Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Here's to the Gordons From: Tattie Bogle Date: 18 Oct 15 - 08:26 PM Gie in Scots means GIVE. However, ay and ie sounds are also very similar in Scots as my poor Scottish mother used to find when spelling her name out, which began with an A - 9 times out of ten people would write E! As for "guy" - that might just be "gey" - but usually used as an adverb meaning very - as in "that wis gey guid". |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Here's to the Gordons From: GUEST Date: 16 Oct 15 - 07:53 PM When on holiday in Gordon territory the guide at one of the historic monuments said they were the Gie Gordons. The nearest meaning I could give is workey ticket ie. trying it on and full of lighthearted mischief rather than evil. She said it was an adjective still in use in the 50's dialect ,but now only the older generation still used it. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Here's to the Gordons From: GUEST,Kevin Gordon Date: 14 Oct 15 - 04:04 PM The Song is actually known as "The Guy Gordons" (Guy meaning handsome, apparently). I don't know if it has any lyrics, but if it does I'd love to know them. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Here's to the Gordons From: Tattie Bogle Date: 07 Sep 15 - 04:37 AM Found a Youtube of the Jim Macleod band playing for a Gay Gordons dance: only 2 tunes, neither of which I could name. The original Gay Gordons tune is by James Scott Skinner, as here: Gay Gordons |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Here's to the Gordons From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 04 Sep 15 - 09:46 AM Well, let's see. There are three of them, and they are marked "As played by Jim McLeod and his band." Two of them are in 2/2 time and the key of D. The other is in 4/4 time and the key of A. Apparently dance organizers somewhere leaders simply wrote the name of the dance on the music and lost the names of the tunes. I'm sorry for that. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Here's to the Gordons From: Tattie Bogle Date: 03 Sep 15 - 08:47 PM Not sure what tunes you mean by Gay Gordons 1,2 and 3? AFAIK there is only one tune by that name, but many many tunes can be used for the Gay Gordons dance, mainly 2/4 and 6/8 marches. Would be interested to know which tunes you were using, Leeneia. I play in 2 ceilidh bands, and between them we have 10 sets of 3 or more tunes which we use, including a so-called "Irish Gay Gordons" where all the tunes are in fact Irish, but being in the right timing, they work fine for the dance. Sorry for thread drift. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Here's to the Gordons From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 03 Sep 15 - 01:14 AM A month ago I played music for a country dance, and we played 3 tunes, Gay Gaydons 1,2, and 3. Add the tunes to the song, and you'd have a nice set for a gig. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Here's to the Gordons From: Tattie Bogle Date: 13 Nov 04 - 07:15 PM Anyone got the tune for this? I know "A Gordon for me" by Robert Wilson. My grandfather was in the Gordon Highlanders and invalided out of France in WW1: found loads of interesting stuff about him while clearing out my parents' flat. TB |
Subject: Lyr Add: HERE'S TO THE GORDONS (Stewart/Wilson/... From: Kenny B (inactive) Date: 13 Nov 04 - 09:24 AM Hi Tam The Mitchell library does it again. Kenny B HERE'S TO THE GORDONS Words by Harold Stewart ; music Robert Wilson and Andy Garden. ©1954. As recorded by Robert Wilson One day as I was walking in bonnie Aberdeen, I saw the Gordons marching in tartans gay and green. Beside me stood a lassie nae higher than my knee, And as the lads gaed swingin' by, that lassie said to me: CHORUS: Here's to the Gordons, the lads so staunch and true. If I'd been a laddie, I'd have been a Gordon too; But seeing that I'm a lassie, I must lead a lassie's life, But there's one thing I'm determined on: I'll be a Gordon's wife. And as the years rolled onwards--it might be eight or ten-- I found myself in yon silver city once again; And there I saw that lassie grown up and full of charm. She murmured as she passed me on a gallant Gordon's arm: CHORUS We all went to the wedding, and since that grand affair, The stork's been twice to see them and each time brought a pair, And in the Duthie park now you'll see them as you go: One, two, three, four bonnie lassies sitting in a row, singing: CHORUS |
