Subject: Origins: Logan English? From: GUEST,stumd3@hotmail.com Date: 11 Oct 04 - 02:16 PM Good afternoon, I was given a tape called "The Woody Guthrie Songbag" by a great folksinger named Logan English by a gentleman who used to play with the Clancy's in Greenwich Village. I have never seen his name mentioned or any evidence of his recordings anywhere. My questions are: - Does anyone know anything about him? - Are any of his recordings available? - Would anyone be able to help me obtain any if they own them? Thank you very much! |

Subject: RE: Origins: Logan English? From: Bill D Date: 11 Oct 04 - 04:56 PM one of my great losses...I had the original "Woodie Guthrie Songbag" LP 35 years ago....loaned it to somone who 'thought' they might get the same disease Woody had and who was immersing herself in Woodie stuff. They were supposed to tape it & return it. I never saw it again. |
Subject: RE: Origins: Logan English? From: Alonzo M. Zilch (inactive) Date: 11 Oct 04 - 06:01 PM I knew Logan in the early-1970s when he was living in Saratoga Springs, NY. He was always ready with a story and I learned a lot about Woody Guthrie from him. Unfortunately, Logan's alchoholism was pretty bad by then and he had become an unreliable performer. He died after being hit by a car one night. |

From: GUEST,Art Thieme Date: 11 Oct 04 - 07:18 PM TANDY LACY, wife of storyteller Dan Keding is a close relative of Logan English's--although I can't seem to recall specifics. I do know that Dan has Logan's banjo and that the family wanted Dan to have it. I will E-mail them and request they look in here. Art Thieme |
Subject: RE: Origins: Logan English? From: GUEST,Dan Keding Date: 12 Oct 04 - 01:32 PM Neighbors, My father-in-law was Logan English's cousin and they spent many summers together as boys in Kentucky. When I married my wife, Tandy Lacy, we visited Logan's mother at her home outside Paris, Kentucky where Logan grew up. During the course of our visit Corrilla asked me if I played the banjo. At the time I was horrible, now I've graduated to pretty bad. I did tell her I played a bit and she took me to Logan's old room and presented me with his banjo as a wedding gift. Its a mid 1920's Bacon and Day Silver Bell five string and it is beautiful - the case had play bills from his concerts - one of them is advertising a concert he did with Carolyn Hester in Woodstock, New York - and another from the World's Fair in New York. The banjo plays beautifully, has great tone and is way beyond what my skill deserves. I have most if not all of his recordings including a Social Security album where he is being interviewed by Oscar Brand. His mother and brother are dead now and the old home was bought by a friend of the family. I do know that his old 000 Martin was given to Bill Staines but I believe he has sold it. Logan had a great voice and learned many of the songs on his earliest recordings from the people he grew up around in Kentucky. Nice to see his name mentioned here on the Cat. Take care, Dan Keding |

Subject: RE: Origins: Logan English? From: GUEST,john Date: 09 Jan 05 - 12:37 AM Logan English was a family friend and an early musical influence as a frequent visitor in our home. My brothers and I were pallbearers at his funeral. Corrilla and Woody were also close family friends. As a gesture for my father I would like to gather as many of Logan's recordings as I can lay my hands on. I would also would be interested in knowing the whereabouts of any of his instruments. Thanks in advance. John |
