Subject: RE: Tech: george lowden guitars From: Strollin' Johnny Date: 08 Oct 04 - 04:33 PM Is it a George Lowden (i.e. made by George himself) or a Lowden (i.e. made by the Lowden Guitar Co.? Not the same thing! If it's a GL, it would be worth a lot of money maybe £3-4k. If a Lowden, (and judging by the S/No that's what it is) it would have cost around £1,400 new. |

Subject: RE: Tech: george lowden guitars From: John in Brisbane Date: 09 Oct 04 - 09:09 AM Half a dozen years ago I played with a German guy who had just bought a cedar top Jumbo for about 1,500 quid. I have one of the original S Yari's (circa 197?2) made in Japan (by George?). His was tuned to DADGAD and mine EADGBE and we swapped and changed over a number of rehearsals and performances. It was uncanny how close they were in appearance and sound. I gather that once George got his sound right that he hasn't tinkered too much with the design. Market value is not important to me 'cos I'll never willingly part with it - I particularly love the strength and clarity of its mid range - something that's deliberately been designed out of most Martin's. BTW I understand that new Lowdens are delivered with Elixir strings as standard - certainly the best that I've used on this instrument. Regards, John |

Subject: RE: Tech: george lowden guitars From: cumbrian Date: 09 Oct 04 - 07:01 PM This is a mid 90's Lowden Guitar Co. instrument made in the Newtonards factory. The D series guitars are very good, but not generally perceived as being as great as the classic O and F series guitars. I would suggest no more than £995, if in very good condition. I have an 032 and an 025, they are both well made and superb sounding guitars. |

Subject: RE: Tech: george lowden guitars From: Dave Wynn Date: 09 Oct 04 - 08:03 PM Oh Dear...........another Spot. Oh well it was bound to happen. I have never heard a Lowden that I would buy. I have heard quite a few but they always sound stretched thin to me. Like the compromise that an accoustic guitar must have isn't there. All top end and narrow. Could be my ears though , I am aging now. Spot The Dog |

Subject: RE: Tech: george lowden guitars From: Strollin' Johnny Date: 10 Oct 04 - 02:44 AM It's a case of whatever floats your personal boat, STD. I've got a Lowden O-25 and a Martin J-40, and I'd hate to part with either of them, they are both superb instruments, each in its own way. They sound very different but, to me at any rate, equally 'good' (however you define that word!). For me that was the whole reason for having a Lowden and a Martin - they sound different, no point having two instruments that sound similar. The build quality of the Lowden is absolutely second to none. SJ :0) |

Subject: RE: Tech: george lowden guitars From: mississippi john Date: 10 Oct 04 - 05:28 AM thanks to all who have had the time for their imput. specials thanks goes to CUMBRIAN. the asking price for the D10 / 9038 was £1350.00. even though it is in good condition, and a lovely tone, I thought the price was a shade to high. once again thanks to all |
