Performed by Maidey Scott not T.E. Dunville, although he did perform a song entitled 'Mother's Advice'. The fault was on my web page and I've now corrected it. Apologies for any confusion this may have caused.

Paul.

Hi, Nigel. Glad to have been of help.

The thing driving me lulu are sites that when I google for a song lyric seem to have the words, but open their page and they say 'if you put the words on our site we will credit you with having done so.' I guess they don't perceive "get stuffed" to be a song lyric.

Nice find. Thanks for the full lyrics.

The post above (12/9 12:38) seems to be one of these websites that will grab lyrics from anywhere.
All they've quoted is the two verses (displayed as 4) that I quoted further up. Complete with my punctuation, and purely from memory, so including anything I'd mis-remembered!

Cheers
Nigel

MOTHER'S ADVICE

Mother told me that I should
Do my utmost to be good
Sound advice to me she gave
Taught me how I should behave
I'm glad I took my Mother's advice
Mother's advice, Mother's advice
'Never kiss the boys.' said she
So now I let the boys kiss me.

Up the trees I like to climb
Feeling glum it is sublime
Mother said, 'Whatever you do
Don't let the boys climb trees with you.
I'm glad I took my Mother's advice
Mother's advice, Mother's advice
They don't climb trees with me, oh no
They help me up and wait below.

When I was in bed one night
We had visitors, that's right
Ma said, 'Don't let Cousin John
See you with your nightie on.'
I'm glad I took my Mother's advice
Mother's advice, Mother's advice
I said with a modest cough
'When John comes in… I'll stay in bed.'

Performed by T.E. Dunville (1868-1924)

Mothers Advice

Mother told me that I should,
Do my utmost to be good.
"Never kiss the boys," said she.
So now I let the boys kiss me

I'm glad I took my mother's advice,
Mother's advice, mother's advice
"Never kiss the boys," said she.
So now I let the boys kiss me

Up the trees I loved to climb.
'Scrumping' apples was divine.
Mother said, "Whatever you do,
Don't let boys climb trees with you."

I'm glad I took my mother's advice,
Mother's advice, mother's advice
I don't climb trees with boys, Oh no.
When I climb up they wait below.

It was on a wonderful Vinyl Lp untold years ago "A Night at The Music hall" ...Or "the Players Theatre"....with people like Clive Dunn, Bill (Compo)Owen and Hattie (Sykes) Jacques. If noone else has the LP, I'll look it out and Listen to it. But I agree, It was around a long time before Pam Ayres was even thought about.

O.k. so it's not original Pam Ayres (unless we're talking 2 songs on the same theme)
Any more words?

Nigel

Kilgarriff (always look there first for this type of song) gives it as 'authorship unknownand seemingly unpublished' . It was a popular music hall number, recorded by Maidie Scott in 1915. This is the version on the Windyridge CD. Lovely song.

Any help with this one please?

I think it was Pam Ayres, but I could be wrong as she recited most of her stuff rather than singing.

Excerpts only:

MOTHER'S ADVICE

Mother told me that I should,
Do my utmost to be good.
"Never kiss the boys," said she.
So now I let the boys kiss me

I'm glad I took my mother's advice,
Mother's advice, mother's advice
"Never kiss the boys," said she.
So now I let the boys kiss me

Up the trees I loved to climb.
'Scrumping' apples was divine.
Mother said, "Whatever you do,
Don't let boys climb trees with you."

I'm glad I took my mother's advice,
Mother's advice, mother's advice
I don't climb trees with boys, Oh no.
When I climb up they wait below.

......
......
She said "Don't let cousin John,
See you with your night things (nightdress?) on.

I'm glad I took my mother's advice,
Mother's advice, mother's advice
I said, with a modest cough,
"When John comes in I'll...(pause)..stay in bed

Possibly there are other verses, the last verse definitely needs a couple more lines.
Anyone know it?

CHEERS

Nigel
