Thanks for the info, Bill I definitely want to hear it. She had such a beautiful voice and wrote such great songs. Sadly, I only discovered her music a few years ago. But what a treasure.

Quite right---it is airing on Oct. 10 and you can listen on the web. The more definitive commemoration will be in Jan.--along with the interviews I mentioned.

Sorry to say I do not have the Judy Fjell piece you speak of---a Nina Gerber piece---Kate's Guitar (sung by Greg Brown) is on the agenda.

To me, her voice was a thing of sheer beauty---and so moving emotionally.

Anything by Kate with Nina Gerber is always a joy to listen to, but for my money you can't top "Here in California" or "Poets Heart".

Never got to see Kate in person - but went to the Sonoma Folk Festival which honored her after she died - lots of tears.
In my view, "Poet's Heart" - the whole cd- is the best folk cd ever - because of Kate and Nina.

You all mention ust a few of the reasons why I am doing a small thing for her this Sunday and will follow with a long retrospective around the time of her birthday in January.

On Traditions (WFDU) many times we try to honor and commemorate artists---Marais/Miranda, Stan Rogers,Harry Chapin are some we have done (Ron Olesko and I). It dawned on me just listening to so much of her music that we have not really done enough to remember her---and who but us and a few people play her music on the radio anymore?

I hope you can join us for this.

yes, it will be wonderful to hear her again..
and it is always good to remember those who
are only with us in song...she was just getting
her career off the ground...Austin City Limits,
and i think Prairie Home Companion, too, when
the Leukemia put an end to her music...what a
treasure she was. I was asked to sing "Give
Yourself To Love" very soon after her passing
and unbeknowst to me her partner was in the
crowd. I was difficult for me to sing thru the
tears, but i can't imagine how much more so for
him!!

I have found that song is a wonderful one for
sign language interpretation...should be the
National Anthem...

Over the years. I've managed to snag most of her LPs. Sometimes she's kinda soft in the middle. Often not much dynamics, which to me
means that I find a lot of her stuff at once hard to listen to. I think she kept getting better, and like the other poster I really love
Poet's Heart and Here in California and many others. I had a chance to hear her in person, didn't go, and I'm sorry about that. Some of the records I have are autographed to other people, but I wish it was me.

Funny thing---Eric Bogle feels the same way. Sad that he never saw her in person. That voice can make you melt---and it seems she lived a life---albeit a short one---doing what she loved.

The last few years people in the local music community are singing more and more of Kate Wolf's songs. I haven't heard a bad one yet, although some 'speak' more directly to me than others.

At the Getaway this year I bought a double CD of hers, a retrospective (from 1975-1985) that she herself put together and it's a wonderful album. I play it a lot.

'Emma Rose' will probably be one of the first of the songs that I will learn.

You're wrong about that. I've got a picture of me and Kate and Eric together at the Winnipeg Folk Festival. It would have been from sometime in the late-1970s or early-1980s.

I would love to see it.

The Emma Rose story is still a great delight and tells us something about our litigous society.

Sorry Bill, that picture is decades old and in a photo album, not available for e-mailing.

In 1998, Red House Records released a tribute CD to Kate. In the liner notes, Eric Bogle wrote this about Kate:

Music - oh, that voice! California mellow
With a quiet rustle of fire beneath
I loved it when I first heard it
Twenty years ago

That means Eric first heard Kate around 1978, long before she died. Also, there's a verse about Eric in Kate's song, "Poet's Heart."

In any case, I can tell you, from personal experience, that Kate and Eric definitely knew each other.

Well, I guess he felt it a good story when I interviewed him. Goes to prove I should be a better fact checker before making statements --either that or get a job with Dan Rather at CBS or even FOX.

Too bad about not being able to see the picture---would have loved to have viewed it.

Bogle also has a nice song about Kate written after her death. Truly moving.

i heard a rumour that they (eric and kate) were,,,er,,,,um,,,an item
at one time and that they definately KNEW each other (in the biblical sense of the word) jsut a wild rumour??!! I think there is a song about green eyes some where...ther ones that don't miss a thing? the ones that cry in the rain? i wonder whose eyes are green? Or maybe that is Terry..
Fowler...who was her partner. and who staffs the Kate family booth at
her memorial music festival every year....

Info on the first songs she recorded, her
first 1973 LP, some beautiful, very folky songs, though not as well known as her later work.
A pity that album is being ignored as a real Kate Wolf album by the Wolf family...

I just heard Kate Wolf for the first time this week. My friend Deckman Bob had been telling me to seek out her music, and I'm glad I did. At first, I only liked her voice as one that was clear and sweet and easy to listen to, but as I listened more, I could see why she was so loved. It's a voice for the ages. I also didn't realize that she was the writer of the songs I'd heard, nor that she had died early in her career. What a shame, and once again, how lucky we are that we have her recordings. (There's something to be said about living in this age of technology.)

When I air the Kate Wolf commemoration on Jan.22(WFDU/Traditions) you will get over an hour of her music with her life story interwoven into it---and, yes, hers is a voice for the ages. I doubt one can hear it and not feel moved to either tears (certain pieces) or just a feeling of warmth by listening to it.

She also did songs composed by others---her first album was all lyrics by Kilberg and music by her. She has also covered Leonard Cohen among many others.

In the early '80's, KUNC-FM played "Telluride" sung apparently by Kate Wolf. That enigmatic song and fragments of both it and its chorus have followed me around over the years 'til the present.

Two great things happened for me this morning - I got the lyrics to "Telluride" and a new desire to find out about 'Regional' performers like Kate Wolf. The popular artists are like gold nuggets washed down the mountain, I think. The 'regionals' are the mother lode above them. Thanks and Best Regards,

she had lots of california images in her songs..
red tailed hawks, tall western cedars, here in
California, the fruit hangs heavy on the vine,
there's no gold, I thought I'd warn ya, and the
hills turn brown in the summer time, the san
Juaquin valley, beautiful sunsets, some of which
is regional, but so many of the personal images
she sings from the heart are very universal...
