I hate to say it, but it would probably help the 'general' Republican cause and raise their stature as a party to reject Bush and 'this' administration, and return in 4 years with better leadership...

Even New Hampshire has a group of Republicans for Kerry.

And as I said in onother thread, the lawn signs for Democrats are far more numerous than those for the Repulicans -- Tom

I'm totally confused. If so many Republicans are planning on voting for Kerry, why has Kerry lost so much ground in some of the Dem stronghold states like NJ, Ohio, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Iowa?

Hell, Gore carried most those states by VERY safe margins in 2000.

To further confuse matters, the new AP poll of likely voters just out, Kerry now leads Bush overall 50/46, and it is tied 47/47 among registered voters.

Other than Michael Moore, George Soros, and Noam Chomsky (white guys and their wives, in other words), it is difficult to figure out who exactly is going to vote for Kerry, as his numbers are swinging wildly all over the map.

And BTW, it isn't just me that is confused by all these wildly swinging numbers. Arianna is fainting on her couch over them too.

kat, I forwarded that article to my staunch "going to vote Republican all the way" sister in law, whom I love dearly, with the admonition "It isn't too late yet!"

My question - and asked fairly seriously - is how many bridges are we burning when we send material like that to people like that, material that they have basically already rejected? Even with a smiley, and a "Love, Ebbie", I'm probably coming across rather hamhanded? (Although, she did forward me the laudatory "Bush and the Intern" prayer thing. *G*)

IF Bush is elected, my relationship with my family will be the least of my worries. If John Kerry is elected, on the other hand... Does anyone have a soothing idea for me?

Ebbie, why would it matter? Are you so intolerant you can't live with/get along with Republican relatives? That is SO sad. I mean c'mon--it is really just another presidential election, no matter how much the anti-Bush lobby keeps crowing that the sky is falling.

We will NEVER heal these wounds and make up the gap between us if we can't accept people who vote differently than we do, especially people we adore!

This isn't civl war in the US, it is just a volatile election year.

Take some deep breaths, go for walks in the beautiful autumn weather, take a sauna, get a massage, and do something nice for the people you disagree with. Don't throw compassion out the window. After this is all over, we are going to have to find a way to come together and heal.

After this is all over, we are going to have to find a way to come together and heal. Guest

That is my point entirely, Guest. That is something that I can do- I'm a liberal, remember? *G* That is not necessarily my view of the abilities and inclinations of many conservatives I know.

For the record, I live more than 1000 miles from any of my family, so it is not as if I run into them every day of the week.

I think, however, that you may be a tad sanguine in your line: "This isn't civl war in the US, it is just a volatile election year." You may not have noticed but this is NOT just an election year. If Bush gets elected, we will have set the stage for unprecedented response. Where we go from there is anyone's guess. Including your own, Guest.

My Son, a United States Marine
    By Della T. Austin
    t r u t h o u t | Letter

    Thursday 07 October 2004

"I am writing this in hope that it will open some eyes, enrage, and disgust everyone that reads it. I am a PROUD mother of a U.S. Marine. My eyes have been opened and I am now enraged and disgusted with "OUR GOVERNMENT! My son is now in Iraq. Before he left Camp LeJuene, my side of the family and his wife had to get money together because my son had to spend over $300 to buy things he was "REQUIRED" to have in his gear. If he were missing one thing, he would not have been allowed to come home on his Block Leave to see his family before being deployed to Iraq! Almost $100 of this money had to be spent on a third set of "new and improved" Digital Cammies. He was lucky! He had been issued one set and had already bought a second set. Some of the Marines were not even issued one set so they spent almost $300 on just their Cammies. Money is being deducted from their pay for "equipment". My son has never really been sure WHAT equipment, but he paid for it.

"I was enraged when I found out that the Flack Jacket (their bullet proof vests) were the woodland version, the ones that are supposed to blend in with TREES! No one in Sierra Battery was issued Desert Flack Jackets! These marines will look like a group of trees in the middle of the desert! "

Ebbie:

When Candaian troops from the PPCLI (Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry) were about to be deployed to Afghanistan, the kids had the same BDUs. The job is dangerous enough without adding that to it. I sometimes think it would be a good thing for the civilians who send these kids to go with them. I expect that would improve everything from gear to food, weapons to medical attention like 'right now'. I will include your son in my prayers, Ebbie. And you.

"Up until the last 18 months, I was leaning toward Bush, but the more that happens the worse it gets," Schlichting said. "He sticks to his guns, but his aim is so far off that sticking to his guns is not paying off."

It can't be that surprising--what's surprising is that there would be any individuals with a claim to be a thinking being who could be for Bush. I also know three registered Republicans who will not vote for Bush. One of the best ways to get more is to nail Bush to his own platform--especially regarding abortion rights and the "Sanctity of Marriage" amendment.

Well if you want the right coloured flak jacket, I guess you might have to pay more taxes. It doesn't really add up does it. Obviously waging war is a fairly expensive business. You will need all kinds of military equipment. how can a government that makes such a big deal about lower taxes be committed to such a pro- ative military policy.

Mrs Thatcher was another such: tax cuts for the super rich and a belligerent attitude to all. I suppose the poor devils who sailed off to the Falklands in ships lined with inflammable material paid for her tax cutting. Don't make the same mistake we did.

And we never did find out what the hell that war was about.

"President Bush (news - web sites) will be the first president in 72 years to face the electorate with a net job loss. The Iraq (news - web sites) war has deeply torn the nation. National polls show a neck-and-neck race. Yet economy-based projections still show a decisive Bush victory on Nov. 2.

"What gives?"

Maybe America is waking up. Economic models have never worked anyway. They are very, very good, however, at predicting things after the event.

As Brucie points out, "economy-based projections" are of necessity extrapolating into the future based on the past.

1) Such projections are probably not worth much since they are based on old statistics. Not that I wish bad times for the US, but according to the Wall St Journal, the stubbornly high oil prices are likely to start cutting into any economic recovery strongly quite soon.   The job creation figure Friday was already much lower than expected.

2) The virtually unprecedented new voter registrations could easily upset all projections. Now it's only a question of turnout.
