When Nelson Mandela came to Glasgow he was given the Freedom of The City and the song was performed for him by a local choir. Over the years Ian Walker has written some very good songs and I think this is the best of the lot

Why not ? Probably because it's something that Ian Walker felt strongly about. By your reckoning, Hamish Henderson should never have written "The Freedom Come All-Ye".
Do you think Scots songwriters should ignore the rest of the world and only write about Scotland ? Ludicrous.

Why is a Scottish tune referencing three South African massacres?

Correct, Auldtimer.

Bye the bye, no song syrics were found, but sufficient song lyrics were posted to fill the need.

Sigh.

BanjoRay- It seems that in this old thread there were actually two requests; one for the song syrics and a later one for the fiddle tune. It appears to me that both have been fulfilled and this request can be removed from the Unanswered Requests thread.

Elves/Experienced Mudcatters, is my assessment correct?

The ABC code given by Masato Sakurai and John In Brisbane is for an American Old Time fiddle tune, and, I suspect not the one for the Scottish song also called Hawks and Eagles. I've played the OT tune for years and never heard of any lyrics for it.

I have a collection of Scottish songs and tunes with this one on it, quite well-sung. I found these lyrics with my first search; I hope this is what you're looking for, as they are the ones on that CD:

HAWKS AND EAGLES
(Ian Walker/M.C.P.S./P.R.S.)

As I was walking down the road,
I met my brother with a heavy load
I said to him what have you seen,
He said to me
I have a dream.
In 1960, I thought I'd died in Sharpeville's bloody town,
But I got up I walked on tall nobody's goin' to put me down.

Hawks and eagles fly like doves (x4)

As I walked out along the way
I saw my sister bend and pray,
I said to her why do you kneel,
She says you don't know how I feel.
I had a little boy and a little girl,
I loved to watch them grow.
But they were butchered on the streets in the blood of Sowetto.

It's '85 and I'm walking still,
Across Uitenhaage Hill,
Saw a crowd set off at the dawn of day,
The soldiers said don't come this way.
Then somebody threw a stone as they walked up the track
A boy on a bike was the first to fall with a bullet in his back.

It's been a long, long hard road,
Three hundred years since the settlers strode
Into that Southern land,
Now they rule with an iron hand.
Low pay, no vote and passbook laws,
Don't talk back they say.
But the hawks and the eagles will fly like doves,
When the people rise one day.

Silly me, I played with the rhythm of the A Part and adjusted some note values accordingly, only to realise that that the B Part repeats most of the tune an octave lower. I'm fairly confident that it should sound like this:

X:1
T:Hawks and Eagles
M:C
L:1/8
K:G

A couple of bars in the A Part only have 7 beats in the bar instead of 8. I don't know the tune but it gives the impression that the bar lengths should be uniform? Any other clues?

Regards, John

We have this song on a Scottish collection CD. If you haven't located the words yet, I can play it through & try to write down the lyrics for you.

It is a great song!

Let me know if this helps.
