There is a singable English version to the famous Torreador song from Verdi's opera. I used to hear my mother sing it years ago, but forgot most of the words. The last line was "For thee that true one waits, torreador, for thee that true one waits". Can anybody help out on this one ?   SOL ZELLER

Toreador don't spit upon the floor
Use the spitoon, that's what it's for.

A lone fragment from somewhere.
Giok

Giok, my family sang it:

"...Use the CUSPIDOR, that's what it's for."

Scans and rhymes better.

Red-Shirts who are awaiting Kirk's command;
Time to beam down, now you must land.
And when your alien foe are close at hand,
Spill your guts on the sand.
And when yo all have met, your final fate,
Kirk will nego-ti-ate!

CHEERS

Nigel

Or from "Carmen Jones':

Stand up and fight, boys, 'til you jear the bell
Stand up and fight, fight like hell!

I remember some of the words and I think they are similar to the ones you quoted. If I remember right they were:
Toreador now guard thee
Toreador, Toreador
Bear thou in mind when combat thee elates
Bright eyes fondly adore thee
For thee a fond heart waits
Toreador Toreador.
Does this ring a bell.

Found with Google Book Search, in "The High School Assembly Song Book" by Frank R Rix, 1912.

TOREADOR SONG
"Carmen." G. Bizet, arr. By F. R. Rix.
Tr. By F. R. R.

1. Soldiers brave, your kindness, answer claiming,
We greet with pleasure, comrades gay and bold;
Yes, we Toreros, With ardor flaming,
Feel delight and thrill with joy When we combat behold.
'Tis a festal day, seats are crowded,
Full with eager throngs to view the coming treat;
Loud is the shouting, All eyes are straining;
Surging to and fro, the people strive their hero to greet.
Hear the shouting and the loud applauding
When the bull leaps out and stands with haughty mien!
'Tis indeed the fete of hearts courageous
'Tis the day when brave deeds are seen.

CHORUS: Come on! Prepare! On guard! Beware!
Ah! Toreador, be careful! Toreador! Toreador!
Know this, to help thee in thy valiant fight,
One heart is fondly prayerful,
For thee that true one waits, Toreador!
For thee that true one waits.

2. Suddenly the noise is silenced, the noise
is silenced. What can the matter be?
Then comes the answer, then comes the answer;
Swift a mighty bull bounds forth, strong and free.
On he flies! He strikes his enemies,
A horse is overthrown, With him falls a picador;
Ah! Bravo, Toro, wildly is shouted,
Onward flies the bull, now here, now there,
In frenzy he fights. Goaded by the banderillos,
With furious looks he comes; the ring is red with gore!
Terrified all try to jump the fences,
Time for you, O Toreador.

"Toreador Now Guard Thee" certainly does ring a bell. Probably an Edison Bell in fact.

My Mum had an old windup gramophone which came with an assortment of 8", 10" & 12" records. Some were so old that the original recording had been done acoustically i.e. by shouting into a dirty great horn!

Most of the records were dance band stuff by Harry Bidgood, Henry Hall etc "with vocal refrain" but a few were operatic classics which had been rewritten to last no longer than 5 minutes. The Toreador Song was one. Also an aria from the Magic Flute - the label said "Now Your Days of Philandering are Over" (Cherubino Brave and Bold). All these old translations seem to have been full of Thees, Thines and similar doublet ruffling stuff.

My Mum, at the age of 94, still sings snatches from the Mozart aria - and the lyrics set my teeth on edge EVERY TIME!!

edthefolkie, you have the wrong Mozart opera. Cherbino is a character in THE MARRIAGE OF FIGARO, not THE MAGIC FLUTE.

The weird thing is that I know that aria, "Non piu andrai," sung by Figaro to Cherubino, in another English version, by Ruth and Thomas Martin:

From now on, my impetuous lover
No more frantic romantic excursions
Such diversions are done with and over
Cherubino, my young cavalier
Such diversions are done with and over
Cherubino, my young cavalier

Sorry yes, it's Figaro - senior moment! That'll teach me to work when I should be posting.

Not that you could tell what aria it was let alone what opera by the time the old record got broken. I can still hear the scraping from the tortured grooves. What a shame - the singer was lovely Peter Dawson.

We had a version that emerged one morning at school:

Sorry I'm late sir, but I missed the bus;
No need to make such an awful fuss.
Each day I try to catch the 129
But it never seems to come on time...

And the rest is lost in the mists of muddled memory.

Toreador, make ready,
Toreador, Toreador,
And think on her, on her who all can see,
On a dark eyed lady, and on us all we sing,
Toreador, on all us make ready!

To-re-a-dor, To-re-a-dor make ready!

There is a version in English that I cannot find. Pardon me if I butcher this, I learned this over ten years ago.

Toreador en garde
Toreador, toreador.
Try not to be distracted by the crowd
Something something while you fight..
Dark eyes are watching you
Toreador
Love will be yours tonight!

Help! I would really like to find this specific version!
