Two funny moments I just thought of. ShoreGrass learned "I'll Fly Away" for the gospel set, but didn't quite have it down perfect in time. After we did the song, Jerry gallantly announced that it took much practice to come in so precisely separate like that!

And then during the food court jam, my guitar was at the instrument check room and I was itching to join in the music. Dwditty gallantly offered me his beautiful guitar to play. I took it, strummed a G chord and announced that it was too out of tune, I'd go get my own. He discreetly informed me that it was in Drop D tuning!

Great px, Barbara!
I too felt torn between Mudcat events. In fact, as small as this festival was, I missed many events because I had promised someone to go to their event- whether to dance, or support Bruce Randall in his wonderful West Gallery workshop, or whatever. So I missed the 'Chucks, too- but Jerry, Barbara, and DW- what energy you transmitted! Great gospel of all kinds! I never heard "God Bless the Child" like that, DW- it's a favorite, and you just added to the richness.
Yup, thank goodness for NEFFA- now we need something in February to round out the year!

Allison

Greetings!

Back in July I spent 5 days in the hospital with an attack of acute pancreatitis, and for the first 48 hours or so I nearly took a walk through the Lonesome Valley as my enzyme levels were nearly twelve times normal and my other organs began to fail. Well, the bottom line is I'm still here, and I was really happy to official do two events at NOMAD and sit on on several others. So the news is I'm back! Now I don't know if you consider that good news or bad news -- maybe it's both -- but you'll have to put up with me just the same.

Yes, I made a very brief appearance at the Eisteddfod-NY back in August, singing a couple of songs in the New Songs, Old Styles workshop. But I was very weak and still in a lot of pain, and if it weren't for pain meds I would have never made it at all. But now all I have is a little mild discomfort now and then, and I can handle it without drugs. On top of that, I've become a near-vegetarian -- a little chicken broth and seafood are OK -- and I've lost over 40 pounds. I feel as strong as a bull, and by NEFFA I'll be roaring -- so I hope!

--- Steve Suffet

I'm finally lurking around the list again, and have to agree -
NOMAD this year was really fine! Since the school is larger than
other places where they've had the festival during the past 17 years,
it was difficult to tell whether attendance was up or down. The
quality of the performances was top-notch, however... just as I
thought they'd be. John Roberts had a standing room only crowd
when I arrived on Saturday at 2:30. Best of all way the general
level of support and friendliness, in concert rooms and dance halls.
I certainly felt very supported in my traditional songs of NY/NE
session - and thank everyone for their very kind words. I had a great time!

Need something around February to keep going? Try the Dance Flurry
in Saratoga Springs. Yes, it's more dance than singing and music
workshops - but there's always some sacred harp singing, a pub sing,
and various concert sets, as well asl instrumental workshops. Mid-winter is a great time to get moving, and figure out how it is that "they not get all crossed up?"
(How do we not get all crossed up driving on the highway? We figure
out where we're going. In the dance, the music helps also.)

Anyway, three cheers for NOMAD - let's all help out to make sure that it happens again.

-Pamela
