The origin of the name "Kissimmee" is not known with certainty. The 1733 Popple Map of Florida labels where the "Cacema" Indians resided in Central Florida, near present day Lake Kissimmee and the Kissimmee River. Natives in the area in 1860 reportedly pronounced the word "Kiss-imm-ee".

The City of Kissimmee was originally a small trading post on the northern bank of Lake Tohopekaliga known as the community of "Allendale". After the Civil War this area was included in a purchase of 4,000,000 acres of marshland and plains by Mr. Hamilton Disston, the owner of Disston Saw Company in Philadelphia. Many steamboat captains navigated the chain of lakes leading from Kissimmee to the Gulf with cargoes of cypress lumber and sugar cane. On March 24, 1883, the citizens voted to incorporate the City, changing the name from Allendale to Kissimmee City. From the late 1800's into the turn of the century, the economy of the Kissimmee area relied strictly on cattle and sugar cane.

I seem to rememember a Sports Illustrated story of years back about the local baseball club. Although a farm team of the Houston Astros, this outfit was called the Hawks, because it would have been difficult to have a team called the Kissimee Astros...

this couple was driving to daytona and saw the sign ,kissimee,along to highway!
the husband turned to his wife and said that he thought that was a neat name for a town,probably a romantic event connected with the name, kissimee! his wife abruptly told him it was pronounced kissimee(key SI mee)...long "i"...and that the town was named after an indian tribe that was there long before columbus discovered america!well,they argued about it as they drove down the interstate...the husband told his wife to stop at the next fast food place and he would go in and find out for sure! so,she pulls up the next ramp,drives into a fast food parking lot and the hubby gets out of the car and goes in! he waits in line for a few minutes and finally the waitress ask him what would he like to order.
he tells her that he and his wife are having an argument about how to pronounce the name of "this place!" he ask the waitress to look him straight in the eye and tell him the correct pronounciation of,"this place!"
so,the waitress leaned over the counter,looked him straight in the eye and said,"BURGER KING!"

Hi John,

Kissimmee is the city that fronts the Walt Disney World area. There's a lot of touristy things but also a lot of wonderful nature to see. It's also 50 miles from the Space Coast and Kennedy Space Center, and it's 25 miles south of Orlando - where I live - which has a lot of non-touristy things to see. Of course if you want some touristy things - Disney has 4 main theme parks (Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Disney MGM Studios & Animal Kingdom), there are 5 major water sports parks, a Sea World and Universal Studios 2 parks.

If you decide to come, PM me and give me an idea of some stuff you might like to see. Also - I always have an open invitation to buy any visiting Mudcatter a pint of the quality if they wish. I'd be happy to talk you on a walking tour of Downtown to show you the sights and tell you a bit about the history of Orland and Central Florida.

Music-wise, the area is kind of hit-or-miss when it comes to folk, etc., but being a major city (1.7 million in the metro area) we do get some interesting acts. Some good local stuff too. If you decide to come, let me know when and I'll get a list together live music happening then.

I've got the chance of a fly drive holiday to Kissimee on 5th November. Is it a good place to go, and what is there to see, and are there any Catters around. I've found Blackcatter in the members list but that's all.
