He went electric back in his high school days, fronting various bands such as "Elston Gunn and the Rock Boppers" (he was Elston Gunn) and "The Golden Chords". It was pretty lively stuff. Apparently they did a dynamite performance at his school auditorium in the late 50's which just about took the roof off the place. The administration hated it, the kids loved it. His big inspirations at the time seem to have been Little Richard, Elvis, and Buddy Holly.

Later he went acoustic in a big way, as is well known. That went from I guess about 1959 to 1964.

Still later he went electric again...around about 1965 when he recorded two history-making albums and got in a whole lot of shit with the folk audience at Newport and elsewhere... :-) I guess you were asking about that, right?

His prolific period between 64 - 66 was definitely one of his best! "HIghway 61" is a classic!

Yes, that was the point when he transcended the Woody-Guthrie/Ramblin'-Jack-derivative period and moved fully into his own unique expression and voice both lyrically and musically...and it will probably never be surpassed.
