From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 06 Oct 05 - 11:14 PM That depends on the song, what you know about it, and what you are prepared to tell the people you want to help you. Does it have anything to do with this year's Lincolnshire competition? If it does, then you are in the right place. If it doesn't, then you aren't. Please use the onsite search engine ("Lyrics and Knowledge Search"; it's at the top of every page here) to look for a phrase from the lyric as you remember it; don't forget to try alternative spellings and/or phrasings. If you draw a complete blank, start a new thread to ask your question. Be sure to include as much information as you can, so that people can help you most effectively. Now, can we return to the competition, please? It really would be useful to know what happened and to whom, without having to struggle with all these confusing pseudonyms. |
Subject: RE: Lincolnshire competition finals draw From: Rasener Date: 07 Oct 05 - 04:38 AM The result was as follows Song - Writer - Performer 1. The Days We Went A Drinking At The Show - Jim Hancock - Geoff Convery & Keith Brown 2. Ross Trawlers Return - Michael Hill - Jane Kitchen 3. Inbred And Proud - Glyn Pout/Trevor Glen/Mick Brommell - Billinger Ruffs |
Subject: RE: Lincolnshire competition finals draw From: Big Al Whittle Date: 07 Oct 05 - 04:47 AM The day we went drinking at the show -song about getting pissed at an agricultural event won - sort hey up, didn't we sup some sort of thing. Inbred and proud won the performance trophy...quite a witty take on kissing cousins in Lincolnshire villages. very deftly executed. It reminded me of a teaching practice i did back in 60's in a Linconshire village9which will remain unnamed). the history lecturer at college had told us to ask us to show the kids the schools log from the last century - to show them the history of their own environment. the headmaster said no bloody way - apparently all the village was screwing each other at that point, and EVERYBODY was related to each other. My song got nowhere but you can hear it if you log onto my site. I'm really proud of it and I've got it playing immediately you log on! http://bigalwhittle.co.uk/ |
Subject: RE: Lincolnshire competition finals draw From: the fence Date: 07 Oct 05 - 08:21 AM Congratulations to Mike and Jane, excellent!!! |
Subject: RE: Lincolnshire competition finals draw From: Sooz Date: 07 Oct 05 - 08:21 AM What an interesting experience to be in the audience for a change (my song didn't get to the final). Mike and I missed the warmth and cameraderie we have experienced back stage as competitors and I empathised with the drooping shoulders and general knackeredness of the judges! The winning song had a suggestion of Keith Marsden about it. The competition began after he died, but he would probably have written a song along these lines had he been around. I thought it was the right choice although we were rooting for Mike and Jane all the way. Work is an extra pain after such a late night..........will try to perk up in time for Market Rasen Folk Club tonight. |
Subject: RE: Lincolnshire competition finals draw From: Travelling Audience Date: 07 Oct 05 - 09:01 AM Change of plan....we've now got to come to MR to support Jane singing Mike's prize winning song. |
Subject: RE: Lincolnshire competition finals draw From: Rasener Date: 07 Oct 05 - 10:27 AM Good on yer TA. Look forward to seing you. You'll perk up Sooz. Make sure Mike has lots of funny jokes. I haven't had time to research :-) |
Subject: RE: Lincolnshire competition finals draw From: Big Al Whittle Date: 07 Oct 05 - 10:32 AM felt that there should have been a bit of encouragement for the youngsters. you couldn't argue with the decision - and yet I tend to think there should be brownie points for kids for not being soccer hooligans - well for taking a night off being one! |
Subject: RE: Lincolnshire competition finals draw From: Big Al Whittle Date: 07 Oct 05 - 11:37 AM further thought what the judges should have done is make up a best newcomers prize on the spot. you see what the kids wanted was a bit of kudos, abit of something to put on their website - and what would it have cost anybody? as it is they might go away and say, oh we tried that and it was a bit of a closed shop - all old stuff. and if they say that to their fellow young musicians, it might dissuade other young people from having a go, and that would be a pity. |
Subject: RE: Lincolnshire competition finals draw From: Rasener Date: 07 Oct 05 - 12:12 PM Al - our remit was to choose what we thought were the top 3. Anything else would have to be agreed up front. However, it is worth putting forward for next year. There is a young musicians competition for Lincolnshire, and that is the competition they should enter. |
Subject: RE: Lincolnshire competition finals draw From: Georgiansilver Date: 07 Oct 05 - 07:42 PM Thanks for the congrats to Jane and myself. Janes presentation of the song is so good...what a voice she has. Hopefully she will play it again at the next Gainsborough Folk Club meeting on the ...the....the...is it the 14th? anyway next Friday at the Melrose Sports and Social Club. After that at the Gainsborough Folk Festival....which is from 21st to 23rd of Oct...Book your tickets now!!!!!! Best wishes, Mike. |
Subject: RE: Lincolnshire competition finals draw From: Big Al Whittle Date: 08 Oct 05 - 05:27 AM make up the rules as you go along Les! We're old! And no ones watching! And if they were, who cares! |
Subject: RE: Lincolnshire competition finals draw From: Rasener Date: 08 Oct 05 - 06:46 AM There is a chairperson Al and we are led by that person concerniong the rules. |
Subject: RE: Lincolnshire competition finals draw From: Big Al Whittle Date: 08 Oct 05 - 07:03 AM if he's a real Christian, he'll forgive you! |
Subject: RE: Lincolnshire competition finals draw From: Rasener Date: 08 Oct 05 - 07:09 AM LOL and me an atheist :-) |
Subject: RE: Lincolnshire competition finals draw From: GUEST,Offbeat Dave Date: 08 Oct 05 - 03:25 PM I hope I'm right in thinking that I'm one of the 'kids' (Doonvarna). Thursday was the third time in four years we've been in the final! We didn't get in last year. The first time we entered (2002) we were actually placed third! When the competition comes around, we stick to our beliefs about writing folk songs and stick to our own folk-rock style. If we get into the finals we're delighted (and a little surprised)! We never go into the finals expecting anything other than to enjoy ourselves playing music as our style is so different to anything else on the night and probably that is entered. You're right though, it does give us something to put on our website! (www.doonvarna.co.uk - midway through overhaul at present) If you're interested check out the website for our four entries to date: 2002 Slash Hollow, 2003 Tom Otter, 2004 Splintered Wood and Iron (non-finalist) and 2005 Guymer's Warning. Thanks for all the kind comments, especially the 'kids' reference! |
Subject: RE: Lincolnshire competition finals draw From: the fence Date: 08 Oct 05 - 03:57 PM Doonvarna, thoroughly enjoyed your performance both the warm up and the song entered, as you so rightly say 'stick to our beliefs' it should only ever be that way otherwise it's pandering to others. All the finalists deserved to be there and the diversity of style and content was great. If they had all been of the same ilk there would have been no point in the competition at all. Excellent performance many thanks for a great evening to all the artists!!! |
Subject: RE: Lincolnshire competition finals draw From: Georgiansilver Date: 08 Oct 05 - 04:14 PM Doonvarna...you did get a mention and thoroughly deserved. Your Folk/Rock style impressed me and so did that gorgeous flautist you have playing with you. My entry came second and I'm still not sure if your entry was better than mine........At the end of the day it is up to the judges to decide and they have a difficult job! Your work is good so keep it up and see you next year. Best wishes, Mike. Author of "Ross Trawlers return" which came second to a deserving first. |
