Subject: BS: Bad Cat!!!! From: Pogo Date: 08 Oct 04 - 03:00 PM Bah...for the cat behavior experts and those with cats... I have a cat just out of kittenhood and he's developed a bad habit of biting and scratching when you try and pet him. He's jumpy about being touched suddenly which I think goes back to when I rescued him as a kitten one night from two big chow dogs that were trying to kill him. I've tried the taps on the head and the water sprays. I had hoped he might calm down once he had been neutured but that doesn't seem to have worked either. I don't want to give him away so any suggestions from the cat lovers on how to curb this bad habit of his and reinforce good behavior? |

Say for instance that yer sitting on the sofa and he comes to you... if he jumps up beside you, pet him... but don't pick him up and put him beside you... And when he starts to bite and claw, that's when you firmly push him away... right off the sofa if needs be... He may change his behaviour so that he gets more attention.... Then again, he might not... they you might have to resign yourself to having a 'bitey' cat... But still, let affaction be on his terms... You'll get less scratches that way... Remember that to other cats, that gentle biting and little scratching IS affection... The problem is we monkeys don't have the protective fur that they do, so it hurts us much more than it does them... |

It's more annoying than anything else but the cat gets rough about it sometimes...he also has a bad habit of jumping up on the chairs and trying to ambush you as you go by *sigh* Mike, I contemplated shaving him bald once when I was really annoyed with him and then decided that public humiliation probably wouldn't work well on a cat ;O) his name's Delmar...cause he got saved :) |

I wouldn't be surprised. Actually he looks like he's got a lot of Persian in him, he's white with black spots (looks like a cow) He enjoys getting his chin scratched. He comes when you call him. Sometimes. When he feels like it. He freaks out whenever another cat comes in (we have several outdoor cats) I don't know if he knows he's a cat. Maybe he thinks he's a mouse {O) |

I rescued/adopted Little One, her mother and a sister & brother. It was years before LO would even come out of hiding, let alone come close enough to be petted. But she loves to have her ears scratched, and loves to spend her time sleeping in the sun, or sleeping on top of the heat vent. And a few years ago, she started coming up into bed with me. Now she waits for me to come to bed, lays down next to me and lets me pet her. Your kitty will come around in his own time. Good for you for having him neutered. Maryanne |

Pogo, My Lizzie was anti-social for years until a friend dropped by with a bag of cat treats. Lizzie loved them and now does tricks for them and allows me to pet her. She still hates being picked up. There is a threshhold of opportunity for socializing cats with humans. Past a certain age, kittens who have not been held and petted will never adjust. For now, allow him to decide when he wants to come to you and if he gets rough, walk away. That's how mother cats and littermates deal with it. SINS |

Of the 2 Oscar initially was more friendly & does let me pick him up & hold him. Unfortunately, he seems to think interacting with me is 2 licks and a nip. Sometimes when I'm in bed he skips the licks & goes straight for nipping my nose. I either push him off or dive under the covers. I wait for my cats to jump in my lap. Felix will jump up & settle down for being petted. Oscar will jump up, but mostly stands in my lap. Felix plays more with the toys I have as well. |

If the kitten is scratchin' and biting when you first pet the cat then, yeah, you may have to leave it alone and let it come to you. But the larger question is how are you petting the kitten. Do you pick it up? If so, the act of being picked up may freek it out. Is the cat okay for awhile about being petted and then bites? If so, pet the cat less. Almost evey cat in the world can be petted to the point where they bite and/or scratch. So if that's your case you'll just have to learn how much is too much... Good luck but keep one thing in mind. As long as you are nice to kitty, kitty will be nice to you. No thumping on the head or squirking water on them unless you want a messed up kitty. They don't respond to punishment too well... I had a cat named Critter who once attempted to jump from the kitchen table to the kitchen counter. Problem was that I had just oiled the table and poor Critter didn't get the usaul launch traction, ended up hitting her poor head on the side of the counter and fell right into her own litter box under the counter where she promptly squatted, pretended to do something and covered the "pretend something" before slowly wanderin' off. There were three of us in the kitchen that witnessed this and soon as the cat had left the room, we all burst out in uncontrolable laughter... Oh, I love cats... Bobert |

Cats aren't pack animals so they don't really understand co-operation or obedience. Train with attraction (food, usually) and avoidance (make the thing that attracts them unattractive). He also has a lot of mental growing up left to do and might settle down as he ages. Ignore him. I've known lots of cats whose temperaments improved drastically when they were affection-deprived (also, if you aren't touching him, he can't bite you and doesn't have the chance to get used to doing it). Case in point--I've got a rescued cat living in my guest bathroom right now who bit several kennel employees (I work for a vet) when they tried to get her out to clean her cage. She doesn't like loud noises or sudden movements. So I brought her home, locked her in the bathroom, and went it twice a day to check her litterbox, food, and water, but didn't try to do anything with her. Now she wants all kinds of attention. It also worked wonders on my grandmother's Abyssinian, who had the temperament of a rabid Chow-Chow until she got sick and had to be hospitalized for a month. She was putty in our hands the rest of her life. |

We have had cats that didn't like to be touched, but would head-but in affection. Most Siamese like a deep-tissue stroke which flattens them out on the floor. Some like to pull their tails through your grasp, some will only accept stroking in certain places, such as between the shoulder-blades. You have to find out what they prefer, and it will probably NOT include picking up. Young children quickly spoil that for a cat. Squint at it. In Cat, that is non-aggressive. The reverse applies with dogs. Cats raise their tails and touch their friends with them as they pass. Put your hand down to eyelevel before petting, as some cats see an overhead approach as aggression. And yes, you do have to be Alpha. Our cats know that a shout and a clenched fist means 'Quit NOW or you will be slapped!' |

From: GUEST,Jon Date: 09 Oct 04 - 04:51 AM Cats vary a lot, eg. we have had some that are lap cats and others that are not, some that like thier tummy stroked and others that don't etc. It doesn't seem to me that your cat is exhibiting problem behaviour - he just doesn't like your attempt at stroking him. As others have indicated, leave him to his own devices. He will come round in his own time if and when he chooses to. Another thing to remember is cats are quite different to dogs and you can't train or discipline them in the same way. A dog wants to fit in and be part of the family and once it has found its position in the pack, will take and respond even to words like "bad dog" without even raising a hand let alone considering smacking it. Generaly with a cat, all you achieve by attempting to discipline is to frighten the animal. |

Then pet them gently until they calm down. I have tamed a ferocious iguana like this in about an hour. A cat I had took a couple of weeks of daily sessions, but she eventually responded and got to like and even demand petting. I saw a TV show once where this technique was applied to wild horses. To hold them immobile they put them in a horse box and filled it with grain so that only their head was exposed. They claimed that the horses usually became manageable after one session. |

Cookie was, quite simply, the alpha animal on the block. When he figured out that there was a new cat, dog, whatever, in the neighborhood, Cookie would promptly strut down the street to the offending animals abode. Cookie would search out the animal, whip its ass, and come home and let me know. I wish I understood cat-ese, because I am sure Cookie was saying "Mick, you should have seen it. There I was, all alone against this monster and all its kin.... " and so on. This went on for years. One day a neighbor got a new dog. It was a Saint Bernard, about 6 months old. Off goes Ole Cook to give the pup a down home, goin' to Jesus, butt whuppin'. But the Bernard was just too damn dumb to realize that he was gittin' his arse whipped. He thought the damn cat was playing with him, even though his nose was cut everywhere it could be cut. I guess the dog followed Cook back home. My Mother and I were in the basement, when a shadow appears at the basement window. We look up in time to see Cookie, with every hair on his body puffed out like a biscuit with butter in it. Then we see the dog bat Cookie who promptly came through the window, shattering the glass. Cookie falls 8' to the floor, lands on his feet, and sees us. Cat looks at us with a glare that implies "Don't even think that didn't do that on purpose". The sentiment implied by the glare was palpable. Then Cookie preens himself, comes by and gives us both a rub, and struts off with digity perfectly intact. My Mother and I laughed for quite a while. I miss that old cat. Mick |

I think I did manage to hurt the pride of one of ours the other day though. In spite of my comments above, I did smack one of ours the other day when I caught her on the kitchen table tops helping herself to an open tub of margarine. It was only 2 light 2 fingured smacks on her backside which I don't think hurt her at all but I think the indignity of having a smacked bottom did upset her a little. In this instance, it seems to have at least part worked too. She gets off the kitchen units pretty smartly if I am around but still speaks to me - this ones favourite bedtime spots at the moment are on the computer monitor in my bedroom as well as on my bed when I'm asleep. She is a little sod in the morning BTW and has 3 methods of getting me to wake up if she wants letting out. She will climb on the bed post and jump down on me, she will paw at my face and worst of all, she will nibble at my nose! Like Mick, I do have feline friends that I really miss. One called Starboard was my favourite. He had a method of waking me up too. His was not only to locate one of my ears and purr loudly down it but to dribble down it at the same time! |

I have had to bath a cat a couple of times and can assure you that you need to excercise great care unless you want to discover what they really can do with thier claws and teeth. The other fun one with a cat is trying to get a tablet down them. Vets seem to make it look so easy but I can't do it at all. Get thier mouth open, drop the thing in, get your arms ripped to shreds while half strangling the creature to try to make it swallow only to find as soon as you release the cat, it still had the tablet in its mouth and spits it out. When our cats need medication, we try to hide it in thier food but even then you can find they leave a little portion of the food - the bit with the tablet in. |

I once carefully 'dropped' Max off the sofa one day, where he landed with a crunch and a piteous howl. When I got home and he was still limping, I took him to the vet. £300 Xray and a day later, we found he'd strained his cruciatus (sp?) tendons (the ones over the kneecap) and was put on special treatment. This meant carrying him around the house and helping him up onto surfaces like the sofa, or to get out of the catflap. About 8 days later, he was still hobbling round the house and I was still helping him up and down. One afternoon I helped him out the catflap, and as it was cold, shut the door, waiting for him to yell for in. I was popping out to see if he was waiting, when I saw him gallop down the garden, chasing birds. As soon as he heard me open the back door, he limped to a halt and started hopping desolately down the garden..... the special treatment halted forthwith! LTS |

I knew I was going away for a couple of weeks so I carefully made arrangements for my cat to be fed, etc. I told my friend to always leave the door to the bsmt. open because that was where her cat box was. When I returned, I opened the door and the entire living room was covered in cat hair. There had been a heat wave and she had been locked upstairs with no water and no catbox. The poor thing! I quickly cared for her and then began sniffing around. I was really puzzled. Where was the shit? I found it that night. She had shit in the bathtub and carefully pushed every piece down the drain! Yes, it meant that I had a disgusting job to do but talk about dignity! I have a whole new respect for my little feline. d |

This is a learned behavior and natural to the cat so when we had one that did this, I asked my vet. He had an idea which I thought was wacky as hell. I had a cat with a serious biting issue and my vet suggested a 1/2 teaspoon of gasoline fer chrissake!!! I admit that I thought the guy was nuts, but it did work, sorta. It ain't too easy to get a half teaspoon of gasoline down a cat's throat, but when I did, he liked to tore me to shreds getting away. He blasted around the room about 3 or 4 times, ran up the hallway, up the stairs, back down both, and into the den, leaped on the drapes and ran to the end of the curtain rod. From there he leaped down and ran right to me and instead of biting, licked me for 3 or 4 minutes. Suddenly he stopped and fell on his side on the floor, lying very, very still......... I thought I'd killed the poor thing, but it turns out he'd just run out of gas. Spaw |

So far, he is a giant 6-month-old monster lummox, and a total wussy ball of affection. :) Loves to be picked up, held upside-down, all of it. He's a little skittish around new people, but that quickly goes away when they are able to pet him. :) He will flick his tail to be played with for hours if you let him, and it is a magnificent thing, all fluffy. This provides a "power wash and rinse" which is most effective. Note: You may need to stand on the lid so that the cat cannot escape. 6 Have someone to open the door to the outside and ensure that there are no people between the toilet and the outside door. 7 Stand behind the toilet as far as you can, and quickly lift both lids. 8 The now-clean cat will rocket out of the toilet, and run outside where he will dry himself. 9 Repeat once cat is dry. I have to trim her claws a little as she is not very adept at scratching them down on the cat post. (she came from a bad home and is only now learning how to do some things). I sit her next to me on the sofa, and lift a paw, she holds it up for me like in a manicure parlour and lets... LETS! me clip her claws. I've also been teaching her how to use her cat post, to the amusement of me other half. It took me an age showing her how to use the cat flap (again to my other halfs amusement). And when she was given fresh chicken and fresh fish for the first time she went mad for it. It's taken us a year to get her to like us, and in that year we've taught her how to play (she didn't even know how to do that - her previous owner had given her no stimulation at all, she was ignored and left to get on with it). Now, anything is fair game, she hides behind sofas and launches an attack on you. Pounces on the family dog when it is least likely to expect it. And has turned in to the most lovely cat ever. But I still miss my bad ass cat that I had from when I was 5. He died when I was 25, a feral kitten which we tamed. It was never a dull moment with him, and he was like a tasmanian devil. But with us he was a softy. Pee him off though, and he'd launch an attack maybe 20 minutes later when you are least expecting it. He chased me down the garden once when I was smaller. Me hopping in the air, him flying behind me attacking me. He hated men (except my dad), but was the fabbest cat ever! Ella |

The only time I felt a moment of affection for him was when he attacked a particularly abnoxious livestock feed salesman by jumping on him from the top of an old refrigerator, ripping a strip out of the back of the guys shirt from shoulder to belt. The memory is still vivid after almost 50 years. No, I'm not a cat-hater; just referring to one cat who wasn't easy to love. |

We tried patience. We tried everything. We were either going to have her put down, or take her back to the people we got her from when she was a kitten. In the nick of time, a vet suggested something that worked! Every time we feed her, we put the dish down, then place a hand on the top of her head - putting her in a place of submission. If she can keep the hand on there for a few seconds without turning and snapping it off, she gets to eat her food. Otherwise, we put the food bowl into the cupboard, with her watching, and she isn't allowed to eat it for 2 or 3 hours. Then same thing - hand on head for a few seconds, then eat the food. Within 2 days, she was CURED! She had only a couple of small relapses. She is NICE now!!! Try it. It works. ~b.w. |
