Subject: RE: New Octave Mandola/Mandolin recording From: Aidan Crossey Date: 15 Oct 04 - 11:53 AM I thought I'd got across the fact that it's a little "underproduced" on the website. I'm in two minds about it's "rough'n'ready"-ness. At the end of the day, I don't always have a lot of time available to make these wee CDs and so I can't spend ages and ages doing umpteen takes. So what emerges is quite honest. I can hardly bear to listen to the recordings once they're put together; it's a lot of hard work and sometimes, to my ears, the outcome doesn't always sound as if it reflects the work that's gone into them. Still ... The last track is, indeed, a snippet of my granda, John Crossey singing "The Star Of Donegal". He had just about enough breath left in him at the time to get through this and a few other snatches of songs. But I often think of him when I'm making music; he'd have loved the crack! Be good ... But it might just put others off. Perhaps you ought to explain that this is a really minimalist production. Personally I like that spartan feel, it's really "dangerous". Great versions of "The Ace And Deuce" and "Screen" by the way (you never told me that you did this!). And that last track ... I take it that's your grandfather, God rest him? All the best. |

Subject: RE: New Octave Mandola/Mandolin recording From: Áine Date: 13 Oct 04 - 09:50 AM Dia dhuit, a Aidan! I'm so glad to see that you have a new recording!! I've just about played the tapes I have of you to death, so I'll be sending some sawbucks your way ;-) I'm waiting for Davy Stuart to finish an octave mandolin for me. He's working on it now, and I'm just about to start counting the days. With your new recording, I know I'll have lots of inspiration to master my new instrument. And gigiz, if Aidan can't manage to get the MP3s up on his site, just take it from me that any recording he makes is well worth the money. He's a brilliant musician -- no brag, just fact. Maith thú, a chara! All the best, Áine |
