To-days Irish News [22 Oct] reports that Christy Moore was held for two hours at Holyhead after embarking from a Dublin Ferry and questioned under the Pevention of Terrorism Act.
Moore was questioned about the lyrics in his songs, personal questions on his family and friends in Ireland and England, Moore believed that such treatment of Irish visitors to Britain was a thing of the past.
I suppose the questioning goons needed an interpreter for "Lisdoonvarna", Moore was on his way to play two gigs in Liverpool.

I though it was all over now, disgraceful treatment.

I wonder if Christy ever got pulled when he lived here ?

Everyone has fond memories of Christy when he lived in Halifax.

Once in the 1990s i was going through Stanstead to Dublin, I was taken aside and asked several questions (over again and ad nauseum)- at that time I was travelling to Ireland 4-5 times a year. As a Uk citizen going to the Republic I was interrogated about where I was going, who i was staying with etc, and upon saying I was visiting my irish girlfriend in Dublin (who incidentally lived in the UK but was holidaying in Dublin) was told 'would n't it be much easier if I had a british girlfriend'!!!!

To all intents and purposes I was on 'their' side - so fu*k knows what it was like coming the other way (Ireland to UK)for non UK citizens and being Irish. 'No dogs, no blacks, no irish!!' So as Christy said whatever happens if 'you are a black, irish wolfhound'!

I trust Christy met their stupidity with coolness and disdain. (and please god do not let it put him off visiting with Planxty in January!!)

Elfcall - who despite the advice of customs/british military intelligence happily married his Irish girlfriend!!

Christy Moore isn't the only one be hassled by U.S. customs and immigration. I have a Canadian friend who is employed in the U.S. as a nurse. She has to go get her card stamped every year and always has a copy of NAFTA with her because they always hassle her.

Can you imagine why they would hassle a nurse for no other reason than she is a Canadian? I might add that they have in her file, a copy of everything from her birth certificate to her current home address. They know everything about her and yet they still put her through the mill every year.

What a waste of human resources. Why don't they look for some real suspects. Why waste their time on musicians and nurses?

Excuse me Dianavan, this happened in Britain, Christy Moore speaking on RTE Radio said " Seeing as this happens to Irish visitors to Britain regularly, I intend to give two full statments to the Irish Minister of Foreign Affairs and investigate the situation".

I was stopped for a long stupid couple of hours of the silliest questioning, this happened in the mid 70s on the way to a Dog Show in Birmingham.

Thanks for the correction.

I thought the U.S. was the only country that wasted their human resources in such a manner. I guess the U.S. and Britain are learning from each other. Empiricism at its best! Maybe Britain should become one of the states or maybe the U.S. is not so united as they think. Maybe they really are just another English colony. Time marches backwards.

As much as I admire Christy Moore, he has always been a supporter of IRA terrorism. I think if the UK authorities are going to question anyone, they should question him. They are doing their job and doing it properly.

Yeah, yeah... So you admire supporters of the IRA?

Christy Moore isn't a potential suicide-bomber (which is where you really face your most immediate and gravest security problem), and stopped supporting the IRA after the Enniskillen bomb (1987?).

I almost started a new thread; I didn't think this was "BS"
Here is the article from the Irish News 22 Oct 2004

Ordeal at port saddens Christy - by Marie Louise McCrory:

Folk singer Christy Moore has spoken out after being questioned for two hours under Bristish anti-terrorim legislation while on his way to gigs in Liverpool.

The Co. Kildare native said he was asked about his song lyrics and other personal questions about his children and family and friends in Ireland.

The 59-year-old musician, whose hits include Ride On and Lisdoonvarna, was stopped by police in the Welsh port of Holyhead after he got off a ferry from Dublin on Monday afternoon. He said last night he felt saddened by the ordeal.

The folk singer and his driver had been questioned separately at the port under the Prevention of Terrorism Act.

Mr. Moore, who appeared in this year's West Belfast Festival, said the police probe had been a terrigying experience and claimed that officers refused to give him a reason.

In a statement released through his publicit, Mr Mooore said none of his equipment, bags or his car had been searched by police.

He said it was saddening to think that such treatment of Irish people travelling to Britain was not a thing of the past.

The publicist said the Irish Ambassador in London had been informed of the incident.

A spokeswoman for the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs said it had also received a full statement from the singer.

Mr Moore, a former member of Planxty and Moving Hearts, was due to play two gigs in Liverpool before returning home to Ireland on Sunday.

pretty unforgiveable - given the guy's rough medical condition.

Its always a bit mind blowing when people who are paid to be experts seem to know less about their subject than ordinary people. Presumably these people are paid to know about the terrorist threat from Ireland - which is always going to exist while things remain unresolved between the two countries. Turns out they know less than anybody reading the Irish newspapers and watching the occasional news programme.

Mind you, you get lots of stuff like this happening when you get investigated by the tax people - they seem to know less about bank accounts, and credit cards etc than most people do.

and as for folk music journalists....

If that is true, then I am sorry to hear it. Could you give us more details? What were you doing when this occurred? Were you an armed combatant? What was the location and date? And how was Mr. Moore involved?

Many Irish folks supported the armed struggle. But the struggle is now a political one. The people of Ireland and the North OF Ireland have spoken clearly, and they have held to their word. And for what it is worth, Norman, it isn't only folks on the loyalist side who have been maimed and killed. It isn't the Nationalists who are attacking little schoolgirls in the streets and doing everything they can to destroy the peace process.

Christy Moore has said publicly for a number of years now, that he no longer supports the armed struggle. Fair enough. Time to put that behind for the good of the children. That means the Nationalist community needs to do the same.

Look to the future, not the past. And take time to enjoy a concert by some of the best Irish musicians in the world.

Mick

Pogue

A decent gentle soul like Christy Moore wouldn't thank you for being defended in those terms

Norm

I am sorry. I was having a drink in the Talk of the Town, Birmingham with my wife and my Aunty Eileen the week before it went up
Kellys and Dolans - 2nd and third generation paddies. there but for the grace of God.

To be honest I found the phrase 'I became a supporter of the armed struggle' in Christy's autobiography - very hard to take. He was an adult - he knew what was involved.

the only thing is that he must have seen different things to me that set him off on those beliefs.

Without a doubt though, he is the probably greatest interpreter of folksong in these islands. One of my proudest moments was when he wrote me a personal note saying he had enjoyed on of my albums, it was just so nice of him to bother. I would never use his words in publicity just in case he just being kind.

weelittledrummer, don't be silly. It is only through open dialogue that this stuff gets sorted out. Go back and read the thread called "Back Home In Derry". You will see that it went back and forth, up and down. Folks got angry, folks got serious. In the end, I believe that it was a positive thread. You have too much to contribute to get blown off by one person. Stick around and argue your points well.

Subject: Christy Moore detained entering UK
From: GUEST,Chris B (Born Again Scouser)
Date: 28 Oct 04 - 02:56 PM

Here we go again...

According to this week's 'Irish Post', Christy Moore was detained for two hours at the port of Holyhead in North Wales last week while entering the UK to play a series of dates.

According to the 'Post', he was questioned about the contents of his briefcase and about the lyrics to some of his songs (mind you, I still can't make head or tail of 'The Reel In The Flickering Light').

They also (get this) asked him questions about family members including the names and ages of his children, what sort of home he lived in and what his kids earned(!).

The police didn't give him a reason for stopping him but later said that it was a routine check. However, they didn't check the contents of his instrument cases or the inside of the vehicle he was travelling in.

His driver was also questioned in a separate room and was asked questions about his family as well, including the names of his deceased parents and details of his siblings.

Both men have now made statements (it says here) to the Irish Embassy in London and the Irish Foreign Affairs Department. The Irish Embassy has said that it is now awaiting a response from the British Home Office.

Over to you, chaps...

Get over it people. What about the thousands of Irish who have been interrogated and falsely imprisoned over the last 30 years? Christy sang about the Birmingham six and Guiseppe Conlan. Do not equate the musician with these victims of British injustice. Two hours is a traffic delay in NYC. Maybe this brush with the powers that be will inspire Christy to write about some issues facing Irish people today - ie: US deportations of Irish families on bs charges (John Mc Nichol of Philadelphia come to mind)- tearing families apart, families seperated possibly forever over new immigration laws, and the flow of Irish back to Ireland because of the immigrant backlash in America today. Love songs are nice - but never take your finger off the pulse of what makes our blood boil. I suppose we should get "Free Christy" shirts printed up for this terrible atrocity. Any young man from Derry or Belfast traveling to the US or main land England has been an open target for the past thirty years and will continue to be a target for the forseable future. Don't get me wrong - I still love Christy as a poet, musician, and storyteller - I just think we should all be a bit more thick skinned about what happened. The People's Own MP, The boy from Tamladtduf, 90 miles from Dublin town, and not to mention his remarks on the box set about the old whore from number ten...... What do you expect from the British government? Daithi Mac Aindriu - Fishtown - USA
