Subject: Tune Req: Sing Out Back Copies and Scanners From: John in Brisbane Date: 11 Oct 04 - 03:12 AM Sing Out very generously provides MIDIs on its Website for most of the songs and tunes it publishes quarterly. I've identified a number of songs which are missing tunes either in the main Digital Tradition collection or those for which lyrics already exist in the Mudcat Forum. I'll gladly produce NWC files and/or ABC files with aligned lyrics, but without the printed scores it's often difficult to get dots and lyrics aligned properly (particularly for songs I don't know - that means most of them). Have considered buying the entire collection of back copies but the cost of the publications plus international postage is beyond my means. Furthermore I can't find a library in Australia which hosts this publication. My question is - Does anyone, anywhere have a personal collection of Sing Out and would be prepared from time to time to send me a scanned copy of a troublesome song - or any other ideas which might remove the tedium. I suspect that the MIDIs at their Website and the dots that they publish are not identical 'cos I've had to do extensive massaging or lyrics and/or notes to get a proper fit. On a slight change of subject I will at some stage produce an index of all the MIDIs available at the Sing Out site so that anyone doing a Forum Super Search can as a minimum recognise that a fine tune resource is available for missing tunes. If you are able to help now or at some stage in the future please let me know. A PM would be fine. Regards, John |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Sing Out Back Copies and Scanners From: John in Brisbane Date: 11 Oct 04 - 09:46 AM I note that the Sing Out Website started producing MIDIS with the Volume 42 #1 -- May/Jun/Jul '97 issue so that's 32 issues of Index (for a start). Regards, John |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Sing Out Back Copies and Scanners From: GUEST,Lin in Kansas Date: 11 Oct 04 - 11:31 PM John-- Sing Out! has printed collections of their magazines: Vols. 1-6 (1959-1964) and Vols. 7-12 (1964-1973), called (surprise!) The Collected Reprints from Sing Out! The Folk Song Magazine. They can be ordered from Sing Out Corporation, P.O. Box 5253, Bethlehem, PA 18015-5253, for around $17.50 each. Sing Out's phone number for inquiries is (215)865-5366. We have the two books mentioned in the above paragraph. I don't know if they've done a third collection yet (Joe?). Each book has dots, chords, and verses, with copyright info and attribution wherever known. Most of the songs have a bit of background blurb too. All that said, if there are any in particular you want, give a holler via PM. Lin |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Sing Out Back Copies and Scanners From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 12 Oct 04 - 06:41 AM I looked at the Sing Out! website. A number of single issues are offered, but not the collected volumes. A UK dealer offers collected vol. 7-12 for US$73. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Sing Out Back Copies and Scanners From: John in Brisbane Date: 12 Oct 04 - 07:26 AM Thanks for all the responses via the Forum and PM. Over the years I think I've collected all or most(ish) of the Reprints from Sing Out. We have discussed this general sunject a number of years back, but I was too lazy to refer to the previous thread before penning this note. As of today I've created an Index of all the Songs and Tunes that have been published in the Quarterly Sing Out Mag from Mid 1997 until Fall 2004 (whenever that was - does that mean now? The Northern Hemisphere nomenclature confuses me no end.) There's close to 600 of them of which maybe 100 or so are probably instrumental tunes only and maybe a further 50 which don't have MIDIs. So the Index will allow us to locate about 450 songs for which there are MIDIs at the Sing Out site. The Index will provide an alphabetical listing of songs, the author/singer, a blue clicky to the relevant Sing Out page where the MIDI resides, the Volume Number and Date of Publication plus a description of the Front Cover. Joe Offer will inevitably have to sanitise my disorderly HTML and may then create a PermaThread - that's Joe's call. I'll wait for Joe to post and then we can discuss any further developments. He was going away for a couple of weeks, so I'll sit tight for the moment. Regards, John |
